    so how do they acquire on "that side of the ball"? And how do they justify using trade assets instead of money, if they can find a trade partner? The team has clear needs. They haven't addressed them, IMO, and I doubt they can.

    by their own parameters, they failed. They need impact pitching, they stated they would pursue it, impact pitching was available, and they didn't get any for nothing but money. Money that was available. They can perhaps trade for pitching, but impact pitching will be difficult to get, and extremely costly to their other stated goal of "sustained contention." So yes. They needed to get one or more of the larger than normal group of FA impact pitchers. It's a failed offseason, by definition. Adding Donaldson would be a great move, and I hope they do, but it won't mean the offseason wasnt a failure. Just less so.

    Concur on paragraphs 1 and 2. But IMO even signing Donaldson, or trading for a starter cant rescue this off season. Better, for sure, but they've already failed.

    The Pohlads didn't put a penny into the building of Target Field. They borrowed the money (from their own banks, earning interest), and are using revenues from Target Field to pay off the debt. That's the reason they haven't come close to "50 percent of revenue to payroll," and explains why the operating expenses doubled when they moved from the dome. The actually made money (from the interest on the loans to themselves), rather than helped pay for Target FIeld.

    And for the record, Hill had UCL surgery on his left elbow in October. The most likely result, IMO, is he doesn't pitch at all.

    not sure where musk21 got this info, but this was posted earlier in this thread. 9.5 in incentives, if this is accurate, for 75 IP.

    MLBTRADRUMORS has it as $3m guaranteed, with $9.5m in incentives, capping at $12.5m at 75 IP.

    not to mention, it seems to me if the Royals took "a bad farm system and made it worse", at the cost of winning a WS, that's a pretty neat trick. What good would it have done them to keep "a bad farm system" intact?

    Stop thinking that signing a FA or 3 will somehow make it impossible to compete in the future. It wouldnt. Or, At the very least, think of it this way: there's zero difference between the Twins wasting $20m in 2023 on a guy who is no longer productive, and wasting $20m in 2020 by putting it in Pohlads pocket.

    among the problems I have with this...your numbers appear to be pulled from thin air. Another, there is zero guarantee "not going for it" today means you'll be in the playoffs tomorrow. And going for it today, certainly doesn't mean you won't be good tomorrow. For one thing, predicting baseball for the current season is difficult...trying to decide who will be good in 2022 is impossible. For another, we know from their own statements the twins dont carry forward unused payroll. So not using money this year on a quality FA starter (a decision you scolded us for complaining about just last week) has little to no effect on future years. The money is gone.

    Stewart, Gonsalves, and Romero...its ironic you bring them up, since a couple years ago they'd have been the ones being touted as the "next wave" ready to dominate by midseason. All they needed was a chance!

    Even in the extremely unlikely event any of this happens, how does that help 2020?

    Yes...good teams have reliable starters in slots 4 and 5. What they dont have is "4th" and especially "5th" starters.

    I think the trick is to NOT be the underdog. To not need an upset. That won't work all the time either, but I guarantee it'll work more often than the other way around.

    I would like to see the term "#5 starter" banned from existence. Or at least redefined to "my team's 5th best starter." As it is, people use it to mean " a starter among the worst 20 percent of MLB starters." That shouldn't be the goal of any team...having such a "5th starter." The goal should be to have 5 starters among the TOP 20 percent. Now maybe that's unrealistic, but the idea that having crappy starters is ok because they're "4th" or "5th" starters is how you end up having average to bad pitching. It's not ok to have Homer Bailey because he's "only a 5th starter." The idea is to be BETTER than the other teams. Not to mention ..as of today, Homer Bailey starts game 3, not game 5.

    great.. Except the moment the Twins "dance on the graves" of these unfortunate teams, their own "financial flexibility" disappears. Not to mention, you're operating in theoretical territory here, since the Twins have never, not once, danced on anyone's grave by taking on significant salary. Your entire argument boils down to "the Twins will win by spending significantly less than they could/should." Less than they've stated they will. My opinion..."financial flexibility" is another term for lining the Pohlad's pockets. We already know, by their own statements, they don't carry excess payroll capacity forward from one season to the next. So try again...what does this "financial flexibility" actually accomplish, besides limiting payroll?
