  1. Oddly it's possible both are correct. Since it seems that Plouffe is not going to be traded, for the time being at least, that left an OF to trade for a catcher. Whether the value was fair is open to discussion. But catchers are harder to find than OF, so looking for a tit for tat trade might be overly hopeful. To address #2, Ryan seems to put an inordinate amount of weight on personality and attitude when making roster decisions. He is loathe to trade a trusted veteran who makes no waves, but has often jettisoned far more gifted players who do not fit what many sarcastically refer to as "The Twins Way". Ryan is lauded by some for his patience in "developing" players such as Plouffe and Dozier. But that patience was notably absent with Gomez, Hardy, Garza, and others.
  2. Please do not tell me that we would sign another OF! We have lots of them already. If the Twins decide to start Buxton and Kepler in Rochester for service time, fine. But that is not a reason to acquire another OF. If that's the case, let Santana and Arcia play. Who knows, one of them might end up like a Dozier or Plouffe. Had to play despite production, figured it out, and became acceptable MLB players.
  3. Your leverage in a Plouffe trade is lost once you sign Park. That said, I think no team will see the Twins as desperate to unload Plouffe in any case.
  4. I do hope we did not trade Hicks for a platoon level catcher! But it would fit the Ryan risk adverse model. Mid level deals, mid level risks, mid level success, mid level failures, and needless to say, mid level in the AL!
  5. I cannot see anyway Kepler starts here in spring, and in today's Trib Rob Anthony already alluded to Buxton possibly starting in Rochester when he said the Twins had options in CF like Danny Santana. I would not be at all stunned to see an OF of Rosario, DanSan, and Sano. Starting Buxton in Rochester for service time I can understand, but I simply do not get the Sano thing at all. Athletic, sure. But to expect him to learn the OF in spring? Maybe there's a secret plan to bring Arcia back?
  6. Ugh! Two of the worst defensive catchers, and definitely the worst two arms, platooning! It's enough to make me change my screen name!
  7. I don't know what the Twins roster will look like when the smoke all clears. Ryan is quoted as saying he is not trading Plouffe, not getting rid of players, only adding, and starts out the odd season adding another 30 year old "lottery ticket". If he does not trade Plouffe, can't trade Mauer, and was clear he wanted Hunter to return, that seems the dealings of a GM who thinks he has a veteran team, missing just a couple pieces. They are not the doings of a GM with a loaded minor league system which should be coming to fruition. If you aren't going to trade a Plouffe or Dozier, that leaves only one area with which to improve the catching depth. Trading a pretty good young player or two. And unless he can get a really talented starting young catcher in return, it doesn't make sense. Maybe he will surprise, but so far his initial actions and comments to the media are more indicative of a man looking to make a splash quickly before he re-retires, than a man building for the long haul?
  8. Sano is way quicker, and faster than Willy, Cuddy, or Ploofy! And his arm easily plays well in the OF. Can he catch fly balls? I can, so I imagine he can. Will his pitchers end up crouching down and holding their head in their hands after a ball lands that Hicks, Buxton, Rosario, and yes even Hunter would have caught? Very likely. What I dread is him coming in and diving for a ball, and seeing him holding his shoulder. Big guys like him do not land like cats!
  9. The failings of Arcia, Vargas and Santana? Over one season at their age?? First of all, that is not the definition of the word patience. And secondly you might as well include another Santana, Johan and some big guy in Boston as examples of players who were not necessarily out of the gate success stories. What's TR going to do if Buxton comes up in June, and does his usual "I need 3-4 weeks to get going in a new league" thingy?
  10. I learned several things by watching the Park HR video. 99 meters is 324' and 118 meters is 379'. Those were numbers I saw on the fence down the LF line and in CF. those are not big parks. Dozier would love that LF measurement. The other thing I picked up was how to yell "touch em all Park" in Korean!
  11. Why was he stung? Almost no player comes up and is an instant success. For those few, the dreaded sophomore jinx awaits. The practical fact is it takes into the third year, well over 1000 AB's to be what you're gonna be. That's why I refer to Plouffe, Dozier, and more recently Hicks as examples. With them the Twins had no options so they had to stick with them. And they leveled off. AS grade? Not really, but very capable. I like Sano and Buxton. But I figure the growing pains next year will be painful. And with the exception of service time, Buxtons future is not going to be helped playing in northern NY.
  12. With the Park deal, somebody's gotta move somewhere! You can't put two ton of corner IF in a one ton infield!
  13. If I read the articles correctly Park whiffs at a 25% rate. Where will that number go facing ML pitching. When analyzing this, remember he doesn't get to bat off Twins pitching!
  14. So if Park is signed, and Plouffe isn't traded, Sano has to play OF. Period. That could be exciting? Or they could start Sano in Rochester for OF experience, but then they couldn't answer the phones at One Twins Way. This whole deal could have made sense if they had an opening at 1B. Or the ability to make an opening at 1B. But they don't. There are so many things the Twins needed, but a 1B/DH wasn't on the list. If I was Hicks or Rosario I would not take out any long term apartment leases. If he trades Kepler, well then it's time to wonder what the long term plan really is?
  15. He was also clear in one article that Sano can catch routine fly balls! As can I. But had trouble approaching the fence, routes, and other minor intricacies of the OF. This team spent several years bemoaning Arcias defense, regardless of whether he was hitting or not. And this is their next move? I don't know if the Twins are playing poker here, or not. But it certainly appears that it's yet another case of Ryan not being able to part ways with a veteran favorite.
  16. Per Bernadino: http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2015/11/06/twinsights-behold-the-miguel-sano-experiment-in-left-field/ I find the whole idea maddening and predictable all at once. The maddening part is self explanatory. The predictable part is the Twins just now getting him reps in the OF in an attempt to hedge the supposedly soft market for Plouffe because he is arbitration eligible, and has only one year of control left. Silly me, I thought those numbers were all spelled out in the players agreements?
  17. The Twins need to make room in two places, OF and corner IF. What originally did, and still does get Arcia in trouble is his defense. He'll hit. Moving Sano to the OF is likely Arcia 2. Trade Plouffe. I have said this from day one! If Sano is not an upgrade on Plouffe by the middle of 2017, then the Twins, the scouts, and the bloggers all were wrong on him. Even with a Plouffe trade, you still have too many OF'ers. Why add another one!
  18. I totally agree! I would have been too sheepish to even consider posting this thread.
  19. You forgot the inevitable result of all of the above! The parade down Hennepin Avenue in November!
  20. It's a sad commentary that "getting the band back together" is so etched into the Twins DNA, that there has to be a thread based on the topic. This team does NOT need another old catcher who can't throw, an old relief pitcher off surgery, a 37 yr old who hasn't pitched in 3 yrs, or a DH with two HR's last year. And we do not need another veteran OF to either slow or block the young OF excess we already have. ENOUGH ALREADY!
  21. Ryan's professed love of innings pitched every five days all season has merit. The problem is that it is the criteria for the 3-5 spots in the rotation, not the #1. That guy has to be the guy that will be a stopper, any day, home and away, against any team. Needless to say that also equates to innings pitched per year, etc, therfore Ryan is partially correct in his definition. But, his definition seems to substitute the word "most". That omission also fits nicely with the Twins Way, buy in the middle, trade in the middle, and sell in the middle. This guarantees your mistakes will be nominal. Sadly it also guarantees your successes will be the same. I used to think the teams lack of spending was strictly based on not wanting to spend money. Lately I have come to believe it's more Ryan's vision of successful management.
  22. I still think that alone advocating keeping Dozier for his power, has a questionable argument. He is never going to see enough up and in mistakes to replicate his first half numbers. I was surprised he did the first half of this year, but they either didn't listen, or didn't execute. In the second half they made it a mission to stay below the belt.
  23. To address Seths recent post, I excluded Santana and Liriano because they were not draftes. I could entertain the Santana argument, as he was an ace, but still not a draftee. Liriano was an ace, for 3 months, and got hurt. And when he returned the Twins did not have the patience, or the ability to get him back to that status. Nor apparently did the Sox. And while he has had success in Pittsburgh, is it ace like?
  24. There are only two ways to end up with an "ace". Acquire one or develop one. So does Ryan's definition of the term ace, go towards answering the question of how a team like the Mets can have 4 young 95 plus studs, and we struggle to get someone that tops out at 93? While velocity isn't everything, it does tend to make mistakes in the zone less damaging. And the fact that a team targets that style indicates a very different philosophy. Could Blyleven be the last home grown product with actual league wide ace material? And if so, why? It can't be all bad luck? Or can it?
