  1. My "I was at that game" is when a struggles-to-jog Jim Thome hit a ball off the corner of the right field wall of Target Field, and ended up with a triple. Just absolute joy from the crowd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cts-aLwYGVI
  2. Also, if you use Dobnak to start today, he probably only gives you 3, which means you either have to use 4-6 guys out of your bullpen, or you need Thorpe for long relief anyways, so Thorpe was always (in all likelihood), going to need to pitch tonight anyways. I would argue that maybe instead you use Thorpe as your second starter for the DH on Wednesday, but maybe they didn't want to miss with Berrios' rhythm, perhaps they were desperate to get win(s), and wanted their two best guys to go, or they wanted to get a look at Kiriloff without having to use the kind of option that relegates him to the alternate site for 10 days after being sent back down. This also suggests that Dobnak will spend all his time in the bullpen until a starter gets hurt.
  3. Because due to the DH, you'll have SP pile up starting tomorrow (Happ on 3 days tomorrow, Maeda on 3 days Sunday). By doing this today, you keep Happ and Maeda on regular rest, and buy an extra day for Shoemaker.
  4. Shaun Anderson down, after being recalled yesterday. What was everyone's favorite Shaun Anderson moment?
  5. We'll see if it's just SSS to start a career, but right now Vaughn is making less than 20% hard contact (despite pulling the ball over 60% of the time), is swinging and missing at a higher rate than Miguel Sano, and is below average against fastballs and changeups (although above average against everything else).
  6. It should be noted that the stats Ted gave were prior to yesterday's game. As such, Sano is now up to .100/.308/.250, with a 23.1% walk rate and a 34.6% k rate (both career bests). When Sano's babip normalizes (its still at .176), he will be perfectly serviceable.
  7. We should definitely sit the guy with a .599 OPS despite a .176 babip in order to get more PA's for the guy with a .451 OPS despite a .444 babip.
  8. This is an old and tired stereotype of the Ryan era Twins that no longer holds water, and actually stopped holding water towards the end of the Ryan era anyways. See below for a list of current/former Twins, and the age at which they debuted. Sano--22 Polanco-22 (technically 20, but his first significant stint came when he was 22) Arraez--22 Rosario--23 Kepler--23 Buxton--21 Berrios--22 Players who do well in the minors get pushed to the majors quickly. There is no similarly long list of players who were tearing up AA/AAA at 21/22/23, and yet didn't make the majors until 25.
  9. This. This is the problem with Rocco, who I think is good, except for anything that happens at the ballpark on the day a game is played. He seems to lack a feel for the game, as well as the attribute of anticipation. As Aggies said, why not tell Robles to start warming as soon as the Twins make the third out in the bottom of the 7th, but do so leisurely? If Pineda cruises in the 8th, you can sit him down, and treat it like a side session. If Pineda gives up a hit, you go have a conference at the mound for a minute while Robles accelerates his warm up, and then bring him in after chatting about the weather until the ump forces you to make a move. As concerns Shoemaker, I think people's issue was that Shoemaker seemingly got a longer leash than Maeda and Berrios had earlier in the season, despite not pitching more than 80 innings since 2016. That's the kind of guy where once you're past the fourth, you act immediately at the first sign of trouble.
  10. The league hit a homer every 27 PA's in 2019. It was at 33 in 2018, 30 in 2017, 29 in 2020, and so far in 2021, it's back to 33. There is a seasonal factor to that, but in 2019, it was still 29 PA's per homer in March/April. It seems pretty clear that the Twins roster was built to hit homers, and in the one year homers were markedly up, they ruled. In the years they're not, they struggle.
  11. So our infield defense in the 9th inning of a tie game will be... 1B-Garver 2B-Arraez SS-Polanco 3B Sano Question Mark? Nothing's getting through that iron curtain of gold gloves!
  12. I am flabbergasted that Garver is hitting for Riddle, and not Jeffers. This is completely illogical.
  13. Any reason whatsoever Donaldson wouldn't hit for Riddle?
  14. Well, that was a whole lot of delay for absolutely no reason.
  15. I don't hate it. I also think there's something to going to 3 balls and 2 strikes, or saying that 3 balls hit foul is an out. The latter would cap plate appearances at 8 pitches. I also think you make a rule that batters are not allowed to leave the batter's box once they step in to stare the PA, and pitchers are allowed to make a pitch any time a batter is in the box.
  16. I would love to see an experiment with only 8 fielders, and all homeruns count for only one run, and automatically end the inning (unless it's of the inside the park variety).
  17. Come on Chief, you're not fooling anyone. The Sirens from your day are below (bonus--I'm pretty sure that's you tied to the mast!)
  18. So Little Caesar's has a commercial, where they imagine the executives of a rival pizza chain on a private jet admitting they could match LC's price, but they'd have to fly commercial. Which is pretty funny when you realize that the founder and CEO of LC made so much freaking money he could buy a baseball team.
  19. What if the siren was just a recording of woos?
  20. Bremer: "Arraez makes a diving catch!" Diving is a very charitable description of what Luis did just now.
  21. Well, I think we might be approaching the annual "Willians Astudillo still isn't a quality MLB hitter" day.
  22. Ultimately, I'm not sure why a hitter is expected to deal with thousands of screaming fans, but a tornado siren is somehow beyond anyone's ability to focus through.
