    I think the bigger issue is that these contracts are used for arb and there's a CBA involved. I agree that to some extent, this can be done, but I don't think it's as simply as a 5/40 at exactly 8M per year like what Mauer signed at exactly 23 per year. These guys aren't true FAs. But yes, if this is allowed, we should do it. It would allow us to keep the core together a bit longer.

    Even with an extension, those guys won't be expensive next year. They could play around with signing bonuses and what not to some extent, but I don't think that will be a huge part of next year's payroll.

    My guess is cap games. Teams like the Royals have a ton of picks and can work some underslot magic to get them.

    His bat. If he develops, he's a middle of the order bat... as a catcher that's pretty big.

    based on the write up, I'd disagree on the high ceiling part. I think this is more of a high risk high reward type pick.

    My take. I'm not sure why they are playing the slot game (if that's what's going on). Seems that a lot of teams are doing this, and they won't have the bonus pool to compete. That said, I think it's wise not to draft college pitchers. They don't need pitchers quick to the show at this point as they have a ton in the high minors. HS pitchers make a lot more sense given less mileage on their arms and the upside that comes with.

    I'm not going to pretend to know which catchers are better than others. I've only read scouting reports. They needed catching badly, and if this guy has a chance at being in the majors 2-3 years from now, then this is a good pick.

    If people knew Trout would be Trout, he'd have gone 1 overall. No one knew he was generational talent when he was drafted. He was a toolsy OF.

    Once you get to pick 20, I really doubt there's a clear BPA. I think the target (for pick 1) should be a HS pitcher. For the next pick, I'm hoping one of the best remaining picks is a college or HS catcher (preferably college).

    I think you're a tad low on Littell. I think he and Gonsalves have very similar ceilings for what that's worth. The team will likely want to see both this year and Littell lined up perfectly.

    I'm trying to figure out how a guy with a .44 WHIP managed to give up 2 earned runs. 7 baserunners in 16 innings and 2 managed to cross the plate. Is he susceptible to the long ball?

    probably related to the clause in the CBA preventing them from playing so many days in a row without an off day.

    They could have... and they didn't. I don't think there's a need to really do much adjusting. They have guys in Littell, Gonsalves, and Slegers that are all fairly close to or ready for the show. This is a perfect chance to get one of them a look (to be fair, they've already given Slegers a look) and Littell lined up. I don't think it's much more than that. I fully expect to see Gonsalves pitching up here at some point. Given all the weather issues we had, there's going to be a few more 26th man opportunities in the not so distant future. I also think you'll see more of Slegers.

    I'm not sure what the consternation here is. Littell happens to line up with the start and this is literally a 1 start and then get sent back down type deal. May as well get a look at him. This would have been Gonsalves if his start had lined up with this game.

    What I find amusing about these threads will be the TD reaction after Wade gets promoted to MLB... There will without question be something saying DFA him the moment he has a cold streak. Let's take context here. Both Granite and Wade have spent time on the DL this season, and as noted, that makes it difficult to promote (side note, I do think Wade should get the call to AAA in the not so distant future). The other problem is that we've had a couple decent seasons out of Grossman, of which were very good for a 4th OF, and I can certainly see the FO's desire to see if he can figure it out. You don't jettison major leaguers because of a bad slump, especially when there's no guarantee their replacement will be any better. I don't get the fascination with Granite. He's basically a singles hitter. That's not bad as an occasional sub batting 9th, but not a starting OF in MLB. He's a defensive sub, and should have a decent career as such. But I don't see Granite fixing much of anything... not long term at least. I'd probably role with Cave for the time being at CF.

    I wanted to make a similar point, though to be fair to Thrylos, he quoted starting pitching. Hughes is gone. And I'd argue that Lynn probably gets a mulligan for April at least. If you factor that in, those numbers are a bit better. Context matters. I'll say this, looking at 2019, the rotation of Berrios, Romero, Gibson (hopefully he's figured it out), Odorizzi and Pineda looks pretty good, especially with reinforcements of May, Gonsalves, Littell, and Slegers. The hitting on the other hand... We have to fix Buxton and Sano (though to be fair, Sano has looked better of late).

    and the main point is that this is a rare thing, across MLB. The other problem is that the current FO is being criticized for doing what the previous FO did. I don't think the old FO was terribly slow in promoting (just look at guys like Buxton, Sano, Polanco, Rosario, Arcia, and Berrios), but the new FO is without question moving guys quicker. Kind of unfair to judge them on this when they haven't had the time to accumulate enough data points to build said narrative.

    I think someone takes him, but I think he's in senior sign territory as well. He's going to have to earn his way to the majors.
