  1. Lachlan Wells, (for those of you who don't know) was one of the Twins annual high bonus Australians from the 2014 signing period. I believe his bonus was in the 300,000 range. http://www.theherald.com.au/story/2479984/lachlan-wells-signs-with-minnesota-twins-video/
  2. What is it about Meyer not getting past 5 innings? It feels like that happened a lot last year with too many pitches.
  3. I'd say a little of both, but in reality I have no idea how to judge the difference in talent between 15 year olds about to turn 16. So how much better is a 4million player than a 250 grade player at this stage? I'd go back and forth 1 year a Sano like player, the next a bunch of guys, one of whom might be an Arica. Playing the market not the strategy.
  4. It's a trade off. Is this the year they think it's worth it? I can't say. Maybe it's a weak year, maybe they don't have the personal connections mentioned above. Maybe they just really like Wander Javier and a bunch of 5 grand guys. Maybe scouting around this year, they know there are players they like and are get able next year. Or maybe they feel a guy like Escobar is worth essentially an extra 1st round international player, and next year is not worth given up on.... I don't know for sure, and I bet the Twins aren't 100% sure either right now.
  5. I think we're all in agreement on spending the whole budget, the problem is the Twins don't broadcast their bonuses and some players are very closed lipped about what they got, like Ruar Verkerk or one of the last Auzzie pitchers the Twins signed (can't say I wouldn't do the same thing ). So we may never know if every penny is spent unless Doggie Wolfson or someone get's a source off the record. The Twins could use two different strategies during the next signing period. Blow past the cap or expand their cap thru trades. Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Padres, Dbacks could all be cap trade partners if they don't want to/ can't go hog wild over the next July 2nd signing class. Don't the Pads need a Shortstop?
  6. Hmmm, beside the crazy log jam at starting pitching at every level (especially when guys start coming off the DL) There seem to be a potential hole at 3B in the lower minors. If Sano blows out of AA and Goodrun is playing well enough to take his place, who plays the Hot Corner after that in Fort Myers? Does Ryan Walker move their after his DL stint is done? TJ White has played so few professional games I can't see him getting promoted. Wait until the draft and sign an advance college guy? Minor league free agent? Also if Dereck Rodriguez can't make it out of Rookie league this year, they have to consider releasing him.
  7. This does bring up a interesting question in general.... The Twins wouldn't send a a player from the States, a Puerto Rican, a Canadian, German, Dutch, South African, or an Auzzie to the DSL. But they almost automatically send Colombians, Dominicans, Venezuelan, and Panamanians. So why is it automatically assumed A player from the Curaçao would go to the DSL like a Venezuelan instead to the GCL like someone from the Netherlands? Ruar Verkerk is also Dutch but we don't consider him skipping the DSL. Just thinking out loud.
  8. Kepler is the case that's usually mentioned. With more and more online schools popping up I wonder if that's going to be the preferred route, just read last night that Lindsey Vonn, because she trained in Colorado all winter, went to the University of Missouri High School to finish school while working on being a seasonal sport star.
  9. We tend not just to root for the team and the organisation but for the players as well. Even though the most these players could realistically hope for was a cup of coffee. Sad to see the players go, excited for the next batch to take their place and for a couple to beat the odds.
  10. It's okay to be upset. If he feels he's healthy and may only get one more shot at a contract the difference between a mediocre starter and a mediocre reliever is about what? 4 million on a one year deal. I could think a a lot things I could do with a extra 4 million. Sure he could turn in a dominate reliever and have a long career after that. I hope that's the case, but this is the right move for the Twins.
  11. Great article. One of the name I was curious about. Thanks.
  12. If Steve's in I'm in, he's one of the fews guys who's not afraid to make a trade.
  13. Aaron Gleeman posted his system overview today. http://aarongleeman.com/2015/03/11/top-40-twins-prospects-of-2015-system-overview/ I liked this overview a lot more. It gives a very nice balance of optimism, while talking about setbacks top prospects made. It's clear Aaron likes the Twins focus on high velocity arms, even if they're ceiling lower. He also talks about the last two years promotions, filling out important roles.
  14. So maybe Kyle should have been comparing the comp pick the Twins would have gotten in 2002 for not signing Prior, Bryan Bullington or B.J. Upton. Though then Kyle REALLY would have wished he'd have written this story earlier. The Twins didn't have the best track recorded at signing 1st round draft picks, so yeah it shouldn't be a given that he signed. Also, would the Twins have promoted Prior as fast as the Cubs did? They did have a lot of guys filling up those roster spots that we're either low cost and pitching good or slightly unmovable. I don't think Prior in the rotation in 2002 would be a given and worry due to Santana issues breaking the rotation, Santana might have been the one left out of the rotation when Prior gets a spot and Jonah might have missed his best years, hanging out in the bullpen.
  15. Aiken would be 3rd for me as well. Which say how good Buxton and Sano are, because I'd say for at least 1/3 of the teams, he'd become the top prospect in their system.
  16. I read it as, if Pelrey doesn't win the 5th starter role, he's traded or released.
  17. Yeah, those rules went away a few years back. The story goes Rene Gayo of the Pirates tried to game the system telling teams they were going to sign him to drive down the competition, then there were also those rumors about his age that also seemed designed to drive down the price. Rob Plummer maintains no agreement was ever agreed upon (The Pelotero movie seems to back that up).
  18. Kiley McDaniel had a very impressive record last year at not only predicting bonuses, but the teams. The new unwritten rule seems to be: 1, Come to terms with a team early, even a year in advance. 2, Keep quite about it because this breaks the official rules. 3, Trainer pulls kid from all competitions so kids doesn't hurt himself and hurt the deal. Clear sign deal has been reached with someone. 4, Word get out about years and price when other teams talk to the trainer or when scouts for teams talk to each other 'off the record'. 5, if a trainer breaks the verbal agreement, he not only breaks the trust of the team he worked with, but he risks making other early agreements with all teams in the future and missing out on a lot of early money in the future. Then again all it takes is one team to break these rules successfully and the rules can change again. In other words, I fully expect Wander Javier to sign with the Twins on July 2nd.
  19. Only a handful of Latin America July 2nd guys made it to the states in their 1st year (Polanco, Sano, and Minier for example) so the odds are Javier won't be one of those guys, but if the Twins consider him as elite as the other 3 name I mentioned he's got a better shot then most. The Twins have a back log of corner Infielder in rookie ball, but there may be room for a SS on the GCL roster, depending who they draft this summer.
  20. Since you bring up comparing lists, it fun to note that, Like Aaron, Sickels' also ranks Roserio at #10. Here is what he wrote: 10) Eddie Rosario, OF-2B, Grade B-: Tools are not as robust as Polanco’s, but up until 2014 he’s always hit very, very well. Impressive instincts and on-field effort help all of his tools play up, but a drug suspension hurt his stock with observers and adjustments to Double-A pitching have not been smooth. I still like him but some caution is warranted. ETA: late 2015. Gleeman's ranking of Rosario are pretty on par with several of the names you list, the issue isn't lack of work, knowledge, or contacts. I'll give credit for all those things. The issue is: does an overly critical tone get in the way of properly articulating why a prospect is a prospect? Sickels' seems to find a balance in his write up of Rosario that Aaron does not. Which is a shame because Gleeman is a independent thinker and may think do to the lack of power, move to the corner, and the suspension, that Rosario isn't much of a prospect. But when he ranks Rosario almost the same as Jeremy, Cody, and yourself the question becomes is the ranking more 'group think' or does Aaron think more of Rosario then he writes about? After all these are not the days when Blackburn is the Twins top prospect. Every top 10 player for the Twins should now profile as a future regular.
  21. Ugh, It's so hard to read his rankings. I get he's trying to create a whole picture/ both sides argument but it comes off as extremely pessimistic and doesn't give a clear idea why HE likes them. For example: Rosario's write up was all negative: won't be a long term center fielder, gave up on second base, drug suspension, didn't far as well in AA 2nd time. And then his positive? Can't be drug tested for reefer now that he's on the 40 man. That's it. Why do you have him in the top 10 then?! What does he think Rosario has to offer over player 40-11? This is a top 3 minor league system, he makes it sound like 40-30 could make it to the majors, but then get bogged down on the cons or potential cons to the players. Hopefully he won't have anything to say negative about Meyer, Sano, Buxton... Maybe I should skip the top five....
  22. In Mike Berardino Article about the pool amount he lists "shortstop Wander Javier, third baseman Christopher Martinez and outfielder Juan Soto" as potential Twins targets. From the post it isn't clear to me if he feels these players are the top talent or the Twins are connected to them. Anyone have any insight? http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2015/02/27/twinsights-twins-nearly-4-million-international-bonus-pool/
  23. What happened four years ago? Because Hunter has been gone six. The Twins won 2 years after Hunter, so it must be fun covering a winning team. It's also nice coving a guy like Hunter. He provides good quotes and easy to write about antidotes , Mauer does not, and Mauer has been Souhan favorite target for years. I get 10 times the info and insight from you Halsey then I do from Souhan.
  24. Pay their minor league players at least minimal wage, go in with other teams to build better academies in DR, Ven, Cuba, agree to put 50 million towards brain injury research, more towards urban and rural baseball programs in their cities/states, and a scholarship funds for women, maybe it can go to women softball players who don't get a true professional outlet after college. At least one of these. Wait.... No change my mind. Free soft serve days and one physically gifted baseball playing teen.
  25. Too bad about his health. I want a few guys to dominate to push a certain former #1 draft pick down to the Twins.
