  1. There are also rumors that the Rangers got draft money from the Marlins, but how much or for who, I don't know yet.
  2. Yeah I'm guessing the logic for the Twins was something like, we like Gasparini, but not as much as we liked Kepler, so why should we spend 1/2 million more on him when there is equal talent who's played against better competition getting less right now. I'm wonder if the fact that Gasparini got 1.3 million and Zapata getting 1.6 for the White Sox had anything to do with the fact they're both great English speakers? Could that drive up their value by hundreds of thousands?
  3. Matt Garrioch post his top prospects for tomorrow as well. A lot of the same names as the MLB list and BA list, but again, different order. This should help illustrate it's not always easy projecting kids who won't hit their prime for another decade. Here are some of the names we've most recently heard connected to the Twins to one degree or another: Lewin Diaz (who Matt thinks is definitely a 1B) is at 10. Mayky Perez RHP is at 18. Jen-Ho Tseng RHP is at 19 Marten Gasparini SS comes in at 23. 2013 International Signings Preview - Minor League Ball
  4. Exactly. There is no Sano in this class and I doubt any two teams can even agree on a top five. The Nationals think it's a down year, the Twins think it's a deeper year. The Twins do need to fill their Dominican team as well, but they have more money to do it with this year than others. The Cubs seem to be going all out, rumored to be giving guys way more than their worth to jump start their organization. Their targeting both of BA top 2 players. It sounds like they may even go over their cap. The Astros have by far the most money to spend and now it sounds like they won't get anyone one in BA top 10. So you have the two extremes at the top of the draft pool right there. As long as the Twins use their pool and don't let it go to waste it will be fine by me.
  5. That's a good guess on dollars For Diaz and Tseng, given that's what the Twins paid combined for Minier and Thorpe last year. If the Twins get two top 30 prospects on top of the other regular amount of low bonus player they normally get, that would be a good year. 3 player would be fantastic, second only to the Twins 2009 signing year. I'm starting to notice the rookie league teams are getting pitching heavy after the last two drafts were so pitcher focused and other top hitters got promoted quickly. I'd like the Twins to grab a few more upside bats to balance out the minor leagues a little more next year.
  6. Levelle gives an update. He Talks more about the Twins being in on Diaz and mentions a new name, pitcher Mayky Perez. Listed 19th by Baseballe America, but 9th overall (2nd pitcher) by mlb.com (just ahead of Diaz). MLB says he's 16 years old, 6'3" mid 90's fastball, change up, slider. Lacks control right now. Twins do like the SS from Italy, but maybe not as much as other teams do (Rumors are the Royals want to make him a very rich kid). Levelle also reminds us that this isn't a draft, some of these signing may not happen on the 2nd and could take weeks of negotiation and bidding. Twins target Dominican teen Diaz | StarTribune.com
  7. Baseball America's Top 30 list came out this morning. A lot of the same names but in a very different order. July 2 Top 30 International Prospects List - BaseballAmerica.com
  8. Right , worst case scenario he gets pick up as a switching hitting power hitting pitch hitter, then an injury happens to that teams 1B or DH he gets some regular playing time and turns into David Ortiz. ... I mean that's the WORST case scenario. ... I mean what are the odds that happens to the same team Twice. You know. ... So Max Kepler, do you guys think he can be MLB starting ready in three years? It would suck burning thru his option years only to not have him ready and sitting on the bench wasting the ability to develop him further.
  9. This was discussed earlier this year. Though Kepler, Polanco, and Sano all signed the same year, there was a hold up for some reason before Sano signed his contract (tax reasons maybe?) and Sano signed after Short Season ball had ended, this meant that season didn't count against his Rule 5 clock. So Sano won't have to be added until winter of 2014.
  10. Wolfson also confirms interest in Lewin Diaz and a pitcher named Vargas. Ben Badler reminded people on his twitter account that 3 people got over a million dollar bonus that weren't on Baseball America's list last year. Less people are connected to International Players so it can lead to a lot surprises.
  11. True. Though it isn't exactly like an auction house. Relationships are built up between Trainers, players, and team scouts/ representatives. A trainer puts out a number and deals are made. The Twins could out bid the White Soxs this year for a guy like Zapata, but because there is so much talent that can be found for less it might be a wiser strategy to spread the money out. Still, grabbing 2 elite guys could be possible this year.
  12. MLB.com top 30 International prospects list has come out with summaries, comps, and videos! 2013 Prospect Watch | MLB.com: News A few name that have been connected to the Twins: *Micker Zapata is Ranked 2, but over the past month lots of other teams have been linked to the CF. *Lewin Diaz is Ranked 10, more David Ortiz and Ryan Howard comps. *JenHo Tseng is Ranked 29 and is one of the only players from Asia on the list. *Marten Gasparini is Ranked 30, though never directly connected to the Twins, given their presence in Europe in the past, he's got to be on their radar.
  13. Well their contingency plan is hiring a sniper to take out the others team starter, but from what I'v seen from Hernandez, he's not good a hitting his spots so it's not him behind the barrel. No contingency plan is not having any starters on your 40 man you can call up and having to use an over worked long reliever. Henderks and Hernandez are spots starters at this point in their careers Gibson is a long term solution. I wish they had 4 long term solutions in the AAA rotation right now too.
  14. The Miracles are wearing red uniforms now? That's going to get confusing when I see pictures of them and the Rock cats. Great video, Dougie Baseball does have a good baseball mind, definitely a coaching prospect.
  15. Meh, "openly questioning" is a bit of a leap. I think it's more accurate to say excitement or advocates for promotions. I suspect very few people from the groups you mentioned openly questions the front office judgement about these two players because when a group has successfully done it in the past people in general give them the benefit of the dought they can do it again. Unless either of these players are showing signs of regression from lack of being challenged, how their being handled is not a big issue at this point.
  16. Rain Delay.
  17. it was a half joke. It was a reference to Scott Hatteberg. But if the shoulder problems are Chronic and don't affect his swing his long term position may be 1st base. But we're not there yet. The injury healing itself right as EST ended says we're only getting part of the story with Mr. Kepler. I don't feel like speculating on what the story is, im just excited he finally playing A ball! As Jeremy says its Moot now that we know he played CF in EST.
  18. Don't need to throw if you play 1st base.
  19. Might be waiting for Michael Gonzales to come off the DL, they don't want to leave the Miracles without enough players to field a team. Also Vargas only had a 1/2 a season in Low A last year, Twins would be moving him quickly if he only got a 1/2 a season in High A too.
  20. Twins didn't draft many LHP, in area of weakness in the system. It would be a blow to the draft if they can't sign him.
  21. I'm Guessing D.Ortiz, D. Santana, and J. Pinto are staying in New Britain as well. That's going to make one powerful Latino Lineup.
  22. Thanks for sharing the link. The Twins and Kohl's reps would have negotiated a price ahead of time, so they could know how much money they could work with later draft picks. The Twins would have left the door open though if one of the big three fell. So Stewart is being very honest when he says it wasn't a real option until he heard his name. The choice sounds easy for him after that. Only thing that would hold it off is if he failed his physical, but he sounds too confident for there to be any surprises there.
  23. Shoot, Christmas is almost over and I just opened all my present... now I'm a little depressed. Ho hum. ... Now to get ready for Hanukkah on July 2nd! International signing deadline!
  24. SS Nelson Molina goes 11th.
  25. At 1.5m the only way to make that work is to forfeit next year 1st round pick or to have picked McGuire over Stewart.
