  1. I would be willing to bet that by the time that they are through, the best numbers of the quartet of Park, Vargas, Arica, and ABW will not be in the Park column. Which one? Not sure, my bet would still be Arcia. Of course the biggest difference is three are here, one is out of options, and there's a chance they now lose him, and two are in control. The other one is a flyer who put numbers up in what appears to be low grade MiLB.
  2. No, it carries into .the owners pockets. Which is fine, it's their team. But since we aren't quite at the luxury tax level, I don't think there is another reason for not spending it?
  3. Didn't this happen in the past with a Japanese bid situation, some team trying to keep another team from getting a player? I don't think the Twins did this, I just don't think the Twins ever really expected to win the bid. If we truly aren't going to trade Plouffe, we needed another DH type, like I needed to write another post on this topic!
  4. You are right about absolutes! My bad. But as to Sano, if I remember correctly from news reports and from the Sano documentary, concerns about the validity of his age was a factor in many teams dropping out on him, leaving I think Pittsburgh and the Twins. So yes we won a bid, but there were definitely mitigating factors. And of course we came in first in the Ricky Nolasco sweepstakes!
  5. I doubt anyone sat down and conspired this deeply to pull of the ploy to constrain Park from others, but I do think it has been done. But remember there was no risk whatsoever for anyone to win the bid, it was refundable. Since the Twins never outbid anyone for almost anything, it's strange they won this one? In regards to posts about Ryan's proactivity, or lack thereof, I don't think anyone can truly say he is aggressive. Please don't confuse aggressive with careless. My measure is that many of his roster moves in season are done as the result of injury, not a desire to change the talent structure. And in this off season they had glaring excesses, and glaring needs. One has been modestly addressed, the others remain wait and see. I looked in the Webster! Wait and see was not in the definition of "aggressive"
  6. That's all well and good, but what if they tie for the division lead? Game 163? Who wins?
  7. I agree wholeheartedly with everything but this. Their is a difference between the rosters and the starters. Plouffe is the only one who can reasonably solve the roster issue. Mauer cannot be traded. He can be cut, but that's not a reality worthy of discussion. You can reduce his AB's. But not his roster spot. Something often ignored is that the Twins lineup was so putrid last year that as much as I do not believe Mauer is a 3 hitter, I could not come up with another. Dozier? Plouffe? Sano? The HR were there, but for two of them only half the year. Sano might soon be though. But Dozier remains an all or nothing hitter, and truthfully despite Plouffes HR's, does anyone think he strikes fear in any pitcher? The DP's and SO's are too easily coerced.
  8. It will be interesting to see how he holds up physically if he ends up in the pen, which I am sure he will. Last year he had a few issues, which he claimed were pen related. But the real issue here isn't whether he belongs in the pen, or whether the Twins signed to many veteran starters. (They did). The issue is their refusal to deal with this roster crunch in a way that makes the team more competitive. And the continuing cow towing to veterans in roster decisions. See Pelfrey! May will be an improvement in the pen, but only at the expense of watching "The Usual Suspects" pitch.
  9. The problem is the Twins don't let them be 4th OF. They play them too many innings, and the minute a young OF would struggle, boom that veteran 4th OF is your left fielder!
  10. His point on matching sub standard defensive OF over the years with low SO pitchers is maybe the key point in the whole article. It's not as sexy as arguing about specific moves, or players, but it likely is the most relevant point, as it determines more wins/losses than does one player.
  11. Or maybe he couldn't decide which Dozier to analyze? First half BD, or second half BD?
  12. Sorry, but either you're going to roll with Kepler, Duffy, May, Berrios, Sano at 3B, Buxton and the rest (in which case I understand patience) or you need to be aggressive. This middle ground is indefensible. Exactly. I too will accept a learning curve for these guys. But I won't accept a waiting curve, dragging out more or less the same guys who haven't won a thing, while our prized rookies perfect MiLB. For example, Tonkin? Was he Wade Davis? Not hardly. But he wasn't the worst RP on last years staff. But they kept dragging out the chaff to pitch, and kept looking for reasons to send him down.
  13. Well I have always been well know for my consistency! :)
  14. I missed something? First, someone has to actually play a non Suzuki, he was far from Johnny Bench last year, and no options were pursued. RF and DH? Sano will likely hit somewhere between his hot start, and his cool ending. He and Park (if Park sticks) will go toe to toe for the AL SO crown. And as much as I disliked Hunter's defense in RF, I doubt Sano will improve that. CF? Even if Buxton has a Hicks like spring, he is probably headed to Rochester. I also like Pressley if he's not hurt. And most of the rest listed, were not up last year. The two that were left Rochester with round trip tickets. The FO obviously loves hard throwing RP, they just don't play them!
  15. It's too early for popcorn, I think a nice scone, and some coffee will work for me. And I predict about 6 pages from now, we won't have resolved the issues Brian alluded to. But he is pretty much spot on. This is a site where metrics are much appreciated. I think most metrics show the Twins over performing, and Cleveland and the Sox under performing last year. But I doubt that's going to continue. I also doubt the Twins will go on beating Chris Sale like a drum. But as to "keeping up", we have a ways to go. At the very best our rotation is static, Santana for May. Our bull pen is? Well I guess we wait on that, I think there's still some 32 yr old 90 mph RP unsigned, and our primary offensive change is an expensive lottery ticket. And one which is going to at a minimum make our OF defense "interesting". We probably improved the catching position somewhat, but this ain't Joe Mauer we are putting back there. To date there is no real visible reason to look for a better record than last year, and if just one Central team plays us tougher, that might be optimistic.
  16. I noticed you are new here? So it is understandable that you do not understand that this is a serious site, and sarcasm is highly frowned upon!
  17. Their dad was one of my favorite Gophers. That was a great team. Too bad he tried to pick up some beer money selling his tickets. I was appalled, appalled mind you, that anyone would sully the amateur status of college athletics! Did I mention I was appalled?
  18. I truly hate seeing May go the the pen, but at the same time, given the current roster, it's likely the thing to do. Time will tell. It helps clear the jam in the beginning of the year. Of course so would have moving Pefrey there last year. I don't think Milone fits the pen, except for mop up. His stuff doesn't play well there. At the same time, he, more than anyone on the staff pitches at the whim of an umpire. He needs a big outside corner, and when it doesn't exist, he doesn't last long.
  19. The Pohlads almost certainly hold Ryan accountable. And they likely have a set of criteria they use to analyze his performance. The question is where does wins/losses sit on that list. If Ryan is judged on the P/L then I would imagine he is quite well regarded. Many of his moves are of the low risk, low reward type. Most banks live on that philosophy. Keeping seats in the seats is the priority. The Hunter deal was like that. To us the 10M seemed excessive, to them it was the cost of selling tickets to a dissatisfied customer base after four really bad years, and a new stadium bloom that had worn off. Instant excitement before a pitch was thrown. It did nothing for the future of the franchise, but sold tickets. I believe TR firs perfectly into the Pohlads corporate structure. He could run a bank, auto dealership, or the baseball team with the same reliable efficiency. And I don't think after 20 years of either being the guy, or hovering over the guy, anything is going to change in operating theory. If they become a consistent winner it will be in spite of Ryan, not because of Ryan.
  20. I agree totally, and add that staying where we were last year, will not make up the difference needed to be a legitimate contender. This is not a knock on Plouffe, it's a realization that if we can't go forward from last year, then we are going to be mired in mediocrity yet again! Would these moves be an absolute? No! But the alternative is!
  21. If my wife was a baseball fan she would say "FINE"!
  22. I have always heard the accepted PR % should be in the 51% range. So they are in the ballpark! Pun intended. I don't mind that they don't spend the kind of money Price got. But I think they are slow to react to roster issues, have a tendency to play favorites with veterans, and in general distrust youth. I don't know how this years roster will end up looking, but at the current time, it doesn't appear any serious effort is being made to turn it into a cohesive unit.
  23. I think unless Nolasco is a complete washout in ST, he will get far more innings than we expect. The Twins, and likely other teams, use the cost of the player in allocating playing time. And he cost plenty. I would also believe the FO would like to salvage just a little of the pride lost in this contract. As an aside, I still have a problem with the use of the term "depth" in referring to the pitching situation in MN. While I understand that depth can be synonymous with quantity, in this case I hope it's not being used to infer quality.
  24. Now I know why Ryan has no time to clear roster problems, he's hiring people to sing the National Anthem and God Bless America in Rochester!
  25. Should have read: Lather, rinse, repeat, apologetic interview with sympathetic media member bemoaning the serious effort, lack of success, and fortuity of still finding capable arm! (Whoops, forgot the requisite, "The Pohlads have assured me, that money is not an issue")
