  1. Woah. Morneau's slide wasn't remotely dirty. It was just a freak thing and I don't think the new rule would have prevented it or called Cuddy out. http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/6479266/v9761163/mintor-morneau-leaves-the-game-after-getting-hurt It that's a dirty slide outlawed by the new rules, then I think they'll have a much bigger impact on the game and we're looking at Japanese rules. But I don't think it'll come to that.
  2. My thinking is that that part of the rule was never enforced and what this new rule is trying to do is make sure slides like Utley's don't happen. I don't think the umpires will be too aggressive but we'll see. I don't think this changes much since slides like Utley's were pretty rare. Where we'll end up seeing controversy is if/when umpires call interference on plays most of us think were pretty tame. We say some problems with the 'catch' rule implemented last year, IIRC. Generally, I don't think this is a big deal. It gives some consideration to player safety, doesn't alter the game much and will probably be forgotten fairly soon. I admit, I loved the Hal McRae slides but those have been out of baseball for 30+ years. The game is fine. I don't think we're going to be turning into the Japanese game where this is no contact at second, but we'll see.
  3. Not often, but he has a few times. And I don't get the sense that the Twins value him as highly as these outside prospect sites do.
  4. You know, Mays really had a great 2001 season - led the league in ERA+, 3rd in ip, 2nd in pitching WAR (and nearly a full win ahead of third place), and first in adjusted pitcher wins. Not too bad.
  5. Damn it, Dave.
  6. I do wonder if the Twins will put Polanco on the block this year.
  7. I think it's going to be hard, Mike. The math is unreliable - as you noted - yet people use the math to suggest X, others are going to point out the flaws. We get the same problem on threads that use base runs or pyth w/l or WAR - people use the stat out of context or without stating the strong caveats that are needed and others are going to push back. Saying "the math!" isn't going to fix that when the math isn't used correctly or reliably.
  8. I think the MVP answer is Joe Gordon of the Yankees. Back in the 40s.
  9. The rule seems ok. It'll still allow the hard slides that guys like Cuddy used to do all the time but it eliminates the more aggressive slides like Utley's. I'm sure there will some iffy calls during the season while it gets implemented but shouldn't be a big issue. It'll be interesting to see how the umps enforce this.
  10. The offensive side is more important and all three have question marks. Frankly, I think Hicks was the least likely to succeed. A Rosario/Buxton/Sano defense will be fine.
  11. Yeah, this seems like a made up reason to bitch. It was pretty clear the Twins don't think he's going to be a third baseman and it doesn't make much sense to have him worry about playing third while learning a new position. It also didn't make sense for the Twins to throw him straight into the OF in his year back from TJ surgery. They're handling this all right.
  12. With Fowler signing, does that mean the Twins pick #14 now and get a little increase in their draft budget? I thought Fowler had a QO so Baltimore loses a pick, but I could be wrong.
  13. I got 22 and feel like I missed a few obvious ones.
  14. He should be good. I'm really excited about the bullpen we might end up having soon. Could be a lot like the old Nasty Boy Reds teams.
  15. I can't really say the rankings of Stewart, Walker and Meyer are wrong but I'm probably more bullish on those two pitchers and a lot less optimistic on Walker - but, GOD, I hope I'm wrong on him. I'd love for him to become a major HR threat for the Twins. Thorpe seems about right, coming back from TJ. I think the Twins have five pitchers who could be better than a #3 in their system - Jay, Stewart, Meyer, Berrios and Thorpe. Obviously, there are questions with all of them but IF it breaks right ... I have to admit, I don't know much about Peterson but the numbers look good.
  16. I've mentioned this before but an article on HBT, i believe, studied lineup construction and they made a couple conclusions. 1) Lineup construction was massively over-rated. Unless you were purposefully trying to create a bad lineup, it really didn't matter. And they discussed having a low obp guy in the two spot of the pitcher batting 8th and neither really mattered. They actually said you could draw names out of a hat and you'd probably be ok. 2) With that said, the most important spots were #1, 2 and 4. #3 was overrated.
  17. Yeah, that might not have been the best FA signing.
  18. Nice list. I know Walker's a bit of a divisive prospect but I really hope he gets it all figured out. It's nice to see some young players in the 11-20 range that might be able to make some big jumps this year. If Palacios can stick at short stop, the team really has some nice depth there in the minors. Thorpe had been ranked by BP on their top 101 a few years ago. Hopefully he gets back to where he was and continues to develop. Another good lefty would be really fun to have.
  19. http://deadspin.com/jonathan-papelbon-is-back-with-the-nationals-and-not-c-1760558786 I really thought there would be no chance that he'd still be there but what do I know? Anyhow, the best part of this story is that Paps wanted to wear a muscle shirt with "Obama can't ban these guns" to the apology press conference but team officials talked him out of it. So he wore it later and told the press he wanted to wear it earlier. Man, he's the gift that keeps on giving.
  20. Well, it certainly worked on getting some people to pick it since this post was about the Sano and Buxton notes.
  21. Fun little article by everyone's favorite writer - http://www.startribune.com/not-signing-greinke-that-was-a-controversy-i-ll-be-darned/369584271/ Mostly it's a bunch of quick hit observations on the team but one thing that jumped out at me was that the Twins want Sano in the OF partly because they are worried about his weight and think if he's DH-only, it'll go up. He also suggests that Molitor will keep Buxton in the majors no matter how he's hitting.
  22. Wow, this thread became a dumpster fire. "Facts" being used with no context? Check. Angry assumptions and innuendo? Check. Barely concealed insults and contempt for other posters? Check. I bet we can make this thread go longer than the Zach Jones thread!
  23. I think Klaw ranked the system #3 overall but BA had them #10 overall. MLBpipeline is in the process of releasing their rankings. My guess is we'll be top 10 there as well. I'm not sure if BP or others have done team rankings.
  24. Change has been happening but in the wrong direction - and it's because democrats have decided that they are ok with rights being taken away so long as a democrat is doing it. On some issues, I bend and end up voting for some democratic turd but on some issues I won't bend. If the politician thinks a surveillance state or targeted killing are acceptable, I won't vote for her, no matter what letter she has behind her name.
  25. This was kind of the same argument we heard when Gibson had options and the Twins had three other pitchers without them as a reason why Gibson would start in AAA. He didn't. I really think Nolasco is in trouble - unless he has a great ST, he'll start in the bullpen, leaving a spot for Duffey. But it's still early and we have injuries and trades that can/will affect things yet.
