  1. The only problem left with a BIG MOVE is that it likely includes a trade of a prospect, sine Plouffe is off the table! While I doubt that will happen, if it does, I fear it would not be anything I would like!
  2. Quite possibly the most sensible, simplest, and clearest analysis of the entire Sano, Plouffe issue.
  3. I like Sano, and I think Arcia needs a chance to recover. I also am ok with an offensive OF, but even for me, these two in the OF together is hard to envision. And impossible without Buxton between them. The only problem with the Twins signing a veteran 4th OF is they will play him in front of the youth. When you look at this roster, it's obvious what keeping Plouffe does. If Arcia had more trade value, even that would help, but he doesn't. And I still think that would end up as an Ortiz2. Sooner or later they have to do something. Following the usual plan of waiting for someone to get hurt, so you can send him to rehab, is not a plan!
  4. I wish he would replace Mitch Leidner!
  5. I don't know if Sano can play OF, my guess is if he can it's going to be a long and painful experience. Plouffe has proven he can't, and I would imagine he loses a foot race to Mauer to boot. Mauer on the other hand is likely the best pure athlete of the three, albeit older. He was the number one QB in his class, he could have played D1 BB, and he was the best catcher in baseball, and likely could have pitched. I don't think who would be the better OF of the three is in dispute. An argument can be made for any alignment, and they will all have merit, and they will all have issues. I don't know how other teams do it, but I do think if the Twins continue to allow seniority, players sentiments, and personality issues to control their roster decisions, they are not going to get a result equal to the talent available in the orginisation. MLB is not high school ball, you don't have to worry about what someone's mom thinks!
  6. I can more or less agree with this, with these two exceptions. Ryan seems very slow to adjust to change, and there are non financial moves he makes and doesn't make that are consistent and puzzling. Mainly his distrust of younger players, and his over blown affection for safe middling vets.
  7. When we got married, we decided I would make all big decisions, and she would make all the little ones! It's been quite a few years, and it's hard to believe, but there still has not been a big decision to make! Speaking of little decisions, I just don't like the Sano to RF one. You can be that big, and have quick hands and quick feet, and get by at third. But to make athletic moves chasing sinking fly balls, and heaven forbid bouncing into an OF wall. At that size? I just am not sure that's gonna end well? What if he runs into the RF wall, and that idiotic flower pot overhead comes down?
  8. I am not as concerned with what we didn't do, as with what we might. I would have rather seen cash spent, for a shut down RP, adding instead of subtracting, than trade a good prospect. If I wake up and find a Rosario, Polanco, Kepler, or a high velocity reliever gone for two years of another control type RP I will flip. But I don't think we should be surprised. Keeping Fien sort of set the bar. And letting Jones go was more evidence that they talk velocity, but have yet to actually practice it. With strike outs come walks. That doesn't go over well in Twins Territory!
  9. We semi agree, I am al for prioritizing players. As in straightening out the SP first off. Followed by the BP. There has not been a visible movement in any direction. Unless you call Sano in the OF movement? Addressing the catching situation was good, replacing Hicks with Sano is not. The Park move is odd, on a team with too many DH style guys as is. But as one exec bluntly said to a beat writer, "is it Openimg Day"? So there's time. Btw, to me win now management refers to a team that is just a light tweak away from contending. Regardless of being 3 games out of the second WC, I don't see this team as a slight tweak away from anything of significance as of this posting.
  10. I don't have a problem with them spending money, on a good FA, they have plenty. But I want them to take into consideration the long term effects it has on the roster. Does it block a good internal candidate? Is it just a move that is "safer" vs potential upside. As to your point on Ryan's hand being forced, I would be curious to know the percentage of roster moves mad in season that are injury related, vs talent related. My bet is its higher than one would imagine.
  11. . Should the Twins be in a "win now" mode? Or should they be in a "refine now" mode, laying the ground work for mid 2016 forward? They have not dealt at all with their mediocre over stuffed SP, their low SO BP, and are facing starting the year with a completely unproven right fielder, possibly a fill in CF, and a DH who has never swung a bat in the majors. That does not a "win now" situation make. They still can, and they might, but so far it's not the off season of a team in win now mode!
  12. Your quick math was too quick and maybe too simple. The 40th man on some rosters might be worse than even the 36 that were picked up ahead of Jones. Therefore we will have to do an entire analysis of all 895 players that are theoretically above Jones! Since this is a monumentous task, I think it best to break it into smaller pieces! I will start. Mauer > Jones! Who's next. If everyone chips in, my quick math says we can add about 45 more pages to this meaningful exercise in futility!
  13. I had to check the date on this, I assumed this referred to a different year!
  14. Didn't you mean "an older mans" ............. Only us elders can remember first hand the exploits of Lil Nicky, the youth have to rely on ESPN Classic! The daring headfirst slides into first base, the the the, oh well you know what I mean!
  15. If you have a Nolasco type player with that contract, it's a fixed cost. The money is already spent. And you likely got no return. If you cut him, or trade him for even orginisational depth, and bring in a younger talent, in this case a Berrios, it will cost you about another 1.2M for two years. Money you will surely recoup in ticket sales, and possibly in wins. This applies to position players as well. The money should not be an issue if you are in the business to be competitive. It's the roster spot. On the other hand, if your criteria is the P&L, that's a different decision making process altogether!
  16. Last I heard Milton Bradley had a successful company making board games. I heard he used Albert Belle as his inspiration for Twister? Besides, if you are ove 40, you have to be a former Twin, and a mentor to be offered a contract.
  17. You quote includes three points. And all are true, and have been for quite a few years, despite the roster position in question. While the current problem appears to lie in the construction of an efficient BP, your post touches on the real problem.
  18. Good piece. You put my thoughts into a more coherent post than I can. I think the big difference between now and in 2010 is that the Twins have too many corner IF-DH guys. In the Nishy situation they had one too many middle IF, and that was Hardy, and they dumped him. Leaving them with no options when Nishy was injured. In a way OTC was correct, it's Hot Stove time, and it's fun. But for this to turn out in a manner that makes sense to any semi knowledgeable observer, TR has going to have to makes some moves he isn't known for, such as eating contracts, trading a stable veteran, and possibly more youth in the BP. One thing is for sure though! No matter what happens, everyone here on TD will be very supportive!
  19. He could be, but so far has shown no more inclination to adjust than several players who ended up riding buses all summer. Dozier does bring more to the game than just hitting, so I don't think he needed to ride a Greyhound all summer. That said, anyone thinking that he can both increase his average, go the other way, cut down on SO, AND still hit HR in the 20's is mistaken. He is not a natural power hitter. His power was from jumping up and in stuff and pulling it into a very small window in LF. In the words of some old guy who posts here from a warmer clime: Doziers problem is he thinks he's a HR hitter, and he's not!
  20. I can't argue! Nothing is ever pre cast in stone in life. Perhaps "likely" would have been preferable to automatic.
  21. KC won't get that terrible, that quickly and they weren't a fluke. They are soundly construct d, with a plan. That puts us an automatic second. I think Cleveland still has pitching, and underperformed. And Chicago had more talent than wins. By almost anyone's analysis we over performed. We still, as of this writing, have not resolved any pitching issues, only have questions. We will lose games while Park learns ML pitching. (If he does), and while we teach Sano to play OF, if he can. CF is a crapshoot. I would start Buxton there and suffer through the learning curve, you have to do it sooner or later. But they might acquire a fill in CF, and start Buzton in AAA, and delay that process costing more wins? As currently constructed, this is not a finally tuned machine! I think 3rd, no playoffs. I realize a lot of teams have questions, but for a team with a supposedly fixed lineup, except for CF, this team has a lot of questions!
  22. Sano can run for a big guy, very well. And he can throw. It just seems a really odd idea, to take a guy and try and teach him to play OF in the majors. Especially since they have options. They have tried it with Santana and Escobar, far more athletic players, with not too much success. I do know one thing, if they put him out there, he's going to have to stay there. Trading Plouffe, or a Park blowup will be the only thing that moves him.
  23. I had a guy used to work for me. Great guy, a good German. The more beer he drank, the further the hat would rotate! When it got to about 90 degrees he was unfit to drive, when it went all the way to 180" we took him home!
  24. Looking at Rodney, kept Fien, wanted Hunter back, signed a make or break DH, claims to be keeping Plouffe, and moving Sano to the OF. Has actually not made a "look to the future" trade so far. The actions of a GM on his way to retirement? Interesting...... As to Rodney? Aw Cmon.
