  1. There is a lot of value in a mid rotation starter.. May can very well be that kind of guy and probably better. As a starter, he had a FIP of 3.35 this year and a xFIP of 3.95. He averaged almost 8Ks per 9 IP (2nd most of any starter last year and more than any starter when demoted) and walked less than 2 per 9 IP (2nd lowest walk rate of any Twins starter last year). All this while having the misfortune of having a .344 BABIP (and we all get how unstable that can be, Danny Santana) I'll take that kind of performance all season long from a starter. Those are all pretty telling measures if you actually want to measure what the pitcher did (better than ERA and win/loss record) and they say he did his job well.
  2. Most relievers are failed starters (like Nathan). TB had already figured out that Davis belonged in the pen before they ever traded him ((like the Giants did with Nathan). KC, for reasons passing understanding, decided to try him as a starter again, but he had already been converted to a reliever before they ever got him. I hope the Twins aren't dumb enough to continue to waste May in the pen. I have no doubt he will stay in the pen, but I hope he doesn't.
  3. To be fair I didn't say it did tell the story, just that for the amount of innings he caught ,baserunners ran a lot. I think I've made it clear over and over I don't like counting stats to judge anything, just found this one interesting, not necessarily telling. I see a catcher caught 1078 innings and only had 54 attempts against him. That's 170 or so extra innings caught than AJ with over 30 or so less attempts. Not sure the WHIP issues covers that kind of difference. SBs allowed by AJ and the ATL pitchers was 6th and he didn't even play enough to be a qualifying catcher (though only eight catcher did qualify) In any event, you make a good point. How about this, ' When watching a lot of AJ play, he seems to currently have a noodle arm for a catcher.' Then again, a statement like that is just a matter of opinion.
  4. Stats are good if one knows how to use them. For example, if a person (or persons) quotes a stat and then just blatantly disregards what the stat tells them per the explanation given about the stat, that's not using them correctly. In fact, that is choosing not to use them correctly, which is even worse than not knowing how to use them. :-) Also, while CS% isn't a great way to tell a catcher's arm strength, it is interesting to note that would-be-basestealers ran on AJ a lot. 88 times in only 909 innings behind the plate. That's a lot and there's probably some scouting out there that told them it was a very good bet they could take a base.
  5. Yes, 24% for his career and 24% this year too, as opposed to 31%. Also, base runners don't only steal on the catcher, the pitchers have a lot to do with it too. We can't judge a catcher's arm solely on stolen base %. Well, I suppose one CAN do it.
  6. No he hasn't and no he didn't. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pierza.01.shtml
  7. Pete Rose has been ridiculous every time he's been on. He's like a cartoon character at this point.
  8. I guess I have a few questions on this: 1. If the Twins and St. Peter didn't want the info out there, why did St Peter say it in the first place? 2. Was this told to a bunch of employees only and it got leaked or was the info told to some fans too? 3. If told to fans, why is it okay for those fans in attendance to know this and not anyone else? 4. Was there an understanding agreed upon between St Peter and the people listening to him that everything said was said in confidence (non-disclosure agreement or something)? I ask because someone actually suggested that by deleting the thread, it saved the originator of the thread from getting in trouble. Not sure how he would get in trouble because someone blabbed something he shouldn't have. 5. See question #1 again.
  9. After seeing him try to take out Morneau not once but twice in one game (by running slightly inside the baseline and trying to hit Morneau's ankle with his cleats) he will forever be a scumbag in my eyes and I would never root for him no matter what jersey he wears. Anyone who purposely tries to injure another player loses all respect.
  10. Yeah, I don't think he was better this year than his CY Young year Just a quick look at the numbers, in his CY Young year he had more innings, a better FIP, a better xFIP, more Ks per 9 IP, less HR/9 IP. He managed to do that in the AL and with a BABIP of .303. while this year he had a .229 BABIP. But yeah, his ERA was better this year....
  11. Just a quick look at the numbers, in his CY Young year he had more innings, a better FIP, a better xFIP, more Ks per 9 IP, less HR/9 IP. 12. Greinke's WAR this year was 5.9, his Cy Young winning season it was 8.6. Probably his career year. He's averaged 4.5 WAR over the last 3 years. He's been pretty impressive for awhile, not just this year. We won't get him, but I'm not sure he's doomed to drop off right away. So many people see a guy 31, 32 and say avoid them. That's a huge chunk of FAs. Anyway, this is a fun read, but there's no way Ryan gets Greinke, nor does he even make much of an effort, if any.
  13. we have to wait and see if Meyer will ever stick on the 25 man roster to determine that :-)
  14. Maybe, but he'd probably figure out a way to get it in his contract that he also gets to face our pitching staff :-)
  15. Yeah, Fangraphs has had quite a few guys get hired by MLB teams after writing for them, according to Dave Cameron. I'm guessing because it's a well regarded site amongst the front offices in the game.
  16. Now, Jose Bautista knows how to perform a bat flip! Hits the HR, stands at home plate and stares cause he knows what he just did, then an epic bat flip! So far, only Plesac at MLB Network said it was over the top (at least from what I heard) but then in perfect Plesac common sense, he said it wouldn't have been disrespectful if it was a game winner in the 9th inning. 7th inning, not so much. Love that logic. That logic is right up there with saying it would be okay if a veteran did it because he's earned it. Eric Byrnes disagreed. He said after playing in the DR for five winters, and seeing that kind of stuff on a nightly basis, he learned to open his eyes a little bit and be more tolerant of emotion. That it's just due to the fact that they like to show emotion. Imagine that, a guy who played for quite some time in the game who understands the cultural differences and show tolerance. Isn't just a guy who says American way or the highway. Took him some time in the DR to get it, according to him, but he finally did. Good for him. And it was like 100 times more exuberant (and awesome, IMO) than the one we all debated here a couple weeks or so ago (whenever it was) when a young batter did it against us.
  17. Blue Jays were barely over .500 and 6 games back in the AL East at the time of the deadline. They won the division by 6 games by having, I believe, the best record after the deadline. Royals already had an 8 game lead in the division at the deadline. Yeah, they got some good players and it helped them expand their lead a few games but the division was theirs already. The Royals biggest boost was playing the Twins at the end of the season and beating that behind to ensure home field advantage. Other than that, yeah I doubt the majority of fans are worried about how the guys they gave up at the deadline might turn out.
  18. I am happy for the Blue Jays. They went for it at the deadline big time and it paid off big time. Their fans today were equally awesome (for as loud and enthusiastic as they were/are) and embarrassing (throwing stuff) tonight. Hoping they can toss out the embarrassing aspect in the next round. They playoffs have been very good this year.
  19. I just threw up a little in my mouth. That could be the most disgusting thing I've ever read on a Twins site.
  20. Wait, the Blue Jays brought in their closer when they needed FIVE outs for the save? Teams aren't allowed to do that, are they? :-)
  21. Mike, yeah, he got a good amount of grief here by some people. I remember one time I mentioned something Kiley said and I was sarcastically asked who he was by someone who clearly disagreed with his point of view? I pointed out he had worked for multiple MLB clubs before. Response was something like, 'Well, with that kind of analysis no wonder he doesn't work for a MLB team anymore.' Well, not surprisingly, he's been hired again by a MLB team, and now it's to be the Assistant Director of Baseball Operations for the Braves. I suppose if he was really good, he would have been hired by a better team :-)
  22. I don't consider Gray an ace, but he's likely to get big money in arbitration anyway when he gets there. His hip also concerns me. As far as him leaving Oakland, his numbers are better away from Oakland so far. So while it may be a concern in the future, so far it has been a non-factor. Having said all that, I wouldn't do the trade. I have high expectations for Berrios and Kepler.
  23. My Grandma and my Dad were from Chicago and my Grandma was a huge Cubs fan. Her and I spent a lot of time watching them. I've always had a soft spot for the Cubbies. I hope they win it all.
  24. They got through the one game wild card game against the team with the 2nd best record in baseball. Now they have taken the best of five series against the team with the best record in baseball. Very good overall team primed to win. GO CUBBIES!!!
  25. Here is something funny. The qualifying 1Bs played around 23,000 innings on defense. There was roughly 43,000 innings played at 1B in the majors this year. Probably a good idea Fangraphs doesn't discard almost half the defensive data for 1Bs :-)
