Some thought Goodrum would move to the outfield if he outgrew short. Plouffe I can't recall anyone saying he wouldn't stick, and to his credit he played 3 years of AAA short, just too many miscues and throwing errors (kinda like the reports we get about Santana right now).
-
Going with outside reports: Sano: Every scout said he would move off to 3rd or Right field. Dozier: Most said he would stick, a few thought he'd move to 2nd or 3rd. Polanco: When signed everyone said he'd stick, grew a lot, last year people had doubts. Michaels: it was 50/50. He had only play short for a year, going back to 3rd or 2nd seemed possible. Cuddyer: I Don't remember off the top of my head, really only start following prospects when he was already a outfielder in AAA. The point is, it really good sign when every independent scout thinks he sticks, not just some.

Article: The Emergence of Kennys Vargas
maxisagod replied to Twins Fan From Afar's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hmm, Let say Below Average. Below Average glove and range. Meaning If Mauer is hurt, he could player there. But just like people dream of him having David Otriz production with the bat, they have nightmares about him being like Ortiz in the field. -
Don't know what to make of it, all it takes is one surprise to change the look of the first round, I just feel this is two surprise picks at 2 and 4, and that's less likely.

But Young was moved too quickly, he relied on his natural talents, but didn't develop better skills, like approach, keeping in shape during the season, or learning about this thing called taking a walk. Stewart might even be able to blow away high A batter if he uses just two pitches, but the Twins are trying to develop an ace, and having a 4-5 MLB ready pitches to do it, now is the time for Stewart to learn how to pitch and not just throw. I'm fine keeping him in low A all year if he keeps progressing towards that goal.

3rd or 4th person to mention Gordon heavy to Twins, a lot of smoke there...

The risk for Appel was less than other players. He comes from a more affluent family, Would collected a college degree from a good school, and had his arm insured by Lloyds of London, so if it did fall off his Senior year, he'd still be a millionaire. So that would leave the high stakes Black Jack scenario your talking about, where you have a million in your pocket (25th pick) 3 million on the table (8th pick in 2012) and 6-8 million if you win (1st overall). Worst case, Your a millionaire, best case your a even richer millionaire. The REAL risk is going to a college program with a history of pitchers getting overwork/ overused and Alumni who never live up to their promise due to injury. Now that your in that program another year, did you just give up a future 100 million contract at 32, because your career was derailed by injures? hmmmm.

If the draft were held today, Also assuming Hoffman is healthy, There seems to be a top tier of 4 pitchers, Followed by Jackson in a tier just below, followed by tier of guys like Gordon, Nola, Maybe Beede.
-
If they take Weaver, they could save around a million, use that to bring in hard high school signs over the next several picks.

The five HR he gave up over 3 games is more than the past 3 years combined. His walk rate is higher, is SO rate is lower, and he's only had one quality start. Looking Past the Numbers: There has been a few cold weather games so far and a lot of postponed games in his season. As it warms up we should get a better feel for what Jorge is capable of at this level. Unfortunately, there's a lot of competition at the low A Rookie level, he could find himself in the bullpen if he can't go six plus innings. That said, He showing some good starts, he just needs to show more of them.

Rumors of the White Sox liking him at 3 would make me think he's still top tier, or that the top tier may not be settled by draft day.
-
I'm disappointed that not many of the hitters have had good springs, I like Jackson, but wish there were more players to compare him too, I still feel Gordon, Zimmer, and Turner are reaches at Five. With 3 college pitchers and 2 high school pitchers rising to the top tier, I think the Twins will have a couple good choices when their name is called.
-
I think very few people on this thread would pick Jackson over Kolek right now (though that might change over the next two months). It might help if people post their top five or six players to give this topic perspective. Mine: 1) Kolek 2) Rodon 3) Beede 4) Aiken 5) Jackson 6) Hoffman So, assuming My top 4 are already off the board do I go Jackson or Hoffman? If Hoffman numbers keep sliding, I'm taking the top hitter, leaving him at catcher for now, and going deep in pitching the rest of the draft for the 3rd year in a row. And in 5 years If Jackson is moved to the outfield and looks ready to dominate like Myers, then I'm trade proven OF talent for pitching prospects like they did with Span. Honestly, If Hicks turns into even a halfway decent hitter, at some point isn't being traded his fate anyway?

A Grant Hockin Profile.

What to watch for in 2014: Felix will be starting in The Cedar Rapids rotation. As you can see from his stats, there isn't a lot of areas he needs to improve on besides reducing his walk rate, but there are 4 general areas to watch for: 1, Can he get off to a strong start. With so many talented starters in High A Fort Myers, Low A Cedar Rapids, and Extended Spring Training, the cream is going to rise to the top, and a slow start could lead to a move to the pen or getting sent down faster than in other years. 2, How will he adapt to more advanced hitter in a colder climate? 3, How will his 2nd half numbers look? This will be his first full season, and durability is key for starter prospects. 4, will he ever smile in a photo.

1.17 2.19

Scouting Report: Felix has an easy, repeatable delivery coupled with improved command of the strike zone. He has the ability to set up hitters and execute his pitches. Felix's curveball is a plus pitch, with some slide to it. His change up is an average pitch, but he has a good feel for it. His fastball has kept gaining speed over the years, going from around 88 MPH when he was 16, to low 90's in Rookie ball, to approaching mid 90's now. There is still some projection in his frame, so he could consistently start hitting mid 90's as he matures. This is where scouts get split: Scouts who see his fastball staying in the low 90's tend to project him to be a mid- rotation starter, scouts who see signs of the fastball keep gaining speed, are projecting a frontline starter. Felix is reported to having strong work ethic and high intelligence. 2011 and 2012 In Review: Ben Balder projected Felix Jorge as getting the 31st largest bonus. He ended up signing months past the July 2nd for $250,000. There was talk that his fastball had lost command and velocity. After the Twins saw him pitch at the Dominican prospect all star game. That summer the Twins put him on their DSL team where he pitch as a starter and a reliever, showing shaking command at times, but still favorable numbers overall. He was promoted the next year to the Gulf cost league where is ERA and SO improved, though his walked increased slightly. 2013 in Review: This was the first year where Felix pitched solely from the rotation. He kept the ball on the ground, increased the strikeouts, showed increased velocity, and kept his ERA under 3 again. Some fans at Twins Daily expected a late season promotion to the midwest league, but that didn't happen. He started to pop up on top 20 Twins prospect list, with many holding off judgement until he got out of rookie ball.
Felix Jorge -
Yeah I remember that, as Seth said he was a six year free agent, and without a 40 man spot he decided to try he's luck elsewhere. His lost was a slight bummer, but as is the case with 98% of these players it will have no negative impact on the Twins. In fact we essentially replaced him with Wilkin Ramirez, who can play better defense, is a club house leader, spanish translator for teammates, a future coach, and has played more MLB games than Solarte thus far. We can get upset about the Bensons, Solartes, and other guys who still have value but over the past 15 years there has only been 3 guys I'm upset the Twins just "Let go" out of hundreds of players that were waved or released.

Having 2 spots free on the 40 man now helps who we can call up or grab off the wire. Santana is in a good place if a middle infielder goes down, not many others on the 40 man as ready as he is.

Kernels Opening Day Roster announced

Guess Sulbaran was the odd man out at High A, Making Gonsalves the odd man out here. The Twins need more hitting at this level, the next trade needs to included an A ball position player. -
Alex Presley claimed off waivers by Astros

So they're going with 'flexibility' planning on having both Escobar and Bartlett be super Utility types. And any offense they can muster With Colabello, Arica, Hicks and Kubel. I get what they're doing, I just wish there was better options to do it with. -
If the field is as wide open in June as it is now, then I think this will be the most debated draft in memory. The buxton pick stirred up some controversy for a year before hitting number one prospect status. Stewart was being hyped by the Twins for a while, so when the big 3 were taken off the board, no one had a big problem with selecting Stewart. This pick at 5, some people are going away pissed on Draft day. I think the uncertainty makes this fun, we all will pull for our favorites!

A top Astros prospect might challenge service time
maxisagod replied to gunnarthor's topic in Other Baseball
This wouldn't go thru the courts, it would be brought to an arbitration panel to make the call. This is most similar to Perkins case several years ago, when he was saying the Twins we're keeping him in the minors longer than he need to be. They came up with a settlement on days, that long term, turns out had no affect on how much he earned. If a player is worth giving a 7 year major league contract last August, but is not worth putting on the roster now that means either the team was foolish to offer the contact to start with, because he wasn't ready and they now see that. Or the team wants cost/ team control for 7 years, not 6, and when the player wouldn't sign a potential team friendly deal, they decided to keep him in the minors in a projected bad season until they get that 7th season. The latter is very hard to prove, unless they out right say it in front of witness. -
I'm glad MLB teams can play a couple games in different nations in an attempt to spread the game and it broaden it's influence. It a great reach out plan and must be fun for the players, I wish my work brought me to Japan, Australia or China so I could work there for a few days. I'm also glad it wasn't the Twins who were playing, I don't like see lost Minnesota/ Minneapolis tax revenue when teams get to play home games somewhere else.
