  1. Hildy is “a very good set-up man or middle reliever?” How? If his stuff doesn’t miss bats enough, and he doesn’t throw enough strikes, those are problems no matter which inning he pitches.
  2. Spot on, and don’t forget those September position players include such future all stars as Chris Gimenez, Logan Forsythe, and Gregorio Petit.
  3. I’m confused by your last paragraph. How were the Twins hurt in any way by spending “too much” on Lynn? Why would the Twins be “devastated” had they signed a long term contract? Since you advocate never signing such deals, the money will simply stay with ownership. If the options are potentially waste money on a player, or absolutely spend less on payroll, I don’t see the benefit baseball-wise to lower payroll.
  4. In general, every team should be trying to improve every area over the winter. Standing still is how you get passed. In the case of the Twins, I don't agree the Twins "have the bump covered." None of Stewart/Gonsalves/Littell should be counted on for a single productive MLB inning. Same for Pineda. They'll all likely get a chance to prove themselves, because a team doesn't just use 5 starters, but they should all be fallback options, not primary ones. I hope the Twins are looking to add, at the TOP of the rotation, at least one starter.
  5. I could live with that. Morton over Keuchel. Big fan of signing Donaldson and crossing our fingers he turns up healthy. He could end up a bust, or the best signing of the winter. Might as well take a shot at greatness if you’re the Twins. A couple middling FAs won’t do it.
  6. They need to add talent (not just potential, but actual MLB talent), lots of it, and get Sano and Buxton to magically turn into the 1.000 OPS beasts we were hoping for.
  7. So then I would say the idea has nothing to do with “openers.” You could do that regardless. Or not do it.
  8. Nobody can guarantee Trout would come up. But as a manager, I can guarantee Trout will get five PAs instead of four before other hitters do. Or vice versa, by moving him down in the lineup.
  9. You could do the same no matter the opposing pitcher, no?
  10. I had the same theory when my kids reached 15 and wanted to start driving cars. I didn’t teach them, or have them practice. I was worried they’d over think it.
  11. 1. You’re completely missing the point in paragraph one. Of course Bobby Wilson might be the last out batting ninth, but there’s nothing you can do about that. He’s batting ninth because he has to bat somewhere, and the lineup is nine batters long. We’re talking about Bobby Wilson making the last out batting third, with your best hittergetting one less AB than him. 2. OK. Do Berrios and Gibson struggle as much, third time through the order? Is it perilous to try to get more than 15-18 outs from them? If so, maybe you do it then too.
  12. “Playing hurt” is always a tough call. First off, few players are 100 percent physically during much of an MLB season. So most everyone plays at some level below 100 percent at points during a season. Then, It’s often really hard to know when someone is hurt, or just sore from the grind. If hurt, how hurt? Will they make it worse by playing? You might decide that 90 percent of a given player is better than 100 percent of his replacement. You might need that replacement player at another position anyway, because he’s subbing for someone in worse shape, so the guy at 90 percent HAS to play. It’s not as simple as “Don’t play Dozier with a sore knee.” Obviously there’s a point where you should DL him, but often these situations aren’t as black and white as we like to imagine them. Players have to play, or they’re worthless. And replacements don’t grow on trees, nor are they usually good as the player they are replacing.
  13. Sano...woof. I know it’s the first game back, but sheesh. He looked awful, against a mediocre lefty to boot. And he had multiple pitches that were very hittable.
  14. If the manager bats Mike Trout fifth, I’ve won. He might not come up to hit in a close game in the ninth. Can you imagine the firestorm from the press and fans if the last out is made in a one run game with Mike Trout in the dugout because he’s hitting fifth? I’d be willing to bet no manager is ever going to move any of his top hitters down out of the first inning. I guess I don’t understand the vitriol this idea is encountering. We asked for more forward thinking front office and manager. I certainly have issues with the front office, but i see no downside to trying this out, and it could potentially be a way to squeeze a few extra drops out of whatever pitching staff you have, good or bad.
  15. Possibly, but their is little evidence to review on what the injury/fatigue impact would be of spreading 180 IP over 60 games instead of 30. I'm guessing teams would be reluctant to try it out simply for fear of the "unknown." In the case of the "opener/secondary" pitchers aren't really changing usage patterns.
  16. A win at Maryland would be huge.
  17. It was on one of the BTN alternate channels.
  18. Tom...don’t forget the routine DP ball to third, where nobody bothered to cover 2b. Instead of ending the inning, that left runners on 2nd and 3rd. And of course there was a 2 run double from Gordon that followed, but that’s not the point. This team is terrible at baseball. Has been in the entire Molitor era. Talent can’t be pulled from thin air, but it’s Molitor’s job to get his players to play the game well. And they do NOT play the game well. That was really awful last night. Worse than you should see in MLB, and it is commonplace for this team. Start the repairs with the manager.
