  1. Bummer. In some ways, it's more interesting how not-so-great players finish up their careers. Bouncing around the country (or world) hoping to get another shot. At least he got a WS ring.
  2. Astros tried to trade for him a few years ago. Not sure if he's changed much since then - everyone knew he was a no hit, good defense catcher. I think he has marginal trade value, at least more than a LOOGY, in that ML quality catchers are hard to find. WAR has a ton of problems and I don't really like it but, according to WAR, Drew was about as valuable to the Twins last year as Gerald Laird, Kurt Suzuki or Lou Marson were to their teams.
  3. That is optimistic but I don't think, except for Gibson, there is much starting pitching help coming this year. I think the team still needs a bit more talent infusion, either in the draft or trades, before they can jump up. But I think Ryan is going in the right direction. And hopefully Morneau and Willingham start hitting again.
  4. Well, first off, he's 29. If you didn't know the names but you were told you could have a 29 year old catcher who put up a .550 OPS in the majors last year and managed about .2 WAR (mostly b/c of his defense) or you could have a 25 year old OFer who, in 8 minor league seasons, has a .558 OPS against AAA pitching, who would you pick?
  5. They have a ton of potential LOOGYs - Thielbar (26), Thompson (26), Hernandez (24) - who are all pitching better than him at AAA. As bad as Thomas is, he's a lot better than Benson.
  6. I think fangraphs had an article on this. Toronto was sorta breaking the spirit of the rules with all their waiver claims. The idea was that if you claimed someone, they were supposed to have a real shot with your organization and not just be org depth.
  7. I'm honestly not sure but isn't he on a ML contract this year? So even if the Twins release him, they still have to pay him his 1m salary? And he isn't the worst player on the 40 man roster.
  8. I think this is more of a 2013 move. Thomas is the only viable backup CF we might have right now. Hicks will have more rope but if they need to send him to AAA they needed Thomas, who otherwise would have left for an opportunity somewhere else. Robertson has no trade value. At best he's a LOOGY, which are everywhere.
  9. I'd be very surprised if Morales was on our 40 man roster next year. He's had over 2000 milb PA, 1000 of them at A+ where he's hit .255/.332/.378 while striking out over a quarter of the time. I know he's had some injury issues but I don't think he's the type of guy you worry about losing, even though he is still only 23. Now if they promote him to AA and he he puts up a .875 OPS, I'll change my mind.
  10. Yeah, that makes sense. Too bad about Robertson. I remember when we were all hoping he could be a big time starter for us. But he is walking 7/9ip in AAA right now. Ouch. Still, Toronto will claim him. I don't know if losing Robertson itself is a big deal, although some might. I think Aaron Thompson could step in and replace him now.
  11. Yeah, the Twins generally have been pretty well regarded in this area. A few years back, BA listed them as the 3rd best team over the last decade in drafting, focusing on getting a lot of value out of later round picks. I no longer have that link or the link to the 2004 draft grade which gave the team the best grade. Here's their grades from 05-08 period. Obviously, the Twins under Ryan/Radcliff were able to draft and develop a pretty good group of players and restock while still winning. That's pretty tough to do. The big change that Badsmerf is alluding to happened in 08 when Johnson replaced Radcliff as draft guru and we saw a change toward more hard throwing pitchers, none of whom have yet to make the majors, although Gibson will this year and Bullock was used to get Diamond. And last year the Twins drafted the BPA, which looks like it will work out for us. This should be another fun draft.
  12. My prediction at the beginning of the year was that they'd be surpisingly competitve to about the break (I think I suggested 38-42) but Ryan would make some trades (Morneau, Willingham maybe Perkins) and they'd have a terrible second half. 38-42 might be overly optimistic but May was going to be a tough month. Regardless, they are more fun to watch this year and Hicks and eventually Arcia and Gibson give us something to look forward to.
  13. Love to see a few more starts like that. I think he'll be sent to AAA before the majors but I could be wrong.
  14. Yep. He'll go to AA later this year and could be like Mauer, set to debut next spring. Souhan was the first person to really push this, I think, but I've seen it mentioned a few times now by prospect watchers. If he tears up AA this year, he'll certainly be up next year, although it might make sense to wait until June to get that extra year of service time.
  15. I generally agree with you, the best talent usually goes at the top of the draft and I would be very upset if the Twins didn't take BPA. The one exception would be if they took McGuire and managed to nab Manaea in the 2nd round. But I think that's nearly impossible and would much rather they took Stewart and played it straight the rest of the way. That said, I think your expectations are too high on what you expect from the 2nd rounders. Over the last decade the Twins have developed several solid MLers from the second round, namely Baker, Crain, Slowey and even Swarzak has some value. That's more than the rest of the AL central teams combined. And they also traded 3 2nd rounders for Cabrera, Castillo and Diamond, so there was some additional value there.
  16. Yep, that's me. I'm all for human sacrifice. :shoot:
  17. Meh. Last time I got into a discussion about how stupid fan theories on Gardy favorites was, Brock banned me. So, I'll just say I find it hard to believe positive post game comments about our best starting pitching are anything other than normal manager speak and do not suggest any thing other than that.
  18. I guess you guys are getting a lot more out of one sentence than I am. He's apparently Gardy's new favorite and his pet. And here I thought he was just a professional pitcher.
  19. What do you want Gardy to say? "He's not really a good pitcher but that's all Ryan gave me?" If Gardy criticizes a player in the press, the board lights up and accuses him of throwing someone under the bus. If he encourages a guy through the press, we get posts like this.
  20. I heard a rumor that since this is a bit of pitching heavy draft, the 1st round will see a run on the few bats so a few solid pitchers could slide into the 2nd round. I'm hoping one of the college type arms - Gonzalez, Windle, Ziomek, Hursh, Blair type come at #43. I also wouldn't be surprised if the Twins took AK reliever Suggs. He fits Johnson's flame thrower type and the Twins have scouted the crap out of Arkansas the last year since they were also looking at Stanek. I'd also be happy with any HS high ceiling type but I don't really know who they are.
  21. Good reads. Liked the Buxton comment.
  22. OK. Here's the predictions: 1. Moran - I do think they do this now 2. Appel - Perfect spot for him 3. Bryant - Colorado seems to love him but if they take Gray than Twins take Bryant 4. Gray - 5. Frazier - reach pick? but I think they like him over Stanek or Shipley 6. Shipley - Everyone seems to think Miami has a deal in place here already 7. Stewart - Red Sox should be delighted to get him 8. Ball - Not sure where Ball goes but this seems about right. Too bad it's KC. 9. McGuire - Could be Meadows, too but Pitt has been on him a lot 10.Stanek - He's falling too much. Toronto gets a nice pick. 43 - Ziomek or AK reliever Suggs.
  23. Mauer is our ideal #2 hitter. The problem is, he's also our best #3 hitter. Heck, maybe we should move Morneau to the #2 spot. We have holes all over our lineup for now so complaining about this is like complaining that we put red lipstick on the pig instead of blue lipstick.
  24. You know, I read that as the Twins were considering 4 guys they like but left unsaid was that they weren't considering the 3 likely gone before hand. So I assumed they were considering Stewart, Shipley, McGuire and Frazier. But I might be wrong.
  25. This would require the Astros to take Moran and the two pitchers going 2 and 3. I think the Rockies are more likely to take Bryant than either pitcher, from what I've read, but if he's there at #4, I'd take him. Appel is the only player I'd have ahead of Bryant. With him, Sano, Walker, Arcia etc the Twins would have some very impressive power bats in their system.
