  1. He's out of options (so is Dylan Bundy) so he'd need to make the ML team, which he wasn't going to do. He's only thrown 167 innings since being drafted. He threw 35 innings in 2013, missed all of 2014 and only threw 8 innings last year. Arm troubles. He had a torn labrum and rotator cuff issues.
  2. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/mariners-designate-danny-hultzen-for-assignment.html Seattle's drafting issues continue. Hultzen was the "safe" choice in the 2011 draft after Cole. Rendon was the best bat and HS arms Bradley and Bundy were thought to have higher upside but Hultzen was probably the safest pick. But he couldn't stay healthy and never made the majors. He'll be 26 next year and someone will probably claim him based on his pedigree.
  3. Phil Neikro threw 18 more innings than Ryan for #4. 5404 to 5386. And the answer was strike outs - 15 seasons of 200+ Ks v 14 of 200+ip. At 44, Ryan had an amazing season - he "only" threw 173ip but struck out 203 for his only non-200ip, 200 strike out year.
  4. Nothing else to do. I didn't know the answer to this but I guessed right. Nolan Ryan pitched for 27 seasons. He's the all time leader in strike outs and he's #5 all-time in IP (and three of the guys ahead of him pitched in the deadball era). So, here's the question. Did Ryan have more 200 strike out seasons or more 200 ip seasons?
  5. Those guys might make the same (or better) value but that's not usually the comparison when making "win-now" trades. The team moving prospects is making two bets - 1) They can get a lot better faster now with (in this case) Fernandez and 2) they have or can acquire depth to make up for the loss of the prospects in some other way down the road. A healthy Fernandez upgrades the pitching staff tremendously - the Twins can go with a rotation of Fernandez, Santana, Hughes, Gibson and Duffey to start the season leaving May to strengthen the pen and they'd still have SP depth with Milone and Nolasco, as well. That said, I still don't think my proposal would win out. And there's no chance that Ryan makes that proposal anyway.
  6. If he is healthy, I'd probably do a package of Berrios/Kepler + Jay/Gordon and Burdi and Walker but I'm not sure that would be enough.
  7. http://deadspin.com/the-jose-fernandez-trade-rumors-just-started-and-report-1743497841 Sounds like Fernandez might be on the block. Healthy, he's a real ace and under team control for a few more years. But he's had health issues - 19 starts the last two years - and, apparently, an attitude issue. Miami has made a lot of trades for good prospects and I doubt the Twins could start a conversation without at least including Berrios. It'll be interesting to see what happens.
  8. Yeah, he had a pectoral injury, IIRC. Going into the season, he was projected as a first round pick but b/c of the injury he dropped. It's hard to complain too much about that draft b/c it's looking like that might become of the Twins really good draft years (Buxton, Berrios, Chargois, Jones, Walker, Duffey) but I remember I was really hoping they'd take Pierce Johnson, who went one pick later. Johnson was supposed to be a quick to the majors college arm.
  9. Maybe, but the Astros got a lot of "sleeper" love before the year began - esp from ESPN's Schoenfeld. I don't think anyone expected the Twins to do anything but finish last again. Anyhow, good first year for Molitor.
  10. The trade price is about right - he's number 11 on mlbpipeline's list of prospects, C+, as you say, by Sickels. Maybe a similar trade would have been Jermaine Palacios for us. I think that's a trade we probably should have done. Seems like a good get for Detroit. His contract is reasonable.
  11. I'll try and reach for one potential reason for optimism for Mauer for next year. A lot of pretty good hitters (and Mauer was definitely a very good hitter) have had a bounce back season as they got old. Torre at 35 had a nice jump from a 91 OPS+ season to a 124 OPS+ season. Ted Simmons, Frank Thomas, Morneau, etc. So maybe Mauer has another high on-base season in him.
  12. Just saw this thread, very nice write-up. As for expectations, I expect Park to come in second in ROY voting to Buxton, hit 28 HRs and make the all-star team.
  13. I'm a little surprised he came in third considering how bad the Twins were projected to do. I have to admit, he was a much better manager than I thought he'd be.
  14. This was a fun read and explained why Sano wouldn't have been a horrible choice for ROY - it was written in Sept. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/jabo-boosting-miguel-sanos-case-for-rookie-of-the-year/
  15. I'm not sure if it's posturing - outside of Twins fans, Vargas has never been highly regarded. He has big power but was never a top prospect (Klaw has labeled him a AAAA player) and the problems in his approach aren't a secret. This might just be the Twins hoping to get something ($) out of a guy they know is expendable and won't be on their 40 man roster come April.
  16. I thought Lindor should have won too but all three look like pretty good players.
  17. If I were Vargas, I'd want this to happen although I'm not sure if the Twins would.
  18. Obviously, I know nothing but he looks like a good on-base guy but he's only 5'9" and doesn't have a lot of power. He'd really have to hit in the majors to make it work. Seems risky but again, I know nothing. If the Twins think he'd be a better corner OFer than Rosario, go for it.
  19. Just saw this thread but for all the deleted threads, warning posts and bans I've gotten, I've never had the sense that the mods were pro-TR.
  20. Yeah, it's not an ideal comparison but close enough for government work, as my dad used to say.
  21. Probably the best bullpen arm on the block was moved to Boston for 4 top 30 Red Sox prospects including two in the top 100. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/red-sox-to-acquire-craig-kimbrel.html A similar trade, value-wise, by the Twins might be something like Berrios, Polanco, Wheeler and Landa, maybe?
  22. Nice article. I think Hicks' ceiling is better but I don't think he can reach it. It's a solid trade but I understand the frustration.
  23. But don't you want the Nats to get rid of their chokers? Thank you, I'll be here all day!
  24. http://www.federalbaseball.com/2015/11/12/9724862/will-the-nationals-be-able-to-trade-jonathan-papelbon-or-drew-storen Apparently, Papelbon isn't worth much on the trade market right now - "Three GMs of teams seeking a closer were asked if they'd consider Jonathan Papelbon," Heyman wrote, "and the responses were 'No,' 'Pass,' and uproarious laughter, which was also taken as a no." And it sounds like teams are lowballing the Nats on offers for Storen, their closer turned set-up man turned really unhappy camper. Storen will make nearly 9m this upcoming season and with Paps in the pen, isn't going to close. Rizzo claims that he'll keep both unless he gets a "real baseball offer." I didn't realize Storen was going to make that much money but the Twins have shown interest in him twice - right before the draft and in the first Span trade rumors. I had thought that the Twins could get him for their tradeable second round pick but that might be more than needed right now. There's no way the Nats can keep both of these guys right now so they may end up moving Storen (or Paps) for nearly nothing. And the Twins, obviously, could use some bullpen help. I do think Perkins would be ok moving out of the closer role since he's already been paid if that is needed. And both Storen and Paps have really seen their value reduced mostly (but not completely) because of things that didn't happen on the baseball diamond.
  25. Today is give to the max day to support our local chapter of the ACLU. The MN ACLU has been a great organization that has recently worked hard on the Vote NO! campaigns, prominent supports of LGBT rights - in fact, the ACLU MN brought forth the very first right to marry case! The ACLU MN works on racial discrimination, privacy rights and first amendment issues. To support, you don't even have to donate money - all you need to do is share one of their many facebook posts (or tweets) today about "give to the max." Every time you share a post, a donor will give $10 to ACLU MN. https://www.facebook.com/aclumn/?fref=ts Thanks!
