  1. I expect he and Mr Boras wouldn’t have given any discounts no matter how the Cubs acted.
  2. I can’t be very impressed with an organization that finds itself far out of the race on Sept 1st, but who call up Matt Belisle, Chris Gimenez, and waiver wire fodder when rosters expand. Fine job of adding talent, Misters Falvey and Levine.
  3. And Mauer only playing one position...and part time at that... immediately throws a monkey wrench into your plan.
  4. Well, maybe so but that's another argument. He is a starting pitcher, so he shouldn't be kept in the game too long.
  5. LaMarre started games April 5, 10, 21, 23, 24, and 26 April, and 4, 5 May, and appeared in about as many as a sub. If you ask me, that's too many, not too few. I have to push back here...I don't want a manager who plays Ryan LaMarre over Byron Buxton in April or May, based on a handful of spring training ABs and a couple ground ball singles to right. I guess we'll have to disagree on this, Bri.
  6. Maybe he shouldn't. Or maybe he should never, or rarely, start the 6th inning. Opponent's OPS by inning, 2018: 1st .633 2nd .664 3rd .601 4th .754 5th .901 6th 1.270 https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=odorija01&year=2018&t=p He struggles the third time through the order. A team supposedly embracing analytics might notice things like this. A good manager wouldn't even need analytics to notice this.
  7. Those were the first outs Odorizzi recorded past the 6th inning this year, IIRC. He’s not improving. He struggles third time, this is factual and incontrovertible. And this is about Molitor, in any case, and his dogged determination to squeeze more from his starter than is smart, or even helpful, since he routinely ends up using his bullpen in the inning in question anyway. As he did today. Only it’s with trouble abrew, or a lead gone, or a winnable game made not winnable.
  8. Absolutely. He struggled through the 4th, he struggles 3rd time through the order.
  9. He pulled him before the damage? The two consecutive walks weren't damage? More to the issue...What's the point in sending him out for the 6th? To save the bullpen? He used it anyway, predictably. It's not just Odorizzi. Molitor has a prolonged history of waiting until the starter loses a lead before removing him. I find that incredibly maddening, and it's not just today. I realize this season is lost, but he does this when it matters.
  10. And that part, I admit, I have zero clue on. But unless it's bad, if I'm GM, I go hard after him. The Twins need impact bats. Stat. Similar in my mind to Adrian Beltre coming off his Seattle deal.
  11. There's no way Donaldson is getting a 4 yr deal. He's a real risk. But that's exactly why the Twins would be able to sign him, and it's exactly the type of player they need to target. They're not getting Machado, let's be realistic. Standing pat is no answer, and they can't just bring in a couple minor league free agents and let them battle for the last roster spot. They need significant upgrades at several places in the lineup. They might as well take risks that have a chance of being significant. A healthy Donaldson, and a return to form from Sano, and suddenly your lineup looks a lot different.
  12. I hope to heck the Twins aren't making decisions about 2019 based on Lewis and Arraez. I hope they're not even leaving room for Gordon. That's not how you build a winner. If/when any of those three earn a place, it's not difficult to find room, and that's how it should be done. Make them earn a spot, then worry about finding room. Too many good players has never, ever been a problem. Holding open a spot for someone in the minors, however, is how you end up with too few good players, and that's always a problem.
  13. Today's game is an example of Molitor's awful and never ending pitching mis-managing. Odorizzi has a history of struggling if you leave him in too long. Every person on the planet knows this. Odorizzi struggles to get through the fifth, but with the middle of the order up in the 6th, Molitor runs Odorizzi out. Two walks later, he's pulled, Busenitz gives up 3 run jack, lead gone. Sending Odorizzi out for the 6th was just dumb. His chances of getting through that inning were so small, it's just not worth the risk, and sure enough, he not only has to use his bullpen anyway, but now the lead is gone. This happens regularly with Molitor. Wait till the easily anticipated damage is done, then remove starter. Starter loses game early, it's on the starter. Starter loses game later, it's on the manager. And he never changes.
  14. If Sano can play 3rd, he can play first. True about him being a wild card though. It's a card the Twins are going to play for at least another couple years, though, come what may.
  15. Donaldson has been hurt, which is attractive to me in terms of reducing salary demands next year. My thinking is, Sano is going to move off 3rd soon, might as well bite the bullet and get it over with.
  16. 86% is extremely misleading. Mauer has started 67 games at first base this year. 67. Another 26 at DH. Even when healthy, he gets one game per series off from first base. And I certainly don't know the chances he spends time on the DL again next year, but they're not insignificant. He'll be in his mid 30s with a history of concussions, leg problems, and back problems. Keeping him around means you need someone else who can play first base, which limits the possibilies for the other two bench spots. Or means you spend a lot of time with weak position players, like ending up with Ehire Adrianza making starts at first base and the outfield. Not to mention...I'd like to see more out of 1b/DH than a .727 OPS with zero power. The simple truth is, you have to make excuses for Mauer to keep him on the roster. I had too much of that in the TR days. That's how you end with with Jason Tyner at DH.
  17. I'd sign Josh Donaldson for third, and Sano is my first baseman (hopefully for the next decade).
  18. In the age of 12 and 13 man staffs, carrying two 1B/DHs, who only 1B/DH, necessarily causes a roster crunch. And if you try to platoon them, it only gets worse.
  19. If you wish to watch Mauer's career a little longer, see him move closer to Puckett on the all time Twins hit list, pretend that 90 games of his defense at 1b are actually valuable, and wax nostalgic on that 2009 season, then by all means, sign Mauer. If you want to see the Twins compete at the highest levels, then it's time to move on and find a real answer who can be an asset in 2019 and beyond. "He doesn't really hurt us" and "he takes good ABs" are the best anyone's come up with so far in this thread. There's your answer.
  20. If you have the game recorded, go back and watch how many strikes Garver lost for Gibson. Virtually every pitch at the knees, he would drag his glove down to the dirt as he caught the ball. Pitch called "ball 1" instead of "strike 1."
  21. Really, really good in comparison to all baseball players, world wide, professional and amateur, sure. Which is fine, but if you want a winning MLB team, really really good in comparison to other MLB players is the relevant standard. I also am skeptical that the business side of baseball very often prevents guys who are really good from getting to the big leagues. At least not for long, and those guys are usually young players whose MLB career is delayed for monetary and control reasons, not MiLB contract reasons.
  22. You forgot to add Carew’s OPS+. Carew 137, Mauer 125. And I don’t know what relative age has to do with it.
  23. "Austin powers"...somebody is stealing my material.
