  1. I thought Rosario's splits against lefties was actually better than against righties. Oh well.
  2. I wish Paul Molitor would tell that kid, "Don't worry, we'll whip you into shape." That would be frightening.
  3. Esco!! The probability of a Twins win just went over 50 percent!
  4. Woof, just for a sec I thought Eddie got all that one. Guess it was a little off the end. Now let's see if Trevor May's back is better than Perkins's back.
  5. Duffey's curve actually looked better after a hundred pitches. Finally got that thing warmed up. Good outing. Good show by Boyer, too.
  6. These guys are sitting on Duffey's curve. He needs to straighten them up and throw some changes.
  7. These hitters are crowding the plate. Time for eine kleine chinmusik.
  8. A good change-up would get a swing half a foot under it.
  9. After his second scoreless inning, Tyler Duffey stomped off the mound with an angry expletive. That was ambition. Duffey wants to be better than good; he wants to be completely dominant. I think he could get there.
  10. Based on the hints, I'd guess Dozier's got a strained oblique, which will heal up just fine with a couple weeks off and some hot showers. Right after the season ends, or after they're out of the hunt. This is another reason the Twins need to find a utility infielder to replace Eduardo Escobar, who should have the SS job locked up for next season. Jorge Polanco could step in for that role in 2016, along with Danny Santana. 162 games is too long for most players to operate at their top level. You've got to rotate guys for a little recovery time. The good news is, it looks like the Twins could have a lot of positional versatility in 2016. Polanco and Santana in the infield, Kepler in the outfield. I suppose Nunez and Santana will compete for the super utility role.
  11. At this point it would be better for Perkins if the Twins fell out of the race. His core is messed up. He needs some months of healing and rehab before he will get back his command. Even then, he's going to have to pitch fewer innings going forward. In 2016 platoon him with Jepsen, bring up Burdi, etc.
  12. Flip the script for a moment. Imagine that starter Trevor May goes five one-run innings in a playoff hunt, then Mike Pelfrey steps in to give the team two or three clean innings, better than Casey Fein, and he can do that every other day. That's the beauty of having Pelfrey in the pen in 2016. That's why the Twins should offer him a new contract based on being a middle reliever, where he'd be dominant for four or five years. As a starter, Pelfrey is a disaster waiting to happen after five innings. Either he gets fatigued or they figure out his 2- or 3-pitch mix. But give him 3 to 6 batters, and he can blow them away before they adjust. Meanwhile, Trevor May should be one of the big, strong young starters that can give this team seven innings per outing. Of course I'm talking about 2016. I also see bullpen roles for Hughes and Nolasco, with possible spot starts for any one of them. That's the best way to use guys whose arms are getting too worn out for starting. The pen is for rookies, specialists, and aging veterans.
  13. This is a very interesting topic. If Gibson's slider and change are underused, that could be just the thing he needs for early innings, when he is more likely to over-throw his sinker. As for pressure, that's a slippery one. Gibson's expression on the mound is steely determination. He has excellent balance and poise, so his command should be pretty reliable. I'm fine with either Gibson or Duffey in a wild card game. Those are the two best options. I'd still pick Gibson, based on experience. The Twins' patchwork rotation has done a remarkable job keeping the team afloat. First prize for milk carton and duct tape boats. Unfortunately, most playoff teams have more than two healthy starting pitchers, so the Twins probably can't go much farther than the wildcard game anyway. Making it this far has been pretty impressive.
  14. Pelfrey to the pen. Troubles making up this playoff lineup stem from the old Twins giving way to the new Twins of 2016. My temptation here would be to let the younger players with upside have a taste of playoff ball, if the team actually makes it that far.
  15. Reality check: Glenn Perkins just had one cortisone shot in his neck, then another in his lower back, and you're wondering what's wrong with him? He's 32 years old and his body is falling apart, that's what's wrong. Throwing pitch after pitch at professional velocity damages your body, even if you do it right. What I can't understand is why the Twins didn't shut Perkins down after the second cortisone shot. How are his back and neck supposed to recover if he keeps throwing baseballs? They must figure that he won't do much more harm if he finishes the season, and then he's got months to heal up...if he heals up. We're watching a heroic bit of courage from a guy that's injured. He's trying to keep his team in a playoff hunt, and he's doing it with an iffy back. What else can go wrong? Well, if an ump doesn't call strikes on the corners, and then you pipeline one and it gets hammered over the fence. I'd chuckle about that, too.
  16. I expect to see Eddie Rosario expand and refine his game much the same way that Brian Dozier has done, for they are similar characters. With Bruno's help Rosario should improve his situational awareness and ability to read pitchers. Molitor and company should teach him (along with the other young guys) how to better steal bases, bunt, etc. When Rosario, Buxton, Kepler and the other young guns incorporate the finer aspects of the game, this team is going to be even more fun to watch. Goodie!
  17. Now Perk has to go home and have dinner. Naughty Perkins!
  18. Dick came close to a Yogi-ism: To stay in the race, you have to keep winning.
  19. Hit the ball where it's pitched, but the other way.
  20. Finished him with a crushing walk.
  21. Finish him, Mr. Hicks. FINISH HIM!
  22. Esco! And Sano didn't have to run hard!
  23. Rosario should have faked a bunt. That's the secret to hitting Kluber.
  24. WTF?? Dozier mocks the rules by hitting a home run to right field.
  25. Yogi Berra is one of those guys that everybody wishes they knew. I think I'll imagine him teaching little kids how to bunt and throw a curve ball.
