  1. I'd be on board with Kolek and Wilson as our first two picks.
  2. I forget who did the interview, if it was you Jeremy, Seth, or Jesse Lund over at Twinkie Town, but the Twins area scout for East Asia (China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea) was saying once agents and handlers notices your team is starting to spend money in the region they start bring the talented guys to your team's scout attention, doing the hard work of scouting for them. The Benefits for The Yankees this year is ever high end players handler will be checking in with the Yankees before doing written agreements. So a guy like Lara might drive his price up with the Brewers after talking to the Yankees or just go back on the verbal 'agreement' like you mentioned. Also next year every player will contact the Cubs and Rangers with their prized players and they'll contact the Yankees again in 2016 if a draft isn't in place.
  3. It's a pendulum swing. Spending on international amateurs started to increase higher than many owners wanted, so they tried (and failed) to get a draft put in place, but the soft cap they did get had disincentives that were weak, so spending starts swinging harder the other way, so then stricter rules or a draft will be demanded, and a system that really wasn't broken, suddenly needs to get fixed. I can understand why some teams would want to take advantage of that and why others wouldn't want to be complaisant in dissolving status quo.
  4. Ben Badler has it at 3,490,000 http://www.baseballamerica.com/international/2013-international-spending-by-team/ So about 400,000 still in the coffers. The Blue Jays and the Orioles have both spend that much on Dominican pitchers in the last 10 days, so the window isn't completely closed, nor is the well dry.
  5. I try to stay positive, and it's hard to fault the Twins for doing what 25 other teams are doing by not turning this into a higher and earlier bidding war; But when would it stop on its own? Are teams going to begin coming to agreements with children out of the Little League World series? This is unsustainable. Could you imagine if the Yankees and the Red Sox came to agreements with 8 of the top 15 prospects 6 months before the Rule 4 draft? I look forward to amateur signings, but I suspect the Twins won't be signing any big names out of the Dominican Republic or Venezuela this year.
  6. I'm sure Doogie Wolfson will keep digging up the Twins' Interest in Cuban players like he did today. And Jeremy will write up a primer in April or May again, but Kiley McDaniel has been reporting that the International trading rules are about to be taken advantage of again, this time on a whole new spending level. For a few months now he has been writing about how the Yankees plan to blow by their international "cap" limits this year. Just like the Cubs and Rangers did last year, and the Rays the year before that. He also goes into the Game Theory: The Tragedy of the Commons to explain why this is happening now. This coupled with the rumors the Brewers have an agreement with Twins target Gilbert Lara, might make this a horrible season to have the 5th biggest spending pool. I get the Twins 'could' do this if they wanted too as well, and they may still have money to spend from the 2013 period, but I don't see that happening. They have a price in their head about what a player's value is actually worth and don't make an offer over that, The Cuban Free agent market over the past three years is proof that they'll get out bid on most of these players. The bottom line is the Twins will keep playing within the rules, they will not be able to sign any high end 16 year old free agent stars for the next couple years, which will weaken the system down the road. For the first time, I'm firmly in the camp of a International draft.
  7. The Cubs did get him thru every NL team.
  8. I love Bryant, I would have taken him ahead of Stewart no problem, but the author must think he sticks at 3rd, hit close to as many homers as Sano, and hits 25-50 more points than him for the higher ranking, which I doubt any of those 3 things happen. He must have saw Bryant in the Arizona Fall League moved him up the list.
  9. I'm throwing out the name Dillon Cease. High school pitcher from Georgia plus plus fastball, 6-2 could go in the Supplementary round, but I think he falls to the 2nd round, his secondary stuff isn't there yet and most teams will go with a more polished pitcher with their 1st round stuff. If the Twins can teach him a good breaking ball the kid could be an ace... or a 7th inning guy if he can't. Also watch Justin Sheffield a LHP out of Tennessee 92-95 MPH fastball strong secondary stuff, repeatable mechanics. Definitely a starter. Like cmb0252 mentioned this draft is deep in high school pitching, and I like go with the grain of a drafts strength.
  10. Yeah, if the Marlins were to grab a top 8 pick instead of the clear 2nd pick to save Money for later in the draft, the Twins would benefit greatly. For the purposes of this scenario lets say it's still Jeff Hoffman, he could easily fall to the Twins if the Chicago teams get obsessed with different players. Or even if the pitching starved Cubs or Soxs take him, that leaves more top end talent for the Twins to choose from. Drafts are more fun when there are lots of good choices to debate instead of just one clear obvious choice for your teams pick. My prediction for the player with the most movement on draft boards this year is Gatewood. That kid could go 2nd to 30th based on scouting reports.
  11. Here's another pre 2014 amateur season mock draft: Hound Sports After a while you start seeing "group think" in some of these mocks, at least until people start seeing more games and contacting sources again. A majority of these mocks have a top five made up of Rodon, Hoffman, Kolek, Turner, and Alex Jackson. Matt Garriock came out with a top 300 prospect list as well (Not A Mock, a draft prospect list) From some of his comments and prospect break down over at Minor League Ball, I get the feeling he thinks Tyler Beede is going to break into the top five.
  12. The bummer is that there is very little new info in media like this. Buxton is the best, Sano is fantastic, but they don't go deeper into either player or the system. They didn't even have time to mention Meyer. As much as people criticized Law for putting Engelb Vielma in his to 20, at least he threw out a different name that facilitated discussion. Also, If the White sox hadn't signed Jose Abreu who would they have talked about in their system?
  13. I think the most important takeaway of what Law said/ranked and what Radcliff said isn't Radcliff talent appraising ability, but that fact it's clean that people with SAY in the organization think Vielma is someone to watch, which means they're watching him. He's not just organization filler, he a prospect who down the road may fill a need on the big league club, even if it's an Escobar like capacity. It kinda like Stuart Turner getting a camp invite, sure Turner has document ability and success in college, but when your employer has tag you as a fast mover, as long as you meet their expectations, your going to move fast. From a fans perspective Vielma is someone to watch and if he does well he's someone people can safely emotionally invest in.
  14. Sounds like the White Sox (picking 3rd) are not straying too far from the BA, MLB draft boards Link They're looking at Rondon, Hoffman, Turner, Kolek, Beede, and Gatewood. I'm sure that list will change and morph, just like the Twins list will, but the Cubs and the Sox are the two teams to watch entering into this years draft. Assuming Rondon and Hoffman stay at the top, it leaves things open for the Sox at 3. I'm optimistic that there is going to be a game changer there at 5 for the Twins. This year still looks deep and though I'm low on Beede right now, I'd be happy with any of the other five players on that list as well as Jackson.
  15. One of the things BA has always been high on is age and ceiling. Pinto is a little older and Mlb regular ceiling is not as flashly as potential Allstar. Santana has always been young for his league and the power potential, avg, and range says his ceiling might be higher, though Pinto is a lot more likely to reach his.
  16. Forward by John Bonnes!?! How'd you get that guy!? Ill buy the book after my holiday bills are paid next month. I do in enjoy Jeremy interview with scouts and how you guys break up the work load. One thing you could add is a break down of what each team level represents. Avg age of the league, who go where (example most high schoolers drafted go to the gulf coast league) and a side by side comparison of how the Twins set up there system with at least two other Organizations. How does the Twins not having a SS A ball team affect promotions, or is the Twins set up of 6 American minor league teams typical or unusual.
  17. At number five the Twins should be targeting someone that is a franchise player. Someone that immediately because #1 or #2 at his position in the minor league system. I think the HOF, college vs High school numbers gets that discussion off track. Who, from this class, today, do you see fulfilling that role? The Twins have broken from their "Twins Player" drafting enough over the last few drafts that the 1st pick is truly wide open. Rodon, Hoffman, Turner, Kolek, Jackson (if he stays at C 1, outfield 2-3), Gatewood (If he stays at SS), and Maybe Toussiant; fit that role in my option. Who do you guys see as a franchise player? (pretend like we don't already have 3-4 in our system already )
  18. Won't May be out of options by Opening Day 2015? So maybe bullpen arm for start of 2015, followed by being stretched out as a starter for mid 2015, might be a more likely timeline.
  19. Well, here's hoping that enough elite guys have boom seasons in 2014 so the Twins can scoop up someone who could end up being the best talent at 5. As for Turner, he has the most potential for a lead balloon drop down the charts than anyone. If his home run production drops, or an injury affects his speed or defense for a second year in a row, he'll be more of a top 15-20 pick. If he has a on year, than yeah he's a top five talent who looks good in our near future line up. But if Santana shows he's a great prospect this year or Polanco shows he can handle Short, will people still be pulling for him?
  20. Are you refer to Appel or Buxton? As I recall there wasn't a consensus.
  21. I think by the end of spring training we will have lost 1 or 2 of Diamond, Worley, and Deduno, to waivers or trades so adding Gilmartin will be important to restocking our AA and AAA pitching depth, as well as our depth for starter prospects.
  22. I'm a fan of what The Royals did in the first round. By making predraft deals they were able to get Sean Manaea and Hunter Dozier. There was no way Dozier was going to be there at pick 34, and Manaea got paid like he wanted to even though he was injured. I don't know how the rest of their draft looks compared to the Pirates or the Twins, but it was a bold move.
  23. When following prospects there are lessons to be learned that shape your future projections. Like Age to level of competition. I used be very high on players like Kevin West or Rene Leveret who were much older than their competition , and lower on player like Plouffe and Span who were young for AAA. There are a few lessons I've learned with Hughes. Like a player needs a position and it helps if their offensive skill set matches that position. Also Strike out to Walks matter a lot if a player doesn't show strong and steady power numbers. The most important lesson with Hughes is this: it's not the end of the world if you lose a player to wavers, it means most likely they've been a fringe major leaguer for longer than you've wanted to admit. As for Thorpe the consistent high list ranking for a player who has only pitched is the Gulf Coast league is for two very good reasons, Aussie take longer to develop, so when one blasts high numbers out of the gate, it makes people take notice. Also, if Thorpe's skills would make him a 1st rounder in the US draft for NEXT year and he pro debut was that good, he'd be getting the same treatment as Stewart is this year.
  24. Well this year it's a deep class, so the twins are in line for a normal 1st round talent with there second pick, which equals a top 10 prospect even in a deep system like the Twins farm system. So, is Drew worth a trade of a top 10 Twins prospect plus a over market contact? I don't think He is, though other Free agents are for sure.
  25. I like MLB's Draft coverage because it's free, it has videos, and helps people put names to faces. Sadly they don't update the information regularly. I'm warming up to Alex Jackson but still like Kolek best at five. The problem with focusing on Pitching is the 4 teams ahead of the Twins need pitching badly. If the top bat is there at five, take it.
