  1. And in the days of 12 and 13 man pitching staffs, by definition a part time, one position player causes an even shorter bench, with impact elsewhere.
  2. Well, that's true, as far as it goes. -0.4 dWAR. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mauerjo01.shtml
  3. He isn't at first base at least twice a week.
  4. Not addressed to me, but I'll take a shot. The Fangraphs page in post 66 lists Mauer with 1 DRS, which ranks 12th among qualified first baseman. The same page shows him with 2.1 UZR, which ranks 8th among qualified first baseman. He does move up to 4th in UZR/150, but of course nobody pays much attention to UZR/150. Which, in Mauer's case, makes even more sense since Mauer has played 150 games in a season only once in his career, and this season is in the 60's for games started at first base. Personally, I think Mauer is a very good first baseman, with my only complaint his slowness at starting double plays. He hesitates, but that's a minor, minor thing. The problems, though, are the value of defense at first base is somewhat questionable, and he doesn't play enough to make full use of the value if it indeed is there. I
  5. No, it's not about one PA. It's about the mindset of playing for one run early in ANY ballgame. This was just an example.
  6. You’re happy with a sac bunt in the 4th inning? From the middle of the order no less? Not me.
  7. Chief wasn't young at the tail end of Killebrew and Oliva's career. j/k. I understand sentimentality, and everyone is certainly entitled to be a fan in their own way. I just don't share it a whole lot. I cheer for the name on the front of the jersey a whole lot more than the name on the back.
  8. I'm glad Molitor pulled Stewart, and I hope he develops a habit of pulling his starter before major damage, rather than after. In this case, as noted above, he probably let Stewart go one hitter too long. One of my primary beefs with Molitor is his tendancy to let his starters go too long. That goes for all of them, rookie or old vet alike. An old adage I believe in strongly: Starting pitcher loses the game early, that's on the pitcher. Starter loses the game late, that's on the manager.
  9. Not to mention, he's not all that likely to have a .750-.780 OPS (he's not there currently) and "that defense" comes with the caveat it's at first base, and it's part time. Mauer started his 64th game at first base last night (game 127 for the Twins). IMO he obviously belongs in the Twins HOF, and in MLB's "Hall of Very Good." He had a very good first half of his career, but he's no longer a very good player. I think it's time for the Twins to move on. Personally, I don't watch sport for sentimentality. I want to watch the Twins win 100 games, and win a World Series.
  10. You "get the confusion?" How would throwing the ball to second allow the run to score? If Garver was indeed smart enough to wonder if the pitcher was covering home--which seems pretty generous--a quick glance towards the plate before a throw to second was all it would have taken to confirm what he should have already known. The runner started back to second from third. The runner who was on third was all the way back to third. The Twins can't execute a throw to second, and back to home, in the time it would take the runner on third to go from standing on third all the way to the plate? There's zero excuse for getting no outs in that situation, and by all rights they should have gotten at least two, given the 2 trail runner's decisions to retreat 90 ft while one of our defenders held the ball near third base.
  11. Not entirely, no. But a tendency to leave his starter in until after the damage is done, coupled with questionable bullpen management surely have at least some impact on this, no?
  12. Why are we keeping someone with a C grade? Are we aiming for .500? Is that the goal?
  13. Of the six responses in the article itself, I think it's telling that none go out of their way to praise a single thing about him. "Managers get too much credit/blame" is about the best anyone can come up with as a defense. That, in and of itself, should tell you Molitor needs to go. "Well, yeah, but how much impact does he really have" is not a defense. It's a rationalization. His pitching decisions are questionable...everyone agrees. The Twins are among the worst fundamental MLB teams you'll ever see...everyone agrees. Questionable baserunning decisions seemingly two or three times a week...everyone agrees. Boneheaded decisions on defense, such as Rosario's weekly throw to the wrong base...everyone agrees. I could go on. All of those come back to, at some level, the manager. We might not see the clubhouse stuff, but we sure see the on-field stuff. Are the Twins trying to be world class, or not? Is Molitor a world class MLB manager, or not? Not one person here has said he's a great manager. Not even said he's a good manager. Sometimes the answers are simple if you just accept them.
  14. 10th in the American League in ERA. 2 spots better than 2017. 5 spots better than 2016. The same as 2015.
  15. I have stated repeatedly that I think it was a mistake for the Twins to sell off the 2018 season.
  16. Did you, or the Twins front office, know during the last week of July what Cleveland's record would be over the next three weeks? Do you know, today, what Cleveland's record will be through the end of the season?
  17. I think Austin is indeed a nice find, and has a good chance to be valuable as a lefty masher for several years.
  18. I think you keep Gibson, and try to contend in 2019. If needed, he can be dealt next July for probably the same price.
  19. I'd love to see Stewart in relief before year's end. It's fairly evident the stuff doesn't play as a starter. Concur.
  20. The HR was nice...notable for its rarity.
  21. They'd get nothing for him, but they should sign him to play second base next year?
  22. Well, yes, but the cost will be higher, since he's now cheaper for the trading team.
