  2. I'm not sure Polanco is as valuable on the trade market as we think. The jury is still out on his ability to play short. He's a good player who does a lot of little things right but he doesn't do anything great. Those kind of players tend to be underrated by the market. He does have a lot of service time left so that's a big plus. But would we trade him straight up for Justus Sheffield (assuming the Yankees would)? He's #74 on mlbpipeline's list and in AA.
  3. 4 games is about the norm for an incident like this. Boyd, who also clearly threw at Sano, wasn't aiming at Sano's head and just got fined. Sano shoved the catcher and got one game. Throwing at the head and getting four days seems fair.
  4. Oh yeah, this has been a hoot and a half.
  5. Yeah, Polanco should be part of the future of this team with Buxton, Sano, Kepler and Rosario. That's a damn good nucleus on the offensive side IF Buxton develops. Throw Gordon into the mix after they move Dozier.
  6. With Stewart, unless there's a mechanical problem that different/better coaching can fix, I think you just leave him in AA and let him sink or swim. He's still young. He can repeat AA next year if needed. But we know he can pitch in the lower minors so leave him be.
  7. Ignoring some of the normal stuff on here ... Barnes was suspended four games which seems about right. Baltimore and Boston have another series starting May 1st so we will probably see something in that series.
  8. So, it looks like all 100 Senators are going to a North Korea briefing at the White House on Wed. Apparently, the White House was the location selected by the Senate to get the briefing but is not part of this? Which makes no sense. And Pence cut his pacific trip a day short. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2017/04/24/donald-trump-north-korea-mitch-mcconnell/100854560/ I don't think Trump is dumb enough to start a war but if you wanted to think he was, this would be bad news.
  9. You don't have to apologize but shouldn't make **** up, either. No one in your video hurled a 90+ fastball at someones head. It was a video full of people barking at other people, one real brawl that had nothing to do with the pitcher and one guy charge the mound where nothing happened. If you think barking after a HBP is escalation, well, yeah, baseball isn't the sport for you.
  10. "Unnecessarily violent"? That must be an eye of the beholder thing. I'm pretty sure a few of us wanted McCann to get pegged for punching Sano the other day. And your Posey example is a good example of when players do get injured - in the normal course of a game, not in a kerfuffle. (You want to use the story of the Cards third string catcher who got kicked in the head, got a concussion and retired after a real melee with the Reds even though that story is inflated to make its point).
  11. Oh, and this is Jason Turbow's always professional view on the subject. Turbow wrote a great book called, simply enough, The Baseball Codes. https://thebaseballcodes.com/2017/04/24/boston-puts-the-harm-in-charm-city-head-high-retaliation-draws-os-ire/
  12. To the first paragraph I give you: https://thebaseballcodes.com/tag/manny-machado/ I like the guy a lot but a big part of that is because he seems to be more of a throwback type player. Throwing a bat at the third baseman?! Hitting the catcher with follow through swing?! I'd never seent that before. Charging the mound?! He's fantastic. He's great for baseball. As to the second paragraph, I don't care. You aren't supposed to throw at a player's head which is why there will probably be more retaliation between the two teams - which I'm eagerly awaiting. But the anger and intensity of the rivalry makes sports more fun. Worrying about "what ifs" ruins everything. The reality is there have been only a handful of real injuries caused by purposeful HBP and the following scrum. Far more injuries happen because of field dimensions and field conditions. We as Twins fans celebrated Torii Hunter running over the White Sox catcher. It's still a big part of why we liked him and FSN used it in their Hunter package the other day. And it's a good reason why the White Sox fans still hate the Twins. By taking away players identities - not just in baseball - sports are making the games more regional - since you only root for your jersey - and blander. But real emotion - seeing players actually give a fig about something - is great for the sport.
  13. Well, there wasn't much there, really. 1) Guy gets plunked in the side, dug outs empty. 2) KC pitcher plunks Machado in the side, Machado charges the mound. Nothing major. 3) A non-pitching incident but really, really fun. 4) A Twins pitcher hitting Abreau in the side, dugouts empty, nothing happens. 5) Pitcher hits hitter in leg, hitter barks and walks to first, nothing happens. (although the managers were really into it). 6) Bumgarner strikes out Myers, both yap, nothing happens. So, that's 6 incidents only 4 of which resulted in a HBP. None were head hunting. The Machado charge is the only thing close to a real fight caused by HBP. Your constant fear of people's lives being put in danger just isn't true.
  14. So, looking at mlbpipeline's archives, Javier was #12 in his class (2015), Ynoa #17 (2014), Diaz #10 (2013) and Minier #4 (2012). They don't have a listing for 2011 but the big signing that year was Miguel Gonzalez, a pitcher. I'm not sure mlbpipeline's rankings are perfect - I was pretty sure Javier was top 10 on some lists, for example - but it's a reasonable starting point, if nothing else. I'm not sure which route is better - quantity or quality - but maybe a mix? The same year they signed Minier, they also nabbed Thorpe. While we all remember the Sano/Polanco/Kepler year, Sano was really the only big signing. Polanco and Kepler weren't in the top 20 that year in signing bonuses. While it seems Gonzalez is out of the org, Fernando Romero - who signed for a third of what Gonzalez got - is TD's #1 Twins prospect. I guess that's the long way of saying I'm not going to rip the team for signing #8 on a list instead of #7. So long as they use all their money, I'm good.
  15. I'm pretty sure both Minier and Diaz were top 10 signings and maybe Javier, too?
  16. Well, we don't know if Pedroia wasn't in on it. He probably was ok with Machado getting plunked. I'd be very surprised if he didn't know that was going to happen. A pitcher earlier in the game threw three very inside pitches on Machado with pretty solid intent to hit him. Pedroia could have spoken up then. So I'm not sure his denials on the field are worth very much. Most players make those sort of comments. My guess is that he was perfectly fine with Machado getting plunked but after seeing the ball nearly decapitate him he probably was worried about further retaliation and had to do what he did.
  17. That's how I saw it, too. But Jason Turbow of the baseball codes noted that the Red Sox players were watching the replay in the locker room after the game. They clearly thought it was dirty. And maybe it was. He did nail Pedroia in his injured knee and maybe he just faked the sincerity? Who knows. I love this ****.
  18. Machado is another one of my favorite non-Twins. He's really, really good, of course. But he's also somewhat dirty. http://m.mlb.com/bos/video/v1309699983/bosbal-pedroia-exits-game-after-collision-at-second Honestly, I think Machedo just went in hard and accidentally spiked Pedroia but others may see it differently. The Orioles won that game but the next day the Red Sox tried to hit him and actually aimed at his head, which is a serious no-no. I was somewhat surprised that Machado didn't charge the mound but Barnes should get a fairly big penalty. If he had aimed at his body, this probably goes away but head-hunting is different, so we'll see. Machado doubled on the next pitch. http://m.mlb.com/bos/video/v1315785283/bosbal-barnes-ejected-after-throwing-at-machado/?team_id=111 (Levi, let this one go).
  19. I guess? I'm honestly not as up on the changes in the new agreement but I think that's more or less right.
  20. Yep
  21. I think if Dozier goes, Polanco slides to second and Gordon comes up from AA (if he's still got a .800 OPS). And didn't they sign some vet UI guy who is on the DL right now who could also take Escobar's role?
  22. So what? We've already had the "players used greenies" excuse in this thread and now you've added the "there were steroids in the 70s" excuse. I think you're next excuse is "there's no evidence Bond used" or "steroids don't make you hit the ball better" excuse. It gets old. Sure, some players used in the 70s. It wasn't the epidemic it was in the Selig era nor did it create an unlevel playing field.
  23. Diehard has it right. Santiago, Santana, and Dozier will probably be moved (in that order) and Escobar, Kintzler, Belisle and maybe even Giminez might get something (Giminez would be moved to make room for Garver).
  24. Probably, but that wasn't the issue. I merely corrected you that he would have to wait 3 years before being drafted again.
  25. Both Nix and Aiken had commitments to major colleges - UCLA - and broke those commitments. A HS kid with talent like Nix and Aiken and Groome and Greene can (and should) try and re-enter the draft the next year.
