  1. Well, we knew that Deduno would be back up but it's not like he's killing AAA hitters. I think, considering his age, the Twins really should've promoted Gibson instead of Deduno. He's certainly the better pitcher. I think moves like this can poison the well between a team and a player. I suppose in the long run it doesn't matter much.
  2. Dang. Is Deduno on the 40 man roster or does a move have to be made?
  3. I doubt this happens but the Astros GM and owner went out to see Colin Moran this weekend. AL West Notes: Profar, Astros, Mariners: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com The move would make some sense, Moran is pretty young even for a college guy, and it would presumably free up a lot of money for later picks if they went the same route as last year. Moran apparently doesn't have Bryant's power but he's an on base machine. He has 52 walks to only 18 strike outs. That said, I don't know if they could pass on a top pitcher like Appel or Gray but I guess it's good to know they are at least considering it.
  4. I know you're trying to be cute but things like that drive me nuts. The Twins have had 9 sandwich picks since 04 and spent one on a college reliever (Bard). They spent 3 on HS starters, 3 on college starters and 2 on power bats.
  5. Honest question. Would you rather Sano made it to the majors for good a year earlier but was forced to be a RF or would you rather he made it as a 3B, even if it meant waiting a year? I don't know if there's a wrong answer but I'd prefer the Twins try and make it work for him at third b/c we have a lot of guys who can hit well and take a corner OF spot. But we haven't had a quality offensive and defensive 3B since Koskie. The answer might be different if you've already decided that he can't play third but for this question, assume with an extra year of work, he could.
  6. Meh. This thread has so many strawmen it wasn't worth going through it all over again. Just sum up all the basic arguments and go. My apologies for the birther comment. I'll edit it out.
  7. There has been a study, sorry I don't have a link for it, and it showed that the Twins were pretty much the slowest when it came to minor leaguers. The problem with the study is that it weighed each player the same so Trevor Plouffe spent 8 seasons in the minors it skewed the Twins list older. Other orgs might have given up on a guy like Plouffe or Watkins etc. The Twins have promoted people fast - Mauer, Arcia, Garza, Gibson (before his injury). And they've had guys wait until they were 25 or older to settle in - Koskie, Plouffe, Blackburn. I don't think it's as big a problem as others apparently do. We haven't had many top prospects but most of them - Mauer, Liriano, Garza, Kubel were on fast tracks.
  8. Probably the scouts. There was a reason he was considered such a great prospect by pretty much everyone in baseball.
  9. Interesting. He could do a Appel and not sign this year. Or some team in the 15-20ish range could all of a sudden get some real value at their spot in the draft.
  10. I agree with most of this although I think the Twins actually have some solid power prospects. Sano, obviously, is the #1 power prospect in baseball right now but Walker and Harrison both have some real pop, too. Arcia, is, at least for a few more weeks, a prospect and he has nice power. And even guys like Rosario and Goodrum look to have some pop for a MIer. Right now I'd be ok (assuming the first three is Gray, Appel and Bryant) with either Stewart or Shipley.
  11. Yeah, I'd imagine he'd get ranked somewhere in the 50 range of BA's prospect rankings. Those two debuted in the mid 20s, I believe.
  12. Hey, it's another fire Gardy thread!
  13. One possible way. Houston goes underslot and takes someone like Stewart (who makes some sense. Risky guy but young and grows with Correa and they save money) b/c Gray has a few bad outings going into the draft. Cubs take Appel and Rockies remain in love with Bryant. Leaving the Twins with Gray. Not likely but a possible way, outside of injury.
  14. A #2 would be two plus pitches and an average third one. Here's a decent link to what scouts mean by #1, 2 etc: Defining 1-2-3-4-5 Starters - Minor League Ball. It's based on scouting, not nec results. Other websites - baseball prospectus for instance - have similar definitions, if you can find the articles. It's not perfect but it's a decent start.
  15. Thanks for posting that, cmb. Going off the old grading system at minor league ball, Mayo sees Shipley as a solid #3 type while Law thinks he could be a #2. But, and this is probably the most important to me, both think he has enough pitches to remain a starter. I'm a bit surprised to see all those 40s and 50s for all those guys. I thought some of them had questions about whether or not they had a 3rd pitch to make it as a starter (Stanek).
  16. I think Shipley could be a dark horse pick for us at #4 (assuming Gray, Appel and Bryant are off the board). He meets a lot of the criteria the Twins like - good control, good change up, good fastball. Not a Boras guy. College arm. I wouldn't be surprised if it came down to him and the HS arm in Stewart.
  17. I actually think Hernandez would be great as the LOOGY/inning eating last arm in the pen type guy.
  18. Also, please let me (not John) win the lottery.** **Not to be read as making fun of religion or others beliefs in any way.
  19. I think they are being unfair to Gibson. He's done everything they asked, including waiting 3 months to have TJ surgery. He's already 25 so a lot of his ML earnings power is already gone. Even if they brought him up now, he won't be a free agent until after his age 31 season so he might get one shot at a free agency lotto. Considering he's easily one of our 5 best starters and the team doesn't have major payroll commitments going forward, I think the Twins owe it to him and the fans to bring him up now, esp since they plan on only having him make 14 or so more starts this year. As for Hicks and Arcia, I think the Twins have been fair to both and both could do well with some seasoning in AAA so if they decide to do that (and maybe give Benson a shot to grab a 4th OFer position), I'd be ok with that.
  20. Except this rotation lacks a Santana, Radke and Bonser.
  21. It's great to read this kind of stuff about our prospects. Now if Gray/Appel could somehow fall to us in the draft ....
  22. I understand what you are saying, I really do. And I agree that a future rotation of Gausman, Gibson and Meyer would be a crap load of fun. But I do think a team should draft BPA - whoever/however they decide that. Need should be a tie breaker. In this draft, I expect we draft Stewert. Rockies seem to be in love with Bryant so he won't slip to #4. And yes, Buxton was clearly the BPA in last years draft. That was the nearly consensus opinion of prospect watchers. And while Gausman is killing it at AA, Buxton's even better at his level. He's 19 and the best player in low A. He'll be a top 5 prospect in baseball next year. He was worth it.
  23. I know you don't like it but best player available is the right method. That said, in this draft I think Bryant is the only bat that the Twins might have in their top 6 (Gray, Appel, Bryant, Stewart, Shipley, Manaea) so it's very likely you get your pitcher.
  24. If they keep him down for a few more weeks they can keep him from reaching FA the same year as (apparently) Hicks and Arcia. I think this is BS, he's 25 and he's earned his promotion but the Twins FO has said they want to stagger promotions so not everyone is arbitration eligible and a free agent at the same time. I'm also not sure how the plans to shut him down after 130 innings will affect his service time.
