  1. With Marquis out the Twins actually need 2 starters for the rotation, 1 to pitch Thursday and 1 to take Blackburn's spot on Saturday. Since Manship pitched tonight he is unavailable for Thursday, but he could start Saturday.
  2. Marquis' spot in the rotation won't come up again until Friday (Saturday if they push Pavano back a day), so they won't DFA him (assuming that they do) until Wednesday or Thursday. They have to answer the question "Who is going to Start on Thursday?" if they give Pavano an extra day of rest, before they deal with the Marquis problem.
  3. I agree with this. Plus even when we have had decent pitching in the past, under Anderson the whole starting staff would collapse at the same time (Usually for the month of June).
  4. I think Butera will catch tonight and tomorrow (he is the personal catcher for Walters, Diamond and Pavano). Mauer will have tonight off, play 1st tomorrow and catch on Sunday. Morneau will play 1st tonight and Sunday and have tomorrow off.
  5. It looks like Blackburn is going to the DL instead of Doumit, but does Blackburn have options left? He isn't a 5-yr vet yet so he can be sent down without his permission, but does he have any options left or would have to clear waivers first.
  6. His results so far this season dispute that. He even had a 3-inning outing recently were he retired all righties he faced.
  7. I would normally agree with you based on past performance, but apparently Duensing has made some adjustments against righties this year that seems to be working. So for this year he has faced more righties than lefties and he is holding righties to a .231 and lefties to a .138 which is a lot better than his career .299 split against righties. Duensing is probably going to get another audition for a starting spot in 2013 anyway, might as well start it now. Of course the same can be said for Swarzak, Manship and Hendricks.
  8. The odds of a sweep are pretty good (2 game series), but the odds aren't in the Twins' favor. I like our chances of winning tomorrow, but not tonight. Hopefully Blackie can't cobble together a good outing.
  9. Paul Allen's situation is a little different the Dick & Bert or Gladden & Provus. Paul Allen has a radio show in addition to doing the Vikings broadcasts. So he actually is an employee of KFAN. The Vikings could have him removed as the game broadcaster he they so chose. Dick & Bert and Gladden & Provus all they are paid to do is broadcast the games and were actually hired by the Twins.
  10. While I agree that carrying 13 pitchers needs to be corrected, I think that when Morneau gets back from the DL that Parmelee will be sent to Rochester and Mauer and Doumit will alternate between C and 1B (with Morneau playing occasionally) and Butera will actually be the true backup catcher. Kind of like what was initially planned before they decided to keep Parmelee.
  11. Nice article, but I have 1 correction for you, Mauer "only" pays taxes in Minnesota for half of his income ($900,000 in tax revenue). He (and all professional athletes) pay taxes in the states where the income was earned, not where he is employed or resides. Mauer actually pays a little more than that as Minnesota has a reciprocity agreement with Wisconsin so he pays his Wisconsin tax to Minnesota.
  12. While you are correct, I was responding to why Maloney was immediately added to the 40-man roster. When Smith claimed Maloney off of waivers he had to add him to the 40-man roster.
  13. Maloney was claimed on waivers so he had to be added to the 40-man roster, Smith didn't have a choice. The only other option was to wait to see if he cleared waivers and then try to sign him to a minor league contract.
  14. No pitcher for Texas is averaging over 110 pitches per outing and none have gone past 121. For the most part, Washington takes the starters out between 100 and 110 pitches.
  15. It will probably be another week or 2 before they make any moves.
  16. If this han't been planned weeks ago, I would agree with you. But since it was scheduled ahead of time that he would miss the enitre series, I have no issues with it.
  17. I am okay with the Thomas - Mastroianni swap as well as the Hendricks - Walters. I like Thrylos' suggesting of Ray Chang as we do need a backup infielder and he can play 2B, 3B and SS. A pitcher can be DFA'ed or optioned to make it happen.
  18. I agree with this to a point, but it seems that Gardy has lost the respect and control over his team. He seems to have difficulty managing the younger players. If that is true than it is time for a change. It is similar to the Tony Dungy situation in Tampa. He brought the team back to respectability but couldn't take them any further. So he moved on to Indy and Gruden got Tampa the title. I think Gardy has taken this club as far as he can go and it is time for both parties to try something new.
  19. Doubtful. I don't think the Twins have fired any of the coaching staff in season since 1986.
  20. Well it looks like the Dozier era is going to start soon. By DFA'ing Burroughs, the only backup infielder is Plouffe. The Twins have 2 open spots on the 40-man roster so it looks like when they finally drop to 12 pitchers it will most likely Dozier getting the call and taking over the starting SS spot with Carroll moving to a utility role.
  21. "Give Joe Maurer, Danny Valencia, and Clete Thomas their unconditional release. (when someone, somewhere picks up and renegotiates Joe's contract to market value, use the $23M next year to sign 2 free agent starters to 3-4yr $10M deals. Call up Brian Dozier, Drew Butera, and Joe Benson." If the Twins release Joe Mauer (never happen) and another team snatches him up, why would they renegotiate his contract when the Twins' have to pay it.
  22. Matt Holiday, David Wright and David Ortiz don't play Catcher. The added $8M comes from his ability to put up that OPS from the most physically demanding position in the game.
  23. Out of all of those guys listed, only Molitor would consider the job and he turned it down once already. But that was 10 years ago, the situation may have changed since then. Hrbek enjoys his free time and outdoor activity too much. Smalley, Laudner and Gladden make as much if not more with their broadcasting gigs with a lot less stress.
  24. The player to replace Willingham has probably been informed and is on his way to Minnesota. The club will make the transactions and announcements after the game tonight.
