  1. Who could have predicted not addressing the bullpen over the winter was a very risky strategy? Trading your best reliever a terrible idea? These outcomes are at least partially the result of front office decisions. In the future I hope the front office changes tactics. A weak bullpen is difficult to maneuver around, ends up throwing away games, and erodes confidence everywhere.
  2. Wait...the author's contention is that Jeffers doesn't move his glove, and the ball, after catching it? Do I have that correct? Do not concur.
  3. I think: -the lineup is top heavy. About 2 hitters short. -the team, on the whole, runs the bases poorly. Not just slowly, although that's part, they're not good. They gain few extra bases, lose extra bases, and lose base runners too much IMO. - I still believe in RBI. Some hitters find a way to drive in runs. We're lacking in those guys.
  4. Well, for one thing, even fangraphs admits quantifiably measuring catcher defense is difficult at best. And they don't incorporate framing into their catching defense measurements. https://library.fangraphs.com/defense/catcher-defense/ So I choose to believe my eyes, and my experience...if you're routinely giving away free bases, you're not playing good catcher defense, even if you're gaining a strike or 2 per game (which I don't concede, BTW.) Or, trust fangraphs' catcher defense rankings. They might be correct. But it's not proven science. It's theoretical.
  5. If we're talking about Kirilloff for Polanco, there's no need to send down Miranda. He can get 1st base ABs against lefties, Kirilloff against righties. Both can get PH and DH opportunities on a team that is still DHing a catcher at times. Kirilloff can also get OF time. Decisions wouldn’t need to be made until Polanco returns.
  6. At least not solely his, or primarily his even. But He might be asked for input. In fact, I'd be surprised if he wasn't, at least most of the time, asked about what he'd prefer to have, for example how many pitchers, or do you want another OFer or a utility IFer. But past that, yeah, providing players is the FO's job.
  7. It's hard to dedicate 2 starters to one game consistently. That chews up 6 or 7 pitching roster spots to fill 5, and makes them unavailable the rest of the games. Can you find anyone doing this regularly, anywhere?
  8. I think if Correa were likely getting a 10 year/$300m contract he'd have gotten one last winter.
  9. You think it's clear the FO DIDN'T expect Jeffers to perform this year? They traded away Garver and Rortvedt, adding only a guy who hadn't held onto the number 1 job at his previous stop with literally zero AAA options to compete for MLB playing time. He entered the season clearly as the #1 catcher. They even gave him DH ABs. They expected him to perform. OR...they cleared the way for someone they expected to fail. Which seems more likely?
  10. For this year, We better hope he improves his hitting because his arm isn't improving, ever. Thank god Sanchez has played above expectations. As for 2023 and beyond, upgrades will be tough to find. There's pretty much nothing in next year's FA class.
  11. Right, so Why a scheduled day off? He'd only played 3 days. One at DH. Some sort of injury? OK. Covid fatigue? Maybe, I guess, but that seems unlikely, and that's not what Baldelli implied. But a previously scheduled day off? Which would have had to have been scheduled much earlier? They're not setting up a new schedule that has him resting after 3 days. So again...seems odd.
  12. The actual question is: why would Correa need a day off? He'd only played 3 games, one of which was at DH. Baldelli's quote made it sound like it was a scheduled day off. You can't change a schedule? A schedule made long ago?
  13. I couldn't disagree more. Gordon shouldn't be at SS, except in emergencies. He's not a MLB SS. He's not the worst utility player in MLB, and he's gonna be here through 2022, but I hope the Twins look to upgrade in the future. He does a lot of things...below average to way below average.
  14. Yeah, but... Arraez has 8 XBH's this season. 8. Today's slam notwithstanding, I think it's fair to say he has little to no power. That lifetime .386 OBP is starting to appear legit to me though. And the current .446 is positively dreamy.
  15. I don't know how long Luis Arraez can keep this up, but it's pretty darn amazing. I will readily admit I wasn't a big fan due to the lack of power. I thought it'd catch up to him, he'd stop drawing walks, and it'd be tough to have any value. I hope to continue being way wrong. He's just hard to keep off 1st base.
  16. If I were to guess which current Twins reliever might surprisingly turn into a real weapon, I'd go with Megill. He has, IMO, the best stuff of anyone not named Duran.
  17. I generally find national announcers don't really know the teams involved well enough to give us good insight. That was the case last night.
  18. I doubt anyone thinks Smeltzer can continue posting a 2.38 ERA and a .97 WHIP while K'ing 4 per 9. He's going to regress. But he HAS given the Twins 6 absolutely vital starts at a time when the rotation was mostly in dire need. The man deserves applause.
