  1. Keep in mind that prospect ranking is an inexact science at best. MLB's scouts had him #7 while BA had him #3 and in the top 100. I tend to think mlb is better than BA but still, it's a solid get.
  2. I would guess that Mejia will slot in at #6 between Gonslaves and Stewart on mlb's list.
  3. Solid return. I actually thought the Twins were aiming for Mejia or Clevinger (Cle) with the Nunez rumors so I was pretty happy to be right for once. Good luck to Nunez in SF.
  4. My thoughts are that this should be divided a second time. The 08-11 period under Johnson and Smith and then the 12-16 period where Ryan and Radcliff had more input. And the draft pool thing came into effect in 2012, as well. I'm not sure how much budget affected the 08-11 drafts but we know there were pretty strong rumors it affected previous drafts. That said, Johnson certainly has some differences than Radcliff - we mainly see that with the type of pitchers he takes. He prefers fireballers whereas Radcliff focused more on control (this is an imperfect comparison as Johnson did draft Wimmers and Radcliff did take Garza and Durbin). But right now, the 08 draft (3 first rounders) was a big miss. And 11 was pretty rough, too. But 2012 could be an all-timer. I'm not sold on Johnson but the last few drafts have been a lot more exciting than his first few. Maybe he's learning, maybe there's more than we know. In a recent chat, Klaw had good things to say about the Twins scouting department so maybe there's more to know. I won't complain if the new GM replaces Johnson but I won't complain if he keeps him. I think there's just too much to this that I don't know.
  5. Yeah, that was my thought. And he could be on a innings limit so maybe he makes 17 starts for AA and then pitches out of the bullpen for 2 months to end the season, like Santana and Liriano? But it depends on how he pitches. If he has a 6.00 ERA, it doesn't matter.
  6. 4 top 100 guys - two at AAA and one at AA - isn't too bad. And they have some exciting young guys in the low minors. I think a lot of the next 4 years success or failure will be determined from how Romero, Stewart, Gonsalves and Thorpe develop. Those four are pretty big wild cards.
  7. Shelby Miller is having a much worse season than I thought. Wow. Interesting buy low guy although I'm not sure Neil Allen is the guy to fix what ever is not working for him.
  8. May has nothing to do with Duffey. I think they should give him a shot at starting as well. Although he's been so bad this year that Molitor probably isn't ready to let that happen. And that's the problem, Molitor thinks he's a reliever just like Meyer. I like that they are giving Duffey the shot, they should for May as well - although I do think that May would have to be sent to down to stretch out a bit before starting here.
  9. I don't have a problem with letting him continue to try starting but not at the expense of Berrios. As a starter, he has shown some potential but when his control is off as bad as last night .... But I'd still rather move Nolasco to the pen than Duffey. And if they want to fix him at AAA as a starter, that's ok too.
  10. I am, a little. He throws hard so I suppose that's a concern but I didn't think he was overly injury prone when we drafted him.
  11. Sure. But this **** goes both ways. Trump said something stupid to deflect the issue back to Clinton (it may or may not have worked). Clinton has also said some dumb stuff to deflect the seriousness of issues (wiping her server comment). Both are dumb. Trump's was a tad funnier but - as John Oliver has said - Trump can be legitimately funny.
  12. Oh, I think he was just making a joke. Fairly good one at that, frankly.
  13. I think it's fair to ask that if you want to get rid of Santana b/c you think he will suck next year then the obvious question is wouldn't opposing GMs think that, too? And there would be no market for him.
  14. The few times we've known we'd need money in less than a year, we've just dumped into a CD. It doesn't make much money, really, but it's safe. The one exception was about a year ago. We dumped 10k into HSI thinking that the Court would uphold Obamacare and the stock would spike. It did but we held it hoping to hold for a year (so lower taxes) and it bottomed out. I think we technically lost about 200 dollars on that. So we just should have done the CD.
  15. Damn. At this point, I'd fire Molitor. But it's not really related. Maybe.
  16. Show me a comp trade for Suzuki or Hammer. Show me the market for Plouffe and Santana. GMs knew what Hammer was and that's why the Twins got him on a 3 year deal. Same with Hughes. GMs aren't typically stupid. All the guys - except Perkins and Dozier - are placeholder types. They are fine to have - every team has some - but they don't typically bring back much in trades. Esp when they have years remaining on their contract. As to Dozier, he had his break out season at 27 two years ago. As mentioned, Klaw thought it was a fluke season and others probably agreed with him. And there was no point in trading him (or Gibson) after last year.
  17. Perkins is the only one of those that might have gotten a good return. The rumors for Willingham were a Sean Gilmartin type. Dozier was seen by a fluke by the league for years - Klaw called him a AAAA player until last year (Plouffe as well). Gibson was hurt and until after last year didn't have real trade value. Not sure why you'd trade Gibson after last year. The argument on TD was whether or not you extend him. Suzuki was shopped and there was no market. The Twins have had two solid trade chips - Perkins and Span. They held onto Perkins for a few different reasons. Baseball wise, they thought he'd be part of the next winning team and they were sorta right. He also signed a very team friendly contract and it showed the locker room that the team was committed to making these players part of the winning team. Twins are shopping Santana now but I doubt that a market emerges. The burn it to the ground idea doesn't really fit with ownership. While the Astros were happy to lose 105+ games and get a zero rating and no attendance, the Pohlads won't allow it.
  18. I don't really worry about the age of the prospect/where they are. But in fairness to the Twins, since Brad Steil has taken over the farm director, the Twins have been doing extremely well in the prospect game. He took over in 2012 and has pushed prospects a lot more than what was done before. And while it's true that the Twins have had high draft picks, it seems like the farm system has created some pretty nice prospects that weren't high draft picks - Kepler and Polanco (signed in 09) both had break out seasons and were pushed by Steil. Berrios was a supp pick that would go in the top 10 of a redraft. Gonsalves (4th rd) is ranked in the top 100. Steil pushed Rosario (4th rd) through mid-season promotions. Same with Duffey (5th rd, I believe). And I'm sure Seth could name another half dozen non first rounders that were pushed as well. We do need to see some better transitions to the majors but I'm not sure that's on the minor league guys as opposed to the ML coaches.
  19. I actually like him. I was hoping he'd be someone the Twins could snag. Sure, the power hasn't shown up yet but the eye looks really good. Only 21 but already 165 games in AA. That's something.
  20. Looks like more than just the short stop - http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/07/yankees-trade-aroldis-chapman-cubs.html The Yankees get two top 75 prospects - Torres and Billy McKinney - and a nothing relief pitcher in Warren. That's a pretty high price for a proven closer who beats up women and is a free agent at the end of the year. Edit: Heyman is also reporting that one more player is going to the Yankees as well.
  21. Top tier trade chips (Twins could get a lot back for these guys) - Berrios. We probably don't want to trade him. Nice add ins (probably not the centerpiece of a trade but might allow the Twins to be the third team in a trade) Gordon, Polanco, Gonsalves, Stewart, Jay. I think this might happen. mlbtraderumors had a bit about the Twins maybe becoming the third team in a trade to get a pre-arb player back. We'll see. But if they do that, I expect one of those five players would be the piece. Throw ins (guys another team would probably hope to nab b/c of a plus tool but not the centerpiece) - Meyer, Walker, Palka, Chargois. Lottery tickets.
  22. I'm pretty sure that Kiriloff isn't the first ball player whose father was a big help in him learning to hit. I believe most have obtained top end coaching before even being drafted. I'm also pretty sure that the Twins looked into his background and aren't worried about his coachability. As for the knock on his religion, I don't see it. The Twins have plenty of players who are pretty open about their faith - Gibson, Dozier. I don't see how his will negatively affect him. Lastly, there seems to be some confusion between what stats show and what best player means. While it's nice that a 22 year old 10th round pick is crushing A ball, it's not really relevant. Kiriloff has a long way to go but he's looking good so far.
