How Trevor Plouffe Became A Run Producer
Trov replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The problem you are talking about is a good problem to have, and not one the Twins have had in recent years. We have too much potential talent and do not have the space for them. The solution is to find out who is ready, who will stick in the line up, and if need be trade away some to fill other holes. The past few years players got to play, like Plouffe, because there was no one else ready, but nothing helps players produce better, in my opinion, like some competition for your job. -
TD Top Prospects: #3 Jose Berrios
Trov replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I personally get annoyed when I hear complaints about a guy because of his height. I also get annoyed when they knock him for getting guys out because he struck them out with a high fastball. I read an article that the current trend for hitters are doing better job against low fastballs, and the HR comparison between high and low pitches was very close. He sounds like a guy that will continue to work on his craft and make adjustments to what hitters are doing to him. It is important to keep the hitters guessing, and I feel this guy will do that. -
NO NO NO! Quentin is even worse that Willingham in every area of the game. Why trade for an over the hill hitter that can not stay healthy. I agree Vargas could use some work in AAA but his hot hitting was more than just September if you remember. He was striking out a lot more than walking, but he was not chasing strikes for the most part. I hope that when pitchers start trying to work his way around him he will take more walks.

I think Hicks at the plate his biggest problem is his head. I think he over thinks everything which just messes him up. I am not sure he knows what kind of player he should be. I like that he is learned to walk at a much higher rate. I think if he continues to switch hit he needs to be a Span type hitter from the left side. That being someone who will work the count and slap the ball up the middle and to left field. Won't have much power but he will stop rolling over everything too. I am not giving up on him, and think bringing in Hunter will do wonders for Hicks. Hunter was Hicks hero growing up and hope Hicks will stick to him like a sponge picking up all the tips that Hunter has.

Purchasing A Rotation, And What It Means
Trov replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You can never have too much pitching. Injuries always happen, some for just a start or two, some for much longer. Hell, baseball is starting to push toward six man rotations soon. If you do have too much starting pitching other teams will always pay to get some from you with position players. So if the free agent vets pitch like we all hope they do and May, Meyer, and any other prospect get blocked, we can use them to fill other holes we may have. Look at what Oakland gave up last year for a total of three pitchers.- 157 replies

Who Says No? Trevor Plouffe Edition
Trov replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would say no to this. It may appear Trevor has finally figured out how to play at this level on both sides of the ball. His defense improving was best thing he did last year. I was impressed with his change at the plate too. However, I would not give him a long term deal at all. Just keep doing arbitration until we know what we have in Sano and Trevor can be traded any time. I also am worried last year was more of a fluke than the norm for him. Also, since it took until he was 28 to get to starter value, I bet he regresses very quickly and really only has 2 more years of starter value left in him. -
It is very close for me. I love his defense, but unless he grows his offense he will become a liability. Yes, he did well overall, however, look at the second half of the season when pitchers learned to never throw a fastball inside on him. I find it funny that people get all on the lefties for having to hit the other way, but guys like Dozier who are right handed there is no big push them to hit the other way. Dozier pulls the ball as much as anyone on the team and he loves the high inside fastball. I am in the camp wait another year see if he develops and then just do a 5 year for little bit more money if need be.

On Twins Pitching and Philosophy
Trov replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Love this article. I have been talking about this for some time now. I think Paul is the type he will look into these stats and get a guy that will coach them. Pitching is about keeping guys off balance. If the hitter knows each pitch will be knee high they will crush it. The leaving pitch up stuff to me is stay away from upper thigh to waist, work the four corners of the zone and mix it up that will be effective.- 34 replies

I don't think the Twins have a chance to hire him, but if he would come here I would love it. He built a winner in Tampa Bay with no budget. I love his style telling his switch hitters to bat right handed against a right hander that has a killer cutter and dominates lefties. He was one of the first to start to shift infield around. He will get a job I think where ever he wants one when there is an opening.

I would be okay with Molitor, but still think Doug would be the better choice. The only reason why I think that he has worked day to day with many of the new top guys over the last couple of years and knows them better than anyone. Also, he will be a blast to watch, when he fights the other manager, or will find that rights spot to sit on the floor of the dugout because it is lucky. If Molitor does get it over Doug I hope they bring Doug in to be a bench coach or base coach for the team. I think Molitor will be a nice change. From what I have heard it was him who started to get the 1980's style manager of Gardy to wake up and learn it was 2014. I think Molitor will use all the new stats and be much more of a Joe Madden type manager who can get the most out of players and not just follow the old rules of baseball, like always need opposite handed hitters for best match ups. I think Molitor will get the job though, but I will expect much more platooning and a lot more running as well.

I think the key to what this shows the hard work that is needed, and how every moment you are either getting better or worse. As a coach of baseball myself I get so upset when I see players who are screwing around warming up, instead of working on their game. Gordon gets it. Truth be told I have not seen the Twins closely, but with the mentality of Arcia, that has the chicks dig the long ball mind set, I would not believe defense is top on his mind. I think this is a very important time in the franchise. We need to find the coaching staff that will teach the kids, and change the culture of the Twins. The article, or a comment maybe, mentioned we are a pitch to contact staff, which is true, but hopefully we change that moving forward, and appears to be in the right step with Hughes. The coaching staff should hopefully keep them going in that direction, Ryan seems to be adopting more of power pitching over pitching to contact with recent signings, trades, and drafts. Pitching and defense is the key to winning games.

2014 Post-Mortem: Trevor Plouffe
Trov replied to stringer bell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think who becomes manager might have an impact on Plouffe's future. I could see being possible extra outfield and 3b. I would like to see more Escobar at 3b with Santana settling in at SS. I could see Plouffe filling in at 3b when either is hurt or needs rest, and going to OF when facing lefty and Arcia needs to sit. This all depends on what trades or FA are signed and injuries as well.- 21 replies

Who is your surprise Twins Minor Leaguer?
Trov replied to DocBauer's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
For me the biggest is Santana, yes he was a top ten prospect, but his numbers at the ML level is better than anything he has put up in the minors, and he is playing a position he has not played at all in the last few years and almost not at all in his career. Not only are they better they are much much better. Highest average before ML level .297 last year, highest OBP was .343 all the way back in Dominican league, highest slugging was .426 all the way back in Dominican league too. His K-BB walk rate is what I was expecting, which he should hopefully improve, but his history does not suggest that. However, overall I was not expecting him to hit like this for this long. -
What impact might Aaron Hicks have in 2015?
Trov replied to DocBauer's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I have been a big fan of Hicks, what I think many people have not tracked in his career is how long it has taken him to learn his level. When he first started playing he looked a bust in the minors then after a long stay he finally adjusted and became the prospect he was expected to be. Last year was a complete waste of a terrible year, however, this year despite his low average, and complete loss of confidence in hitting left handed, he improved leaps and bounds at the plate over last season. He was working the count and walking a lot more. After getting sent down it gave him time to clear his head and learn what kind of player he should be, a singles doubles line drive hitter. I have watched him the last few days and his approach has been better than before. He is not trying to pull everything but looking to hit up the middle opposite field. Looking at his learning curve I would expect a respectable year next year from him. I love that he never gives up when he struggles he just keeps wanting to learn how to be better, some lessor players would have given up. -
Twins Trying To Make Oswaldo Arcia A Complete Hitter
Trov replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My main issue with Arcia is his apparent unwillingness to get away from flying open and thinking every pitch is a fastball inside. Every left handed hitter should throw nothing but breaking balls away until he stops swinging at them. Sure he is still young but this has been going on for awhile. If he wants to be dead pull he needs to look for only inside pitches and leave the away pitches alone and take them. -
My question is why must he have a better walk to K rate? It would be nice if he did yes, and most likely will, but he puts balls in play and a lot have been for hits. If he was hitting around .225 and had that same K rate then I would say larger issue. Is he in the line up to walk, or hit and drive in runs?

I hope they have to sign Nix and honor the deal they offered him. Unless that deal was 100% contingent on the signing of Aiken to a lower deal. I think it is BS they can offer him a deal, he accepts, passes his physical and then because Aiken will not take less money, back out of the deal to Nix.
-
A deal at this time of year would make little to no sense. What could be received in return would be much higher in the off season because any player on the 40 man rosters have to clear waivers to be traded. I would only be willing to trade him for a ML ready guys. I am always willing to see what is out there, but I do not see a clear replacement ready right now. He is a top notch fielder and is a threat with the bat. I do feel some overrate him, but on a good team he would be a solid 7-9 hitter, not a 2-3 like he has been.

Bunting... Develop the next Brett Butler
Trov replied to alskntwnsfn's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I could not agree more bunting should be a bigger part of the game. However, it is not like the Twins are the only team not bunting for hits these days. It is league wide, and really relates back to when the players are much younger and either never learned how to bunt, or because we live in the era where every player wants to hit the long ball. Bunting needs to start at a young age, because will only get harder as they get older, but the players that make it to the majors normally are the best hitters on their teams and will not normally bunt because they are hitting in the three hole. I do not believe this is the Twins not teaching it so much, but in some cases the players not willing to do it. I hear every year about how Carew coming in to teach certain players how to bunt for hits, and yet they still do not do it during the year. As for the pregame approach that still comes down to the player ultimately. The coaches can tell them do things but the player needs to decide to do it. I remember hearing about edgar martinez for the Seattle hitting a third of the balls to each field. Think too many of the Twins doing that or even wanting to? Yes, the coaching staff, which I do not like on the Twins, needs to enforce the bunting in some players more, but the players need to be committed to it more too. -
I would not be worried about his power at the league he in. It is not a power league. I am not worried about the kid at all. He is still young and may finally be healthy and figuring it out. Hopefully he goes to AFL and continues to grow and start at AA next year. Overall, the farm system is looking strong, unlike the past few years. We are starting to have more potential prospects then positions to play them at. That is a good problem to have, because not all will pan out, and some can be traded if need be to fill other holes. Surprised by Levi, I had written him off completely after having a third year at Hi A, but maybe he finally figured it out. I still put him as a utility guy at best, but they are important to.

Twins Minor league Report (8/13): Buxton Suffers Concussion
Trov replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Here is hoping Buxton will bounce back fully. I would expect him to take the rest of the season off and start off fresh next year. Hopefully the concussion does not turn into a lingering problem, but many other players have had bad collisions with concussions and made good returns.- 22 replies

I agree, what I like best is the effort and intelligence they played with. Neither were top athletes compared to Hunter or Jones and the like, but they did the best with what they had and worked hard. Normally those are the best type of coaches the ones that had to learn how to do well, not a just a given talent. I would love if Doug was next MLB manager, but having him teach the young guys is helpful too. He and Chad will teach them to always hustle.

Josh Willingham Traded To Royals for Minor League Pitcher
Trov replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The moves TR is making is reminding me of the late 90's moves he made that helped bring a nice run of years, all be it no world series rings. Trading away vets for young fringe prospects. Remember trading Roberto Kelly for Mays, or Dave Hollins for Ortiz. We are stock piling pitching prospects throughout the system, which can always be traded for position players in the future if needed, but really are needed for the depth because it seems no starter can go a year without missing at least a week here or there. -
I think the philosophy of hitting the opposite field should be that they have the ability, but should not be mandated to HR power guys. I think knowing when you should look for an outside pitch and drive it to the other field is an important skill. It can also teach to stay back on fastballs so you are not so out in front of off-speed pitches. I would hope they are more so teaching players to have a plan at the plate and know how the pitchers are pitching them and adjust. Also, teaching to hit other way teaches hitters to keep hips closed long which typcially will increase power and the ability to reach other pitches. I do agree though that trying to mess with a guys swing who has performed well at all levels before they even face major league pitching is a mistake. Some players need to have the see ball hit ball approach.
