    To the eyes-on-the-ground Chatty correspondents, thanks for the great info! One question--what's going on with Stuart Turner? I had hoped he would build on last years success in the second half, and give us a good defensive catcher with some hitting ability.

    Not really. Let's say Aaron Hicks is in AAA until June 1, giving him a decent sample size. Let's say he's hitting .300/.375/.450 at that point. Does that guarantee he'll hit in the bigs? What if that was his line after being at AAA until August 1? The time to find out if we have soemthing in Hicks is now. Let's say he's not in the Twins plans going forward, because of Buxton/Rosario/Arcia/ABW/Plouffe; is there any GM out there who will think more of him because he has a great line at AAA? The only way to build his value is to have him succeed at the Major League level, and the time to do that is growing shorter.

    It is laughable that Hicks remains in AAA while Jordan Schafer eats up AB's in the bigs. There are no words.

    MiLB had a nice write-up yesterday about Gonsalves where he talked about how training with and learning from Strasburg and Shields in the offseason really helped him. In the story, it also mentioned that his fastball is in the low 90's, with a decent change, and he has an iffy slider and curve. As for the bunting to break up a no-hitter being against the unwritten rules, that is the stupidest thing ever. The pitchers job is to get outs, and the hitters job is to avoid making outs, however he can. If you don't want to give up a bunt single, then play a bunt defense. Otherwise, get over it and move on.

    Please, please, please a starting pitcher with ace potential. With Meyer not exactly lighting the world on fire, and Kohl Stewart apparently allergic to strikeouts, we could use a guy that profiles as a potential top-of-the-rotation arm, as right now we have a collection of 2-3's

    The solution is simple, but impossible. Call up Doc Brown, tell him to fire up the Delorean, and stop TR, from consummating a deal with Hunter. Keep Arcia in right, call up Hicks and play him every day (so at the end of the year you know whether you should keep him or not), and move Santana to left. Esco plays every day at short, and voila, you've improved your defense at at least two spots, without giving up much in offense.

    Thanks Seth, I missed the write-up on him, so this was a nice quick hit! As a small-ish guy who relied on speed myself, I've always had something of a soft spot for that type of guy myself.

    Seth, can you tell me a bit more about Zach Granite? He has great stats to start the year--.373 BA, .500 OBP, and more walks than strikeouts! Is he thought of as a potential push candidate to A+ if he keeps this up for another 3-4 weeks?

    That should be correct, since if you're driving south from Minnesota, you end up in Louisiana, not Canada. Unless you have some sort of fancy boat-car, and you're attempting a North/South circumnavigation, in which case observation time is the critical factor.

    On the urinal subject, it's also important that if there are 3 of them, and all three are open, you must never choose the middle urinal. It is only polite to give another person the option to stand next to you, or not.

    I would guess that the "braintrust" is familiar with UZR, but because it can't be scouted with the eye test, doesn't use it. I would also imagine that they remember very well what Hunter did in 2007, but figured the potential of a few thousand more tickets, jerseys, and concessions sold due to the homerism of rubes would more than offset that + the $10m they're paying him to be a mentor (which, given that Rosario, Buxton, and Hicks are all in the minors, apparently he's mentoring Schafer and Robinson).

    That's because the locals think UZR is a modified Israeli machine gun, and don't remember the first-rate donkey Hunter was on his way out of town in 2007. Every week, he appeared as a guest on the Dan Barreiro show to profess how much he wanted to be in Minnesota, but that is wasn't up to him. He claimed it was in the Twins best interest to talk to him as soon as possible, so when the FO offered to re-work his deal, he of course refused to even negotiate. And lo and behold, when he got his free agency, he rejected the Twins offer, and demonstrated that it WAS up to him. Now, I'm not saying Hunter should have taken 3 and 45 instead of the Angels' 5 and 90. I'm just saying be honest about what you're after, which in his case, was the money.

    Banishing Hunter from the lineup is a good start. Now how do we do the same with Schafer (without replacing him with Robinson)? Also, I'd like to order the Josmil Pinto for my starter at catcher please.

    Hunter's going to get as many at bats as his health allows. He's not a stopgap player (even though he should be). If he's healthy, he's playing. Regardless of what Hicks/Ortiz/Rosario/Buxton are doing in the minors. Just one more reason why I hated and still hate the signing.

    It's like the Good Lord wants Meyer or May in the rotation, and the Twins just won't listen. What is the point of moving Pelfrey back from the bullpen (where he might have created some value), instead of seeing what May or Meyer could do. I've been a Twins optimist, and sometimes apologist, for most of this decade, but I HATE this roster. Hunter, Robinson, Milone, Pelfrey, Stauffer, and Nunez have no business playing for us in the roles they're in. I'm just disgusted by this.

    Torii Hunter on this team is infuriating. He forces Arcia to left, where his defensive flaws go from obvious to glaring. He is himself a terrible fielder, so we have the worst possible corner fielders in the league. He forces Santana to short, instead of a corner which would be the ideal place for him, which forces Esco to the bench. The only thing Hunter does is sell jerseys to the rubes who have forgotten the disingenuous manner in which he left.

    It's like the Twins brass can't decide if they want to compete now, or build for the future. Because of that, they try to strike a balance between the two, and end up doing neither. They call up Arcia, Vargas, and Santana, and get production--future They sign Torii Hunter, despite the fact he worsens an already bad center field--now They seriously consider Trevor May for the rotation--future They go with Tommy Milone instead, who was not good last year, and showed no reason to be optimistic for change in spring training--now I'm getting so tired of this team continually running out tired old veterans with little to no upside, and zero chance of being on the next division-winning team (Hunter, Milone, Robinson, Stauffer). For once, just let kids who might be part of the future play, so we can find out what we actually have.

    Wait a minute, a start with a 1.8 WHIP, 5.4 ERA, and 5.4 k/9 qualifies as "fairly good" Tommy Milone? If that's true, cut him right now.

    This is a really good deal for both sides. Dozier leaves money on the table, but guarantees himself 20m. The twins save themselves money, and have Dozier as an even more attractive trade option should they choose to go that route.

    I think a starting 5 of Hughes, Gibson, May, Meyer, and Berrios would be exciting at least 40% of the time, but it would be exciting for the opposing lineup. I love the potential in our kids, and I'm as anxious as anyone to see them in Twins unis, but Meyer would struggle to get through the 5th inning, Berrios was ineffective in his triple-a starts at the end of last year, Buxton has 3 ab's above A ball, and Sano hasn't played in a year. Letting them start in the minors is not the end of the world.

    Is Sano really up to 260? I knew he was big, but I thought more in the 230 to 240 range. 260 is Vargas big.
