  1. Oscar Travares. Uber Cardinals center fielder prospect. 21 year old beating up on AAA pitching.
  2. God, I wish they'd just promote him already.
  3. That's awesome. I love Sano but I'm so happy we have Buxton. Klaw just reorganized his prospects and put him #2 overall. Yesterday he wrote that if Buxton turns into a 7-8 WAR player, the Astros will always be reminded of that. And Kepler hasn't even played yet.
  4. I'm sorry I can't find the link but I just read something that said the Twins looked like they'd be the most aggressive team in the intl market this year. I thought it was on baseball america but I can't find it .... sorry. Anyhow, the Twins have made a few nice signings since Sano - Felix Jorge and Mineras (sp) last year. They've been linked to all the big guys already so it should be a fun signing period for us.
  5. Twinkie Town (and Pirates version Bucs Dugout) were pretty vocal about it. Pirate fans were absolutely crushed. The ESPN boards, back when they were good, had some stuff on it too. I never posted at BYTO.
  6. Always go BPA available, which I think is Stewart (although Shipley is growing on me). However, if they somehow managed to get McGuire and then they knew that they could get Manaea at 43 and he'd sign, I'd be pretty tempted to do that. But I don't think that would happen and I don't want to lose BPA hoping that it drops that way.
  7. I don't think they'd do it until the break but he could be a quick riser. Most scouts mention that he's physically mature so there isn't that reason to hold him back. If he continues to dominate like this, he could move up to A+. I suspect this thread will soon devolve into a discussion of whether the Twins would ever rush a prospect though.
  8. A's tried it for a few weeks under LaRussa back in the day. Blew up pretty good.
  9. I want this to be true but it is tough to believe. However, Moran isn't a slouch. He's an on base machine - he's walking about 4x as often as he's striking out. He should have gap power if not HR power.
  10. They also signed Wilson Ramos and Jose Morales, a 3rd rd pick, looked like he could be a solid player until his injury. And Morneau was originally drafted as a catcher and a few others as well, I suppose. But yeah, I hope our 1st pick isn't a catcher.
  11. Wow. I guess its just a hypothetical but if they really happened, I'd be pretty angry.
  12. Insider needed: Houston Astros take Colin Moran over Mark Appel in second mock draft of 2013 - MLB Draft - ESPN Figured it was good enough news to get it's own thread. One way it makes sense for the Astros could be if they think Manaea could slide into the 2nd round where they could give him 3.5m fairly easily.
  13. I like Mauer batting second but I wonder if Mauer was getting upset himself with his lack of RBIs. Players like those things even if we don't think they matter. Lineup construction doesn't really matter and maybe certain players feel better hitting 4th rather than 3rd or 3rd rather than 2nd. I do think a bad hitter with pop can surprise a pitcher if he's batting low in the order (think Craig Monroe for the Tigers in 06) and I think there is some studies that suggest a guy with some pop at #8 (in the AL) is a good idea but I have no idea where that link would be now.
  14. I'm curious about that, too. He's hitting .353/.353/.824 with 2 HR when he puts the first pitch into play. So I think he has made some adjustments and started to get a little more aggressive in early counts. But it's way too early to conclude that. Still, he's a fun to watch and his power looks legit.
  15. This is pretty much how I feel. I might come around to Shipley, a Zimmer like guy who might be a #2 but I really don't want a non-pitcher. Big hope would be that the Astros take Moran and let one of the big 3 fall to us but if that doesn't happen, Stewert isn't a bad consolation prize.
  16. Not sure, my guess is they are ok with the trade since he's probably better than he's played but you're right, he's not having a great year.
  17. Yeah, I think you make a good point here. I'm not sure if all-star games are really that important since it's not always the best pitchers. But the Twins have had a few pretty good pitchers but I agree they haven't really had one with sustained success since Santana and Radke left. (Radke was in the top of WAR 6x. I honestly think he qualifies). Hopefully Meyer and Gibson can both turn into solid front end types soon.
  18. I like nicksaviking take on this. I think the Pohlad's fired Smith b/c he wanted to keep a higher payroll, not b/c of his baseball moves. They are lucky, in my opinion, to have Ryan who can create a good team on a low budget but I'm going to be really pissed in a few years when the team is ready to compete again if the purse strings stay closed. We'll see.
  19. A couple 25 yr old AAA pitchers, a reliever and a 25 yr old UI with 2 ML games? I'm pretty happy with the Meyer deal. But man, was I close with my Lee idea. Instead of the #61 prospect they ended up trading for the #59. Nailed it.
  20. Thanks for posting that. I suppose the reason for that is that the elite HS arms can make a lot more money right away rather than going to school and risking their livelihood (with a few exceptions). So college arms wouldn't generally have the same ceiling.
  21. How often does one get ace caliber if that's the comps? Santana and Blyleven were both HOF talents. I'm not sure how many teams develop guys at that level and none do so with any frequency. I don't think Radke is at their level but he certainly pitched better than many other pitchers commonly referred to as "aces." Pitcher A 12 years 126-95, 3.94 era (117 ERA+), 1800+ip, 35.7 WAR (best season 6.2) Pitcher B 12 years 148-139, 4.22 era (113 ERA+), 2400+ip, 45.6 WAR (best season 6.5) Pitcher C 11 years 131-98, 4.07 era (108 ERA+), 1900+ip, 25.4 WAR (best season 6.3) Pitcher D 13 years 132-100, 3.94 era (111 ERA+), 1900+ip, 33.6 WAR (best season 6.5) Pitcher E 14 years 163-135, 3.94 era (108 ERA+), 2400+ip, 35.9 WAR (best season 7.2) Pitcher F 16 years 176-1244, 4.04 era (112 ERA+) 2400+ip, 40.6 WAR (best season 5.1) A, E and F all won a Cy Young award. 5 signed large contracts over 16m/season with large market teams. And Radke had a better career than all of them by WAR (although A is still pitching and could end up with higher career WAR).
  22. Why does it have to be either drafted or signed by free agency? Their are many ways to acquire good starting pitching, as the Twins have shown. Ignoring trades, waiver claims and rule V pick ups to then make the claim that the Twins can't create a good rotation ignores the reality of how baseball teams are made and ignores the reality that, during most of 2000s, the Twins strength was pitching behind a strong rotation and great bullpen. How those arms were acquired showed that Ryan knew how to create a rotation. He is doing those same things now. And why are we now expecting that the rotation has to be 5 guys who are sustainable for at least 3 years or longer? Starting pitchers break down all the time. A few years ago it looked like Atlanta was going to have a rotation built around Tommy Hanson and Jair Jurrjens. The two combined for 2 200ip seasons. Ryan was able to build a good rotation behind Santana (rule v) and Radke (drafted) by plugging in guys like Milton (Knoblauch trade), Mays (Roberto Kelly trade), Lohse (part of the Aguilera trade), Silva (Milton trade), Liriano (AJ trade), Boof (AJ trade), Baker (drafted), Slowey (drafted), Perkins (drafted), Garza (drafted), Blackburn (drafted), Duensing (drafted) etc. That's what he's trying to do now.
  23. Yeah, unless something wacky happens - Astros throwing a curve ball or Stewart getting hurt before the draft - I think he's the pick. I admit I don't know that much about Stewart. Does anyone know if he's considered a potentially fast moving prospect like Berrios or does he need to learn control/command and still grow into his body?
