  1. In general using Cy Young and Nolan Ryan to make a point doesn't equate to a good argument. You might as well ask the question, why can't the average pitcher today be as good as the greatest pitchers that ever threw. They're in the HOF for a reason, they were better than everyone else in all aspects (quality and quantity).
  2. You can't walk around a sound!
  3. With no context I find this comment rather random and highly amusing. I suppose I'll find context by clicking somewhere at which point I'll be less amused by it. What to do, what to do...
  4. I'd guess one tangible benefit to the player is that they are required to be on the MLB roster the entire season, therefore, they get paid MLB league minimum which for some of the rule 5 guys may be the only time they get paid.
  5. I believe the Twins will seriously evaluate all of these guys. That doesn't mean they like these pitchers or like what they are recovering from but it isn't unlike when they signed Pineda to a 2 year deal knowing the first year was a recovery year from TJ surgery.
  6. Maybe this is obvious but if he is still throwing 2 distinct off speed pitches, a slider and a curve, the key then would be to figure out why they now look the same. Personally I'd set up statcast cameras and start throwing until I could get it to see a distinction between the two. But then, I don't have a coaching staff to analyze my mechanics. If he has ditched the slider, maybe the question needs to be ... why?
  7. If Cruz got to bat behind himself he'd have a lot more RBI. He's on base 40% of the time.
  8. So far I wouldn't lump Maeda into the 4-5 inning group. He's has thrown fewer than 6 innings twice this season (one predictably being his first start). The other 4 starts were 6+ with one of those being 8 (after which he predictably threw 5). At this point I'd expect a solid 6.
  9. In the technology world using video to find rectangles is actually pretty easy to do. Even moving rectangles are pretty easy to deal with. Big rectangles driving down the road are found every day by video. I'm not really sure what's all that difficult about it. Radar guns have been able to pick up baseballs for decades now. Combine the two at a fixed position and it seems like it should be something they could dial in in a short amount of time. On the other hand, I'm not the one implementing it. My best to them. Initially I guarantee a large number of batters will think they know how to game the system by dancing/crouching/etc. It'll look like Don Knotts is up there. Could be fun.
  10. I was thinking Cleveland Rocks. They'd play that Ian Hunter song every game. Or maybe the Drew Carey version. Either way, it'd be fun.
  11. That would be cool. They could convert the tomahawk chop to that of swinging a hammer just by closing the fingers into a fist.
  12. So if the action doesn't solve any "real problem" then it shouldn't be done? Progress isn't enough? Only whole solutions allowed? How in the world would anything change?
  13. I agree and this is why if he's not voted in, I think he'll eventually make it in via the Veterans Committee.
  14. Due to that link being from 2006 it does not include Buster Posey having won the batting title and MVP in 2012. I believe that's it though.
  15. A really interesting book is David Helyar's "The Lords of the Realm". Yes, it's about player/owner relations over the years, but I found it to give great insight into how things got to where they are. The edition I read went through 1995(?) or so. There's lots of fun stories in it illustrating how the owners don't even trust each other let alone the players. For Twins fans, there's a great story in there about how Cal Griffith was involved in the Dodgers moving west (hint: he was outmaneuvered). Good stuff.
  16. Mauer's contract had NOTHING to do with who or how they paid anyone else. The owner/FO made a decision to pay for nobody else. They were in a new stadium bringing in tons of cash and they CHOSE to keep payroll down. They had the money to pay free agents yet chose year after year to not do that. 2011 $113M 2012 $94M 2013 $75M 2014 $86M 2015 $109M 2016 $108M If you notice they actually dropped payroll after they got into the new stadium. They stated they'd pay about 50% of revenues which were about $250M which should have had a payroll of $125M. So why didn't they? Mauer's contract had NOTHING to do with it. Greed did.
  17. I'm not sure about Story in MN. Story's career OPS away from Coors is .756 (home=.998) and last year wasn't that far off. So, since we aren't in Colorado, I'd temper any expectations. Of course I'm only focusing on one portion of his game, but it's an important one.
  18. I agree with you about the secondary money stuff. But what part of "Wheeler turned down a higher offer in order to sign with Philadelphia and stay in the NL East" and "Bumgarner turned down a higher offer in order to sign with Arizona and stay in the NL West" are you choosing to ignore? With these two, it wasn't going to happen. Ryu? Look at his age (33) and history (1 season with over 130 IP in the last 4). You have a FO that uses analytics, do you seriously think they would value Ryu all that much? Even if you don't use analytics much, why would you put any sort of long term value on Ryu?
  19. Okay, let's go beyond the top 5, who would you have signed Mike from FG's top 30? I'm sorry if you've already posted this but given 12 pages of comments it's a bit hard to wade through them all. I see lots of names on there that probably aren't possibilities (Wainwright will die a Cardinal for instance), but who realistically would we truly want because we think they're going to be better than our rookies?
  20. So much panic. Cole - too expensive and not coming here.Strasburg - too expensive and not coming here.Wheeler - turned down more money in order to sign with Philadelphia (near his wife's home town) and stay in the NL East.Bumgarner - turned down more money in order to sign with Arizona and stay in NL West.Ryu - moved to Toronto where there's a much larger Asian population than Minneapolis. Plus our history with Asian players is limited and ... poor. Plus given his injury history I'm not sure about him. Which of those top 5 were realistic signings for the Twins? Would have been nice, but I'm not so sure we had much control over it. Moving on...
  21. I don't recall reading that in this thread. What I recall reading (over and over) is while it would have been a "really good thing" to sign an expensive FA (which we didn't), it isn't time to panic yet. I may be wrong, please point out who said that?
  22. Mitch Garver will be 29 by Opening Day. He seems to have found some new angles this past season by working with a new coaching staff. Unfortunately, the catching coach was hired away, but the philosophy is still around, so one never knows what a 28 year picks up.
  23. Even more ridiculous, if you live in Hawaii all California games are "local" and therefore, blacked out. Yeah, I'm just gonna jump in the car and run over for a game... It's actually better than it was, at one point both Seattle and Arizona were also "local".
  24. As everyone has said, I like Rosario. But we have some holes on the team and our position of strength is in HR. Would it seriously hurt the Twins if they only had 4 30 HR hitters this season? Or 7 20 HR hitters? Not appreciably. And I wouldn't expect his replacement to cover his raw numbers. So, if we trade from a position of strength, then my vote would be to move Rosario. I don't like his lapses in the field nor on the basepaths. I don't like that too many of his at-bats are not quality (too few pitches and swinging at non-strikes too often). And even though he was playing through injury this season the above issues aren't attributable to an injury, it's just who he is and the previous seasons reveal it. He's fun and I root for him, but if the Twins front office feels the need to address holes via trade from the major league roster, my choice would be to trade Eddie.
  25. Right on all counts. He pauses to watch it before even getting out of the box, then 3/4 speeds it around 1st, and he only starts going full speed about 1/2 way to 2nd. And Stone is right, he has been doing it the whole series. Rosario has to tighten his game up.
