  1. That seems to be two different issues - 1) resigning your own players and 2) trading prospects for established types. Both are worthy discussions but neither deal with the specific issue of signing free agents. Drjim makes a good point. Maybe it's not the definitive point (maybe it is) but successful teams don't normally get there through free agency. They don't take short cuts. They draft well. They make good trades. They make some smart waiver claims and/or rule v picks. They develop a core group of players together. And then they might use FA to fix the core.
  2. This statement is just not true.
  3. They went young several times in Gardy's run.
  4. I'm not sure this is a fair shot at Ryan. When he was GM in his first go-round, he was extremely hindered by payroll issues but was still able to build a couple different core teams. That's a positive for him. Payroll went up under a different GM. When he came back, it was rebuilding time (it's why they got him) so spending a lot didn't make sense. We don't know if he'll spend big in FA in a few years or keep payroll low but basing it on how he managed the team under a different financial situation doesn't make sense. And I think it's rather silly for Ryan to make a splashy move just to show some people that he might do something. If you can't see that Ryan isn't making moves to make this team better now, then signing Sanchez wouldn't do it either.
  5. Sanchez didn't cost 16m, he cost 80. If the Twins could have gotten him for one year at 16, they'd jumped on it. And for the 6.5m the Twins paid for Carroll, they got over 3 WAR from him. That's not a bad signing.
  6. I've always thought that plate discipline was the hardest thing for a player to get. Young had something like a 6% walk rate in the minors - 98 walks in over 1600 PA. Both Sano and Buxton seem to be better at that. And Upton's weakest tool has been his hit tool, I don't think Buxton has that problem. Sano could hit for avg/onbase like Upton but with more power. I think Buxton's floor is a different type of player (good avg, no power). But it is what it is and they aren't the only two prospects we have.
  7. Honestly, why do you think that? What evidence do you have - outside of wishful thinking - that Sanchez is going to be a healthy pitcher in 3 years? He's never been durable and he's already having shoulder injuries in year one of his contract. Ignoring the PED pitchers, many, many pitchers are done as remotely effective pitchers by that age. Radke, Santana, Steib, Clement, Meche, Zito etc. What do you see in Sanchez that makes you think he'll turn into a durable pitcher or buck the normal aging trends?
  8. I think Plouffe, like Perkins, can be traded but only if the offer is pretty high. Even with Sano, Plouffe might be used at 1B, a corner OF spot or DH. I wouldn't want to give him away. And a few teams could certainly use him - Yankees, Angels, maybe Cleveland.
  9. I think he'll be back but if he does go, it'll be his idea. I also wonder if they don't extend him during the season, if another team (Royals? Seattle?) gives him a strong offer before we do. He's only 55 and pretty well respected.
  10. I agree with part of your post. FA should be utilized and if the Pohlads don't significantly increase payroll in a few years, I'll be bitching right there with you. But I just think it should be used as a finishing product. I honestly don't see the point in paying Sanchez 15m (or whatever)to maybe win 2 more games this year, for two reasons. 1) A few extra wins mean nothing and hurts draft position and 2) we need Sanchez for our core in a few years. If he's hurt then, we won't get another guy. (That said, I think the Twins should spend the money to get the Cuban defector since he's young enough to be part of the next Twins core, so long as their scouts think he is the real thing). All FA classes have warts, that's why they are generally used to augment a team, not drive it. Now, the successes of our young players might move up our timeline, but that's a different thread.
  11. Shoulder injuries at 29 aren't normally the guys you want to bet on down the road.
  12. Or, better the GM construct another playoff caliber team.
  13. Well, if there's nothing there in 3 years then Sanchez wouldn't have helped anyway.
  14. Bit of a stretch to compare the two. I could just as easily point to a pitcher that was good at 29 and done at 34. Say Johan Santana. Sanchez has never thrown 200 innings in a season, Lee had done it 3x by his age 29 season. Sanchez already went to the DL this season with a strained shoulder. That isn't a the type of guy you'd normally bet to have a long durable career. No reason for the Twins to outbid Detroit for him and watch him waste roster/payroll when the next core is ready.
  15. I was going to post that, too. Having Sano stick at third - and remember the Twins were in the minority on that view last year - is huge. It let's them stick another elite bat at either RF/DH or 1B for awhile. Great news.
  16. Was their an excerpt you can post on that?
  17. Yep. What has been a real pleasant surprise (to me, anyway) is how well Rosario has been at AA - .284/.357/.432. I thought he'd stuggle more but his k and bb are at good numbers.
  18. I agree. He's a pretty good GM. Love to see him get a haul for Perkins now.
  19. They have another article behind a pay wall about 10 potential break out candidates for next year. Would think Rosario's on that list. Anyhow, it's great to see Sano and Buxton so highly regarded. Buxton is hitting pretty well after his promotion. .855 OPS from a 19yr old in the FSL is great, it would put him 14th overall if he had enough ab to qualify for the league. It's really amazing that, even with Hicks, Arcia and Gibson essentially removed from the prospect camps, our system is still doing so well.
  20. Per mlbtraderumors: "A major league source told Martino that the Twins will likely shop Mike Pelfrey later this month, if he makes a strong few starts. While the 29-year-old hasn't exactly been a world-beater this year - he has a 6.11 ERA with 4.8 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 - he could perhaps get better as he moves further from last year's Tommy John surgery and appeal to a contender willing to throw starters against the wall like the Orioles."
  21. Yeah, not the most inspiring of homestands. Oh well, I guess I'd prefer one more top 5 pick than a top 10 pick.
  22. Ignoring Perkins, Morneau and Willingham, it sounds like they'll move Pelfrey and could move Burton, Correa or Fein as well. Plouffe could have value, too. Sure, Perkins has the most value but Willingham could have some off season value if he comes back healthy. It would be better if Morneau, for instance, was hitting like he used to but it is what it is. Let's see what Ryan can get before we complain too much.
  23. I'm not quite as down on him as others but he certainly needs to start showing more. This is a good sign. Hopefully he continues to develop.
