  1. I agree that there is some team willing to give Slama a shot, especially after his performance last year.
  2. I believe that the addition of Pinto signals the end of Butera's tenure with the Twins. No way are the Twins going to keep 5 catchers on the 40 man roster, so I expect Butera to be non-tendered.
  3. The Twins have added the following to their 40 man roster: Aaron Hicks (outfielder) Danny Santana (Infielder) Josmil Pinto (Catcher) Caleb Thielbar (LHP) Kyle Gibson (RHP) B.J. Hermsen (RHP) Michael Tonkin (RHP) Tim Wood (RHP) With these additions, the 40-man roster is full.
  4. Insanely paying $150M up front? First off, they promised to pay $150M up front. If you can't see how it makes a difference whether they borrowed the money, or invested their own funds, then look no farther than their player payroll budget. That should help illuminate it for you. Secondly, the value of their franchise went up something on the order of $200M before the ink was dry on the stadium deal. I'm thinking any smart business person would invest $150 to make $200, or $150M to make $200M, and add in greater annual revenues to the pot in either case, by the way. Or...I guess even better...if they could get away with it...invest $0 to make $200M. I don't ever recall them ever promising to pay $150M upfront.
  5. Also, even though the Pohlad Family has a net worth of $3B, how much of that do you think is liquid? Do you think they had $150M available to pay for their share in cash out of pocket? Since their net worth is tied up in the several businesses that they own, I doubt it (At least not until Pepsi bought back their stake in the bottling company).
  6. Illitch owns both the Red Wings and Tigers. He is desperate to win WS title before he dies.
  7. This is the case. All poll modelling is based on the turnout of the previous election. They poll Republicans, Democrats and Independents in the same ratio that turned out in 2008. So they only track the change in the Independent votes. They don't track the change in ratios. And it seems that more Republicans intend to turn up while more Democrats stay home.
  8. Baker's quote was reported after it was announced that they declined his option.
  9. It's really not that big of a deal since they had to decline the option by Wednesday anyway and they have exclusive negotiating rights until Saturday.
  10. Correction: The roster stands at 35, not 34.
  11. Only Gutierrez is gone, Walters and the others weren't claimed so they are still property of the Twins unless they are not tendered contracts.
  12. I agree with this, but it has to do with life, not the campaign. Romney has been a leader and a success throughout his life, whereas Obama has virtually never been involved in business his entire life. Also, Romney has been able to show that he can work across the aisle as a Republican Governor in the Heavy Democrat leaning state of Massachusetts. I'll will admit that Romney was not my preferred choice for the Republican nomination (more like my 4th or 5th), but he has my support over Obama.
  13. If the Detroit wins the WS, they will most likely start dumping payroll. Illitch has been going broke trying to get a World Series title out of the Tigers. He owns both the Red Wings and Tigers and was desperate to get a WS title before he dies. The Tigers have been losing $30-40M/year for the last few years in Illithch's efforts to win a title.
  14. Doesn't matter in regards to the awards voting.
  15. The simple answer is yes. Players come and go as they please. Some players only play the first half and some start in December and play the 2nd half/postseason to ramp up going into ST. I don't think many players play the full season.
  16. While I hope that Butera is non-tendered and that Hermann takes over his role on the bench, even if he is kept he will make no where near $1M next year (or ever in his career). Even though he is arbitration eligible, he will still make close to league minimum next year. MLBtraderumors estimates his Arb salary @ $500k.
  17. Being cautious signing FA's is not the same as ignoring it. I simply think you are unrealistic with your expectations. Teams don't go from losing 95 games to being in the playoffs in one season. And history is not kind to franchises that drop big piles of cash on 30 something yr old FA's that are declining. The teams that have been successful doing it usually have top 5 payrolls in baseball AND were bringing up a lot of talent out of their farm system. You can definitely spend some money in FA and I expect the Twins to add 20M to next year's 70M in commitments. Adding 30-40M in yearly salary is just asking for disaster. Teams can go from losing seasons to make the playoffs in one season. Both the Twins and Braves did it in 1991 and the Twins almost did it again in 2001. The Twins went from 74 wins to 95 wins from 1990 and 1991 and from 69 wins to 85 wins from 2000-2001 (finishing 2nd in the division). The Braves went from 64 wins to 94 wins in 1991.
  18. Depends on your definition of a #1. He certainly could be a Twins #1. Which is good enough news for me. Most people consider the bolded portion above the definition of a #1 pitcher. The additional part of the definition that we don't know yet is health.
  19. If you only consider his ability to get on base and take a lot of pitches, then yes he would be a good leadoff hitter. But you usually want someone with good speed/base stealing ability to lead off, which Mauer is not. I suppose an argument for leading off could be based on they way the Yankees use Jeter. Jeter isn't a typical leadoff hitter either and his stats are very similar to Mauer's.
  20. This is completely untrue. The Twins were not willing to pay Santana. The Twins were willing to sign Santana for 4 or 5 years at $20M/year. Under pressure by is agent and the Players Union he wanted to be the highest paid pitcher in baseball. The fact of the matter is Santana wanted out. He wanted to play in a large market. Looking back with how often Santana has been hurt over the last 5 years, I'm sure the Twins are thankful they lost him.
  21. Your pitching matchups are incorrect. Since Sabathia pitched game 5 (Friday) against Baltimore, he won't pitch until game 4 (Wednesday). Hughes is scheduled to pitch against Verlander in Game 3.
  22. You are wrong. The Twins and Gardy have almost always agreed to 2 year extensions when he had 1 year remaining on his contract
  23. Technically 1 starter from the opening day roster was still in the rotation at the end of the season. Liam Hendricks came North with the Twins because Marquis stayed behind due to his daughter's accident.
  24. Technically no one was fired, but both Stelly and Liddle are not having their contracts renewed for 2013.
  25. Tom Powers of the Pioneer Press believes the Glynn, Brunansky and Cuellar from Rochester will be promoted to the Twins' staff. In order to promote them they need to make room. With Stelly's dismissal and Liddle's rumored retirement they already have spots for Cuellar and Glynn. Now they just have to make room for Brunansky. Powers feels that Brunansky will replace Vavra as the hitting coach, but Vavra will remain with the organization in some capacity.
