  1. Yeah, he also said it was a thin pool at the top. Reminds me of the 2000 draft, which sucked.
  2. Any thoughts on Nick Senzel (mlb #14) or Bobby Dalbec (mlb #15)? Both play third in decent colleges.
  3. Man, I bet Jed Hoyer probably had a say or two in the decisions ... I think Theo is a fine and I also think he's an overrated. He's had massive financial advantages that people seem to want to ignore. It's still probably a bit early to make a decision on these drafts. Since 2012, only 5 players (Bryant, Buxton, Schawber, Duffey and Zack Godley) have even had a cup of coffee in the majors from these drafts. But we're also getting off track.
  4. Actually, it's kind of an interesting comparison. Since the 2012 draft, and just going over the first five rounds, the two teams have picked (I don't think I missed anyone but I might have): HS pitchers Twins 3 Cubs 7 HS bats Twins 4 Cubs 2 College pitchers Twins 14 Cubs 7 College bats Twins 2 Cubs 6 Johnson seems to have changed the draft strategies that Radcliff had. The three HS pitchers (Berrios, Gonsalves and Stewart) have some upside and fans have been clamoring for that for years. Still not sure I'm sold on his college fire ballers approach but he's sticking to it. Cubs seem to be more even but ignore HS bats. (But, SSS and all). I think some of the picks (Buxton at 2, Bryant at 3) were pretty obvious picks but picks like Schwaber and Jay might tell us more about the teams draft strategies.
  5. Man, Bugs was a great pitcher in his day.
  6. Nice write up. I think a college bat who can play third would be nice to nab.
  7. So Rogers is probably the LOOGY and Pressly gets a bigger role?
  8. Yes, about half of the starting 9 are inexperienced and they happen to be at three of the most important offensive positions. I guess I just don't get surprise. I think the optimists and pessimists both thought that there would be a learning curve for Buxton and Park. That Rosario would have to improve on his OBP and that Sano would have to make adjustments to the league that is adjusting to him. It's not surprising that they are struggling a bit. I think it will be surprising if they are struggling in July.
  9. How about inexperienced? Rosario, Buxton, Sano and Park have a combined 1043 plate appearances. That's fewer than Eduardo Escobar has. Heck, even Murphy only has 292. Those guys have talent and I think they figure it out sooner rather than later but I do think it's reasonable to say that they'll likely make the adjustments.
  10. That's really not relevant. We've added a lot more playoff spots in the last few years to make that stat basically meaningless. I think when we were 0-6, ESPN noted only three teams started 0-6 and made the playoffs and two (if not all three) were after the playoff expansion. The fact that we are 0-3 against Baltimore isn't really that important. 0-4 against the central is a bit more of a concern but they'll have all season to make that up.
  11. Winning in clusters is pretty normal. Last year, the Astros started 30-17 and went 56-59 for the rest of the season. A few weeks later, the Twins had their best 47 game run of the season and went 27-20. They were 56-59 for the rest of the year. There are good arguments for why the Twins might be in a bad spot (regression, young player development time, etc) but win/loss clusters isn't one of them.
  12. On the ESPN chat today, Drew from MPLS got the last word - "Dave I'm going to the Twins game on Thursday. I have great seats. It is finally going to warm up to 70-ish. It's a noon game so I'm skipping work. I'm probably going to drink 3 beers and eat some walleye or a Murray's steak sandwich. Or both. All of that is great, literally my favorite things in the world. But if the Twins are 0-9 at the end of that game I'm going to burn Minneapolis to the ground. Some would say I'm overreacting. (I will burn those people to the ground.) Go Twins. Please." I might have to stay away from downtown ....
  13. My concerns might have been overstated. Bautista had a really nice take out slide on Pedroia the other day that didn't get a call. If that slide is ok, I think we're probably good. http://m.mlb.com/video/v582350983/bostor-pillar-donaldson-score-on-grounder-error/?game_pk=446942
  14. Good list. I really like Cabbage and he'll start showing up on a lot of sleeper lists soon. I'd probably add his draft mate Blankenhorn to the list, as well. I really liked those two picks. I think Gordon could sky rocket up the top 100 lists this season. He can play short and his power should begin to show. I don't know if he'll break out but I'm really interested in seeing how well Turner can hit. He had a decent amount of walks in AA last year. Hopefully, he can be a bit more than Drew Buetera.
  15. Last year the Twins started 1-6 but, frankly, they looked a lot worse than this years 0-7 team. It's a horrible start but it really shouldn't make you re-think your ST position on the Twins, at least not yet.
  16. I think it's probably a bit too early to much. We probably had this exact same thread last year. I am worried about Park and imagine he'll be the first domino but I'd give him more than 5 or 6 starts.
  17. I think you can be against some changes without having to be against EVERY change. The DH makes baseball better, less boring and more fun to watch. It's also survived for 40 years. This new slide rule is in it's first week, let's see how it plays out. Two years from now, maybe no one cares/remembers.
  18. I'm pretty sure he always played like that - I believe his successful appeal actually compared his slide to many of his other slides. It's just now that we care (I guess).
  19. I do think Bruno was a bit overrated by fans when he came up b/c he was "new" and not Varva. IIRC, his main success were getting Parmelee and Benson to start hitting at AA. And then he seemed to stress pull hitting - which Vavra didn't seem to and all was right. But I do think the strike outs and low on-base percentages are a real concern that has to be addressed. I'm just not sure if it's by getting a new hitting coach or new players or just waiting it out.
  20. Of course baseball will continue to be played. I prefer the American version to the Japanese, I prefer the AL to the NL. But it's still baseball and I'll watch it. And your constant exaggerations - spikes up, intent to injure - really don't help you. It just makes you seem like a guy with an axe to grind, facts be damned. None of three videos showed players with spikes up or an intent to injure. It showed three guys trying to slide hard to break up a double play. I'm honestly not sure how anyone can try and break up the double play on some of these calls.
  21. I think your emphasis on "reckless behavior" is the issue - most fans don't see it as such. And, as mentioned by players, if you really cared about player safety there was a big list of things to work on before the slide - including making uniform stadiums, more off days and less travel days. Injuries on slides into second base are/were extremely rare. So to combat a minor (at best) issue, we are taking aggressiveness out of the game and to add insult to injure, it's a discretionary call that we've seen umpires treat differently. So it's not even uniform. I suspect that mlb will modify this rule like they did the catch rule last year but so far the early returns are pretty bad.
  22. Just a reminder, while a lot of people were down on Stewart, he did make Klaw's top 100 this season.
  23. I actually like that idea a lot.
  24. Yeah, I saw the Astros call. Looks like MLB wants the game played in a different way. That's too bad but it is what it is. Hopefully, the push back by players and fans changes this but this rule certainly seems to affecting the game a lot more than I thought it would.
  25. 217 and I missed some huge names in the 1990s.
