  1. I think Stewart is a lock to be drafted by some team. He's still young, throws mid 90s and it's easier to hide a pitcher in the pen all year. Why wouldn't a rebuilding team like the Padres or Phillies try that and at least see what he's got in ST? Plus those teams probably still have detailed write ups from his draft year so they'll be intrigued to see if they can 'fix' him. Interesting, it looks like other top 15 picks from the 2013 draft that weren't protected including Mark Appel (DFA'd), Phil Bickford, Trey Ball and DJ Peterson. I'm not sure what happened with Ball. I thought he'd be ok.
  2. There was a lot more evidence for Bagwell including a trainer who said he gave him and Clemens and Pettitte PEDs. What there wasn't was a (known) failed drug test (there were rumors that he was on the list of players whose results were supposed to be kept secret but never confirmation). Thome's only connection to PEDs is that he happened to play on teams that had a lot of PED users.
  3. Seems like we'll have to wait
  4. Yep, in law school trademarks class we learned about how Deere trademarked its colors. Pretty interesting case reading, as those things go.
  5. https://baseballhall.org/hof/2018-bbwaa-ballot The important new names are Andruw Jones, Chipper Jones, Hideki Matsui, Jim Thome, Johan Santana, Johnny Damon, Scott Rolen and Omar Vizquel. Each of them sorta has a HOF claim (Matsui would need some credit for Japan). And fourteen people got enough votes last year to stay on, with both Vlad and Hoffman really close to getting elected. Of the new group, Chipper should be a lock and Thome should be as well. I'd vote for Andruw Jones first ballot but it'll take him a while. Scott Rolen will eventually get in but probably not this year. I think Vizquel eventually gets in as well. The rest don't. Of the returning guys, Edgar Martinez and Fred McGriff are on their 9th ballot. McGriff won't make it and Edgar has a lot of votes to get. Moose, Schilling, Clemens, Bonds, Larry Walker, Manny, Sheffield, Kent, Wagner and Sosa are the other names, all of which were behind Martinez in voting last year. Regardless, it's quite likely that the voters put in at least 3 guys this year (Vlad, Hoffman and Chipper) and maybe even a forth (Thome). That's a solid class regardless of what the vets committee does (and they'll probably vote in at least one guy).
  6. I do think it's fair to argue that the Twins FO underestimated its chances when it moved Kintzler, for example. I like Tyler Watson but it's not like he's an elite prospect. He's probably not in our top 20. And for that, the FO saved a few bucks for ownership and ran up the white flag. I think it's fair to criticize them for that.
  7. I think there are just enough sane republicans and too many crazy ones to get some of the most evil stuff passed.
  8. I know it's a safe boring stock but we bought John Deere a couple years ago and it's been a really good stock - strongly out performing the S&P and giving back some nice dividends as well. It won't blow up in a good way like some tech stocks but it's got a pretty strong moat.
  9. https://theathletic.com/160170/2017/11/19/gammons-justin-morneau-dwight-evans-and-the-debilitating-effects-of-concussions/ It's behind a paywall but features Morneau.
  10. I think this offseason will tell us a lot about the new FO but I don't think we can give them a lot of credit for what they've done so far. Some credit, sure.
  11. You mean you don't think the Pohlad's own radio station gave the Twins much money? Shocker.
  12. Well, an extra pick is nice. Wish it had been a first rounder.
  13. Yeah, we watched the first season of Life in Pieces on netflix too. It got a lot better as the season went on.
  14. They made some other moves that were probably as important - hiring Pickler and Rowsan. Keeping Steil. Not signing vets to block Rosario or Buxton. I think I was mostly ok with what they did since they needed to learn what they had and not sell Dozier for 60 cents on the dollar.
  15. They haven't done anything yet. A bit early to say they are playing to win after they traded off a SP and a closer and waived the flag at the deadline. Right now all they've done is saved the Pohlad family 3m dollars. We'll see how/if they use it.
  16. Sounds like Atlanta is going to lose some really good prospect(s). Rosenthal wrote the story at the Atlantic but that requires a subscription so here's the mlbtraderumors link. "Previous reports have suggested that top 2016-17 signing Kevin Maitan, who received a $4.25MM signing bonus, could be among any potential losses, though it’s not yet clear which prospect(s) Atlanta stands to lose. There could be further penalties yet, however, as David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweeted earlier this morning that it seems likely that the Braves will be banned from signing any international amateurs for at least one signing period. O’Brien also noted that there’s a “good chance” the Braves will lose some prospects as punishment, while Mark Bowman of MLB.com tweeted that he’d be “surprised” if the Braves didn’t lose at least one prospect, listing Maitain, Ji-Hwan Bae and Abrahan Gutierrez as potential prospects that could be impacted." Any of these guys would be subject to the same international pool rules which is good for the Twins. Sorry to our resident Atlanta fan(s).
  17. The last episode of the first season was fantastic.
  18. As a group, I like 21-25 much better. Miranda is the only one I'd keep and I'd bring Jay, Stewart, Rortvedt and Granite down into this ranking. Miranda I'm really high on and would probably have him even higher. He's going to turn into a slugging third baseman. The rest I'm quite meh on, frankly. I like Curtiss, I think he'll end up a big part of the pen next year but he's the only one I think will do anything for the ML club. Jorge is a AAAA type in my view and I'm not sure the other two are even that good. Obviously, I hope they prove me wrong.
  19. Anyone watching this show? We just finished the first season on netflix and really, really liked it.
  20. An offer of Gordon, Romero/Gonsalves and, say, Thorpe is similar to the Sonny Gray deal. So look for pitchers that might be in that bucket. Would Pitt like to rebuild and move Cole, for instance? Mets move Degrom? Gausman from Baltimore? Any Oakland pitcher? Would Seattle do a small make over and trade an aging good pitcher for a small group of prospects? Anyhow, I think the Twins could make a deal out of those prospects and get a solid, not ace, starter.
  21. It's a cop out but let's see how the offseason shakes out. I'm not opposed to the Twins letting him DH in April and May to confirm what they have if Sano can stay at third. I like Vargas' power and think a smart manager might use him a bit like Leyland did with Monroe and bury him low in the line up to surprise opposing pitchers instead of putting him in the 5 spot. But if the Twins sign a better bat, great.
  22. Just saw a chat from Longenhagen the other day - https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/eric-longenhagen-prospects-chat-open-the-pod-bay-doors-please-trackman/ In it he says the only prospects the last few years that were better than Otani were Buxton, Lindor, Seager (Trout and Harper excluded).
