  1. I like Schafer as a 4th OFer - he grades well in the corners - and with HIcks floundering, he is just a place holder until Buxton arrives. He was a former top prospect, it's ok to give him a shot. But, my God, has he looked bad in CF. I suspect Ryan knows that. Bullpens change dramatically year to year that it's not worth worrying about. Good luck to Molitor though. I think he'd be up if not for the injuries. Probably more of a Molitor choice though. I think May will be up within the month, once he is stretched out. Eventually the pen will have Burdi and Reed and maybe Meyer.
  2. Right now, i'd see if the Dodgers wanted to exchange bad contracts with Either straight up.
  3. My God, what a bad outing. I managed to catch the first two innings but had to go back to work. He's the real problem. With all that money, I don't think they'll drop him from the rotation for a while.
  4. No idea but would bet it's lower b/c they have a pretty strong union (and I'm usually pro-union).
  5. Well, I'm sure Berrios/Meyer/Stewart/Gordon would be enough but the Twins wouild be nuts to do that. I just don't see how they would take on that salary. I don't think the Twins can trade for a legit ace in this market. They can try and sign a guy like Zimmerman in FA next year (they won't) or they can try and trade for prospects who may develop into aces (like with Meyer). But they aren't bringing on a 80m contract and losing all those prospects at the same time. The Latos trade was the first one between Reds and Padres.
  6. The Padres are in win-now mode and have some nice depth at pitcher so a guy like Tyson Ross (probably overrated a bit b/c of his home park) could be moved. Depending on how they view him (starter or UI), a package of Escobar + 2 of Meyer/Berrios/Stewart + Polanco might be enough.
  7. I think the Phillies are going to want a few top prospects in return. Padres got a couple top 50 prospects plus a pretty strong reliever and Edison Volquez for Mat Latos. Obviously, salary is gong to be a part of any deal but I don't think Meyer's trade stock is all that strong, as he is 25 and still has control issues. Berrios doesn't have the ceiling and Stewart is too far away. I don't think the Phillies would trade Hamels without Sano or Buxton being a key piece. Pitching is expensive right now and even non-aces, guys like Chris Archer, would probably be pretty hard to get.
  8. http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/56680/older-and-wiser-torii-hunter-still-producing-at-the-plate Congrats to Parker for getting mentioned by ESPN's sweetspot blog on his interview with Hunter. "What the Twins are hoping for is another solid year at the plate. Parker Hageman of the Twins Daily blog has a good interview with Hunter on how he has remained a productive hitter into his late 30s, hitting .301 from his age-36 to age-38 seasons:"
  9. http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/56665/diamondbacks-have-no-clue-what-to-do-with-yasmany-tomas Interesting article. Dbacks gave Tomas nearly 70m to play third base but he doesn't seem able to hold it down. So they have to send him to a corner OF spot but already have Trumbo making Colabello look like a gold glover in RF. They can't put him at firstbase b/c they have a pretty good first basemen and the NL has no DH. And he didn't look good in ST anyway. So he's in the minors and the Dbacks will have to move Trumbo - who doesn't have much trade value, to be kind.

  11. These aren't really comparable things, though. On play A, Torii was right and checked his swing in time. On play B, Torii was right and checked his swing in time. West made the mistake. Hitters do have to protect the plate in those circumstances but no one is suggesting that the pitch itself was a strike, which I think would have been a different issue.
  12. Maybe we're looking at it different but if, on the last pitch, West said "oh, he didn't go after all" and then Hunter went less this time, then, no, I think the lesson would be on the umpire, not the player.
  13. I don't know enough about the international players to have an intelligent view on the signings but I do want the Twins to spend every penny of it, in whatever way they deem is fruitful.
  14. http://www.politico.com/story/2015/04/rand-paul-2016-campaign-launch-116723.html?hp=t1_r I guess being "not as crazy" as Cruz counts for something. Paul should have some support among the libertarian types within the GOP but he might have peaked a couple years ago. His libertarian bend on issues like restoring voting rights to felons, criminal justice reform (targeting mandatory minimums and asset forfeiture) and legalization of marijuana probably make him a longshot to get the nomination. I think he'd be a very interesting general election candidate but I can't see how he gets there unless he runs as a third party but the Dems/Repub have pretty much destroyed any chance of a real third party choice.
  15. He was on losing teams in 99, 2000, 07 and 2010 and only the first two would be bad, the other two were within a few games of .500 (which is still where I think this team finishes).
  16. http://screamer.deadspin.com/report-*******s-racially-abuse-black-kids-on-ac-milans-1696087354/+kevindraper This is one of the sadder articles I've seen. First, these people are freaking *******s for yelling racist chants at kids. "After the match, which Milan won 4-0, the team complained to tournament organizers, and heartbreakingly "consoled their black players who had been abused."" But my second thought was, under 10 soccer league? Wow, they really take soccer seriously in Europe.
  17. Somewhat ironic that Tiger fans are defending Torii over West. They must have a hidden agenda. http://www.blessyouboys.com/2015/4/6/8356073/detroit-tigers-minnesota-twins-torii-hunter-joe-west?_ga=1.91631130.1468869491.1403014430 "Starting out at odds with an umpire with 161 games to go likely won't carry over through the whole season, but there's likely to be some frustration and maybe a little bitterness. In Businessweek's Umpire Ranking, among 50 umpires with at least 2,500 ball-strike calls, West ranked dead last in 2014. Whether Hunter went or not may be up for debate for the forseeable future. But Hunter wouldn't be the first to have a beef with West, especially when the umpire has a history of making questionable calls in the past. But for all the negativity surrounding the call in the first game of the regular season, Hunter had nothing but good things to say about his former teammate. And as for the fans in right field? They were "awesome," and Hunter was happy to be back in Detroit." The Tiger fans also pointed out that West had asked for help on the previous pitch (a ball) where it looked like Hunter offered more. Oh well. No baseball today.
  18. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/298822711.html I know some don't like Souhan but I do. Here were his quick takes 1) Santana has great range at short - I thought he looked great defensively today, too. That play at third with Plouffe to get Iglaseas (I think it was him) was really nice. 2) Schafer better play better defense than that. - Comerica is pretty big but he certainly looked a little hesitant out there. 3) Price was good but Twins (esp Suzuki's almost-HR and Santana's liner) got some nice contact with no results. - I was happy with some of the contact by our guys. They'll have games where a few of those things fall. 4) Joe West has to ask for help, the game could have been a lot more fun. - Obviously, we already have a thread on this but Ausmus was stupid for taking Price out. That doesn't get brought up enough. 5) Hunter was still angry after the game. - Glad to hear that, actually. I'm sure most players want to win against their former team but I'm glad he's upset about it. Better than reading about the fun bunch anyway.
  19. I was wondering about that. I think the positioning of the camera at Comerica isn't as good as it is at TF so some pitches toward the LH batters box might be closer than they look on TV. I didn't bother to check gameday today but maybe?
  20. It'll be interesting to see how often we get threads like this when a player rips an ump. Frankly, Hunter's actions seemed pretty common place. But we will see how others view it when it's not Hunter.
  21. Well that just makes up for the segment of the fan base that wants to see an outspoken black man fail, so it goes both ways. Hunter's actions tonight seemed to be pretty mild and something that's pretty common in baseball. West was right not to escalate it and Hunter will get a fine.
  22. It's funny, I saw that I had done that and I thought I changed it before I posted the thread in the first place (I even made that joke to myself). But apparently I didn't. Or a moderator is ****** with me.
  23. Barring injuries, I think Milone and Pelfrey get about 4 or 5 starts and then the team goes to May or Meyer (or Berrios). Nolasco and Gibson probably get two months before a change is ordered (either a demotion or a trip to the bullpen). Hughes is in the rotation all year. (Of course, if May/Meyer/Berrios are scuffling/injured, those timelines might change. But let's pray that doesn't happen).
