  1. Didn't they go with a catcher in that mock? There's an argument that can be made that the Twins Minor league system is weakest behind the plate. A top notch High school catcher would take longer to develop but would be ready in 5-6 year around the time Mauer is a free agent or at least is ready to move to 1st base for most of the time. There is a lot of college pitching bunch around the end of the 1st round, some of that could easily fall to the Twins at the top of the 2nd round. Between the trades they made last off season, the trades they could make at the deadline, and the progression of the arms from the last draft, pitching may not look like a weak spot by this time next year.
  2. I'd say Buxton could have MVP ceiling or a top 15 hitter in baseball peak. Everyone else in this draft seems a step or two below that, pitchers and hitters. I'm hoping a 3rd pitcher like Manaea climbs up to that high 2 range that Gray and Appel are currently at.
  3. No, if they were released it had more to do with someone better and probably younger also was in line for a spot on the roster. Between free agents and minor league free agents it becomes a numbers game. They look at the rosters and make the call and 19 times out of 20 it never comes back to bit you in the behind.
  4. Bump. Those are some great rewards. It's almost like pre-ordering you movie.
  5. The fun part of that game is being able to directly compare two top talented LHP with each other. In most college or even low A games, the real talent stands out and it's hard to gauge 'how' good a guy is compared to other top players. In this case Manaea was a step (or a 1/2 a round to a round) better than Windle. One of the ways Windle was better than Manaea though, was Tom did a better job fielding his postion. After he throws a pitch, Manaea back faces the batter, leaving it up to 3B, SS, and 2B to charge in on lightly hit balls. This lead to a couple of Gophers getting infield singles. Windle's follow thru leaves him facing the batter and he was able to make a few hard plays on bunts or swinging bunts. That was great to see.
  6. Okay I know he's the Twins' King of the Scouts, but Deron Johnson is the only scout I've ever seen that has his own entourage. I lost count, how many Gophers did Manaea strike out?
  7. I think there's a chance that Manaea is around at 4. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I'm still of the option the Astros will a sign a top 5-8 guy and spend their money on tougher signings later on, like last year. That would give the Twins a de facto #3 overall pick, and I can think of at least two guys that could easily be taken before Manaea. ...OR the same thing happens as last year and the Astro's pick the guy I like and I'm sitting there on Draft Day going "Well now who do I root for? I've got five minutes to pick a new favorite?".
  8. No not anymore, to be honest they did more Damage then good sometimes. If Appel shows off that he is clearly the best pick, he could still get by the Astros, but the Cubs and Rockies have good relationships with Boras, so one of them would pick him up.
  9. Rarely, since it's one of the hardest denfenisve postions, not many other players who can play it, are playing somewhere else instead. Maybe CF, but it's a different skill set. More range verus quicker reflexives. I'd like the Twins to sign more SS from the International market, I'm thinking they've hade more success there.
  10. it's depleted, but not barren. The return would depend on If the Jays are in the race, what kind of 1st half of the season Morneau has had, what the Jays are willing to offer for 1/2 a season, and if that's more than the supplemental pick the Twins would get for offering a contract (assuming he's worth offering one to). Sean Nollin is a left handed starter who made it to AA last year, Daniel Norris is another Lefty with #2 upside and a mid 90's fast ball that would move up with Sano and Rosario. Marcus Stroman was a righty the Twins liked in last year's draft. He could be a power reliever or he has 4 good pitches so maybe he could be a starter too. He would be available to trade for in late June/ July. I'd rather the Twins trade him for a couple high upside guys in A ball that few of us have heard of yet, but the Twins have a lot of good info on.
  11. cmb0252 is referring to the comment section of this link: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2013/2/22/4013450/2013-mlb-draft-top-100-draft-prospects You right not many will offer you 5M or 100,000 dollars; that would set you up with a great windfall for the rest of your life. The point Sickels seems to be making is if you already have a large fiscal safety net in the form of a well off family, and a Sanford eduction, and then you turn down millions from the Pirates it may not just be because your agent is greedy, there may be an element of pride. What if all the questions and photos of him with Andrew Luck makes him feel his value is much higher than the team who drafts him? There are lots of professional athletes who after being offered a large payday might feel responisable or compelled to take it in order to support and give back to family and friends who have very little. Appel may not have that sense of responisablity knowing there a good chance he'll be able to provide for himself and others no matter what.
  12. Bodlt is right now, though if he doesn't get hot right away it could cut down on the number of scouts that come to watch. Rochester high school isn't a hot bed for scouting and his stock could drop slightly as the year goes on. AJ Puk I've seen in 2nd round on a few lists at least.
  13. AJ Puk would be a good target for the 2nd round. Ryan Boldt would be to hard to pass up if some how he fell to the twins at pick 42 overall, even though he's another tooly center fielder.
  14. Here's is a write up by Steve Adams on 4 of these guys from last July. International Prospects: Thorpe, Minier, Tovar, Silva - Twinkie Town Minier looks really promising, If Thorpe adds a couple MPH on his fast ball he could be a steal.
  15. Must mean Mike Trout.....
  16. Assuming he has a simular season to last year with no new injury concerns, then yes he will. Boras' job is to get the most money for his clients. Boras will start negotiations by say Appel should have gone 1-1 and should get paid like he's the 1st overall draft pick. He'll than wait it out watching how the Twins spend their money on their other picks ( if I remember correctly, because Appel is a college senior he's signing deadline might be later than the other players) and then Boras will make a "compromise" the amount above slot the team can spend before they loss a draft pick, but still above the amount the team gets fined for going past team budjet. All the while, talking about Appel wiliness to go to Independent ball or excitement about the prospect of playing in Japan. So no, he won't come cheap. On the other hand if Appel is injured at some point or has a down year, than he would sign for slot. Both sides will have leverage, it how they are willing to use it which will determine the outcome and amount.
  17. The Twins in the past, have favored guys who do well in the Cape Cod League. Manaea did excellent there, so I'm guessing their early scouting reports are high on the lefty. The Twins minors don't have a lot of strong Lefty starters either, might be there number one need right now. The Twins will probably go with BPA with their 1st round pick, BUT all things being equal, The Twins system is low on good catchers right now and one of the drafts strength is prep catchers. As the college season starts up, look for smoke coming from the Astros, Cubs, and Rockies. The Cubs wanting Almora was leaked pretty early last year, but The Astro wanting Correa wasn't known till Bud got to the podium.
  18. I'm pretty sure Amaury Minier will be moving from SS to 3rd base and there is a good chance he'll be in Gulf Coast League this year. There's more 3rd Base depth for you. A good player pushes his way onto a Major League roster. If Harrison has been playing 3B and is killing it with his bat he'll take any opening at RF, 3B, 1B, DH... If Harrison show he simply can't handle 3rd base they'll move him, but it will limit his routes to the majors. So keep him their until he shows he can't handle it. Remember being a below average defender doesn't mean they can't handle 3rd base, being an awful defender does.
  19. Which teams are in a playoff hunt could also matter. Building a "culture of winning" is hardly a proven practice in player development, but you have to assume the managers in Cedar Rapids, Fort Myers, and New Britain are going to be asking to hold or promote the systems top prospects for the playoffs.
  20. John Sickel's just finished his 2013 prospect book. From time to time here shares some of the prospect write up's as a promotion. Here is the link for the write up on Travis Harrison along with some other guy named Billy Hamilton. Enjoy. Player Comments: Billy Hamilton, Jesse Hahn, Mitch Haniger, Travis Harrison - Minor League Ball
  21. You have 2 2nd Baseman on the same team in Levi Michael and Eddie Rosario. Do you see Levi getting more at bats at SS or Eddie getting more at bats in Center? DH could be used some of the time, but with the Twins wanting both of them to improve their Defense and Kennys Vargas being on that team as well, I can't see that being the regular solution.
  22. Does he have any arbitration years left?
  23. Ridiculous? No. Unnecessary. Maybe. Almost all the teams will between 38-40 by the end of the night. There's a couple guys they added that (I think) wouldn't be able to stick to a 25 man roster all year, but the Twins feel differently. The 8 guys they did add do stay on the 40 man until the end of spring training, unless they're traded, which for some is a possibility. There are 32 other guys they can trade, pass thru waivers, or drop if they need to... and they will. What I read into this is, the 4 open rotation spots will not all be filled by ML free agent signings. There is going to be some trades, If not now, then by the Winter meetings which will open up a couple spots.
  24. Butera, Field easily moved. Swarzak isn't arb eligible so they'll definitely keep him. He would also be lost. Oliveros will be out for all of 2013, but that makes him an easy pick in the Rule 5 because the other team can keep him all next year on their DL and then bring him back the following year. Guerra could possibly sneak through. Mastroianni maybe could sneak through, but he's an ideal 4th OF, so I'd keep him. Herrmann would be claimed by a bunch of teams. Oliveros would be the 1st player the twins would remove if they sign someone. If he's out most of 2013, then the rule five rules would apply in 2014 as well.
