  1. I think we saw Seattle use a strategy that many teams do. I can see how people who like to dog Mauer could see it otherwise but watch enough baseball, it's smart strategy to set up a force at every base. It happens a lot even when there are two outs. But whatever. In other news, MLB Network is talking about how crazy it is that there is NO Twins talk at the deadline.
  2. Wait, so there wasn't a guy on 2B with two outs? Walking Hicks didn't set up a force out at every base? And Mauer didn't make them pay? That is exactly what happened? That is a strategy a lot of smart teams do. It's a smart thing to do regardless of the hitter. I see it all the time when I'm not watching the Twins. I understand we don't that often, kind of like how our pitchers, forever, don't throw stuff in the dirt on extreme pitchers count cause goodness forbid we throw a ball.
  3. Harold Reynolds still slamming the Astros even after they swept the Angels
  4. doesn't matter. Still set up a force at all the bases in case of ground ball the 3rd out could be recorded at any base (excluding home for those who like to call that a base). It was good strategy no matter who the batter is, not an indictment of Mauer. And it didn't work, cause Mauer made him pay anyway.
  5. guy on 2B and no one on 1B, walk Hicks to set up force at 3B, 2B and 1B, and Mauer delivered. Good strategy (regardless of the batter), didn't work out
  6. and how did the walking Hicks to get to Mauer strategy work out?
  7. did it set up the force though?
  8. When they walked Hicks to get to Mauer, was it to set up a force at every base so a double play could happen? And Seattle's manager isn't know to be a genius in game move guy
  9. Trevor May brought into a high leverage situation.
  10. So around 18 Hrs left, right?
  11. You mean promoting them right? Not acquiring them. He didn't acquire Sano, Smith did. We got Buxton because of how bad our team was (high draft pick). Rosario drafted under Smith. Polanco signed by Smith...
  12. So he's waiting for offers instead of making offers? Sounds about right.
  13. they contributed, sure. but saying THAT is why they made it all the way to the world series is a stretch. They won less than half of Garza's starts that year and Bartlett had a whopping 1.8 WAR. Harris had a 2.4 WAR the year before. So they got less production from the shortstop position the year they went to the W Series than they did from their starting shortstop the year before. That doesn't scream 31 more regular season wins
  14. I don't think those two players, by themselves, are what propelled them to the W Series, no :-) A lot had to go right. They lost more of Garza's starts than they won and Bartlett had a WAR under 2.0. TBs shortstop the year before had a WAR of 2.4. So less than 2 WAR from Bartlett and only 14 wins in games Garza started when they won 97 overall. Hard to say those two were a huge reason they won 31 more games than the year before.
  15. Because that describes Delmon. Let me make it more simple. You said that one of the main problems with the Delmon trade is that we weren't in the middle of a rebuild. Later you said if the trade happened now, it would get slammed and rightfully so. Yet, we are currently in the middle of a rebuild.
  16. Only if you believe Revere was a quality defender and a good OBP guy.
  17. Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc.
  18. Smith got killed anyway And didn't you just JUST say in an earlier thread post that one of the main problems with the thinking behind trading for Delmon Young was that the team WASN'T in the middle of a rebuild? So, now, when we ARE in the middle of a rebuild, you are saying that trading for a former #1 pick and high prospect coming off a season where he finished 2nd in ROY voting WOULD be rightfully slammed? No issues with the two conflicting statements? As a GM one has to consider age/room for growth from a guy that young. It can't be put aside. Similar to how age can't be put aside when signing a soon to be 40 year old trending way down on defense (defense which was another one of your slams against the Delmon trade).
  19. So the Mets, at home, were one out away from closing out a 7-5 game. Rain and lighting hit hard. Rain delay. They come back to play and the Mets give up two hits and then a 3 run HR. Back to our regularly scheduled futile debate P.S. Ryan is the best
  20. So we can talk about the hole left in CF (and leadoff too) when Ryan traded Span which is just starting to get filled by Hicks and soon Buxton)? Oh, I forget, that's okay because it was a rebuild move. Our horrible defense these last few years, which affects the pitching, is squarely on Ryan with his trades, his acquisitions, and his re-signings.
  21. What hole at SP? The team had SP depth at the time of the trade which is why we say 'trading from a perceived strength'. We supposedly still had that depth going into 2011 (remember the 6 quality SPs, only 5 spots narrative before the 2011 season, or 4 seasons later?) and they had plenty of athletic OFs when the trade happened. What they were missing was a young power type OF (area of weakness) which Delmon was projected to be. And, seriously, if we are going to talk about bringing in brutal defense, can we include bringing Hunter back and getting Willingham, and having to result to putting catchers and IF in the OF, please? And Doumit.
  22. Actually, what fits my point best is what I said the first time which was the truth but you had to scoff at because praised was supposedly too strong of word. Smith and Ryan both traded from supposed strengths for supposed weaknesses. Smith continues to get slammed for it while Ryan was praised for it and , you know, still kind of is. Many just say it didn't work out but it was a good thought process. Smith isn't given that same due for a trade that also didn't work out but was made using the same thought process.
  23. that is exactly the point, but saying apparently saying Ryan was praised for the Span trade was also overstating, so, you know. :-)
  24. well, you know, saying he was 'praised' was also 'overstating', so why not go all in and actually truly overstate by saying 'fleecing' :-)
  25. Plus, Garza was having issues with the team about how he should pitch and Bartlett was good only once since he left.
