  1. Yep, I'm on the Wright train, too. It's ok if we don't get the best player out of this draft. But a bust would really hurt. Wright's a safe pick who still has tremendous upside. We can pick one of the many high upside HS pitchers at 35/37. Someone will fall.
  2. Two points, first, didn't the pool thing change in 2012, not 2010? If so, you're basically making an arbitrary starting point for the year after the Twins signed Sano. That seems a bit unfair, especially if you are alluding to the Twins having a larger than most signing pool. Second, do we actually have a comparison of hauls over any time period? Be it 2010 - forward or 2012 - forward? Seems to me that most of the players signed in 2012 or 2013 might only be at high A right now. For example, Eloy Jimenez, the #1 guy from 2013 and a top 20 prospect overall is still only in A+.
  3. Let me re-phrase, if the Twins draft him, he'll sign. But I suspect that Boras has been working very hard to get a good deal for Romero that is more in line with his talent level than his draft location and might be telling teams that Romero wants X-amount. Arguably some team, maybe the Nats, agrees and plans to nab him in the second round for above slot $. The Twins might not want to spend that high so they could A) pass B - draft him and pay X or C) draft him and tell him to eat the medicine and sign him for what the Twins want to pay. Option C applies to basically every player in the draft. If you draft Faedo and offer him 1m less than he expected/informed you he'd sign for, he probably still signs but it would affect your relationship going forward. That's why teams tend not to do option C.
  4. I'd like to see him rest more against lefties but Brock is right - he's cut down his k-rate and his babip is below his career averages. It's too early to give up on him and I don't think we have a guy who is ready to replace him anyway.
  5. Nice. I was looking at fangraphs sortable draft list and wondered if you knew how the Twins felt about three college arms slated for the 30s - Will Crowe, Tanner Houck and Alex Lange. Also, Seth Romero is represented by Boras which might make him a tougher sign than expected. I think I'm hoping for a draft of Wright, Clarke and Crowe or such but would be very happy if a college arm started to fall, like Dakota Hudson did last year.
  6. Cueto is owed about 85m over the next four years - after his one. Seems like if we trade for him, it might hamper our ability to sign Machado as a free agent.
  7. Movies - Avatar, the Matrix movies, American Beauty, Hurt Locker, Interstellar ... TV - Walking Dead, Mad Men Music - I have no idea what kids listen to these days. There's lots of crappy music on but I have no idea who signs it. Probably Justin Bieber. I'm old.
  8. He seems to be on a pretty good role - his last 18 starts in 2016 were pretty impressive - 116ip, 2.41 era, 100k, 32bb.
  9. Considering how this board has reacted to trading off Ramos and Hu in former win-now trades on teams that were actually supposed to be in contention, I'm not sure we'd be all that tolerant of any trade.
  10. I think it's unlikely that the new FO will make a big trade in-season. I think they are more likely to sit and see - possibly extend Santiago. They weren't in on Fister, who wouldn't have cost us a prospect.
  11. This is true but it's also not really relevant. The fact that he's stranded 90% of baserunners in 10 starts this year doesn't mean he's going to let 50% of them score in his next 10 starts to even it out. We've said for about a month now that he can't maintain these numbers, yet he did for a month. He's been amazing for the 10 starts (not counting his hot streak to end last year). His next 10 probably won't be as good (it would be very hard to do that) but it doesn't mean he has to be equally bad in his next 10 to even out or such. I think it's fair to say he's having a career year. He'd need to avg about 5.5ip/start for the remained of the year at a 4.50 era to equal last years numbers. Maybe that's what happens but I'd bet he's better than that.
  12. I'm sure they are. There are some rules against it that everyone breaks esp with regard to HS players. The Phillies a few years ago killed NCAA eligibility for a few of their drafted kids who didn't sign by telling the NCAA that the players worked with an adviser and I believe the Astros threatened to do the same to Aiken although everyone in the world knew he had an agent. http://deadspin.com/report-the-phillies-ratted-out-two-draft-picks-to-the-1526769641
  13. The Twins have taken five HS pitchers in the first 10 rounds in the Stiel period - Berrios, Stewart, Gonsalves, Moran and Balazovic. Stewart is the only one that you can say is disappointing at this point. Both Berrios and Gonsalves have so far exceeded expectations and Moran and Balazovic are so raw, it's really not worth worrying about yet.
  14. I think, and the draft will show us, that Preller, the SD GM, has made it clear to Greene and his adviser that SD will go over slot to sign him. That way it would make sense for him to shut down early. My guess is that he still gets the largest signing bonus in this draft class.
  15. Well, I mean, sure. Yvonne Strahovski 'should' marry me - my wife would totally be ok with it. But it doesn't seem realistic.
  16. The only international signings they did - where the international pool wasn't a factor - were the Nishoki and Park signings (and one Japanese pitcher that the A's outbid us on). Those were both very modest investments. They've never been on the Cuban free agents, regardless of whether or nor a tax hit would factor in. I just don't see the point of bringing this up after every signing. We're not going to outbid other teams. We've never done it. The only exception was Sano when a bunch of stuff broke right for us and it was a relatively small amount.
  17. Look, the Twins used their entire international payroll. It's a probably a bridge too far to expect the Pohlads to spend millions of dollars above the pool to the point that they'd get taxed. And the Twins aren't going to compete for the Yu Darvish's of the world either. Complaining about use of $ is sorta fun but with this ownership group, it's probably a waste of time. It doesn't matter if the GM is Lavine, Ryan or Smith, we aren't going to bust our budgets.
  18. I'm ok trading Escobar if the right deal comes along but until then, he's a solid bench option. When Gordon is ready to come up, Escobar isn't going to be blocking him, Dozier/Polanco is.
  19. Another article on Jordon Adell - http://www.courier-journal.com/story/sports/preps/kentucky/2017/05/21/baseball-softball-postseason-preview/331077001/ Guy has 24 home runs in 91 at-bats.
  20. Well, hopefully Mejia and/or Gibson run with this opportunity. The broadcasters noted that the Twins were something like 15-3 when they got a quality start this year, which is a pretty solid winning percentage.
  21. I think I'm actually the opposite of you. I'm getting to the point where I'll be mildly disappointed if they don't draft a college pitcher #1. There are a lot of HS arms in this draft and some of them will fall to us at 35/37 as well. Greene has too many risks, in my opinion, and it'll take him too long to get to the majors (which, admittedly, shouldn't factor into the thinking). Wright (or McKay) seem like solid rotational arms that can be up quickly to help Berrios in a few years. And they might come cheaper than Greene which might help us later in the draft. That said, the Twins FO knows a lot more than me so if Greene is the right pick in their eyes ....
  22. Yeah, if they could get Adell at 5.5 and save 2.2 and then somehow get a guy like Faedo or Canning to drop, it makes sense. But I'm not sure they can figure that out.
  23. I loved Jar of Flies (although I suppose it was an EP and not an album) and Alice in Chains (their third album) was strong although not as good as Dirt.
  24. The Baywatch movie looks stupidly funny.
  25. Like I said, I have no idea. I know Fred Lynn wasn't the same player after he left Fenway. And Fenway is such a hitter's park that maybe it masks problems. I'm sure there are some pitchers who did pretty well in Oakland that struggle elsewhere.
