Regardless if you support or question removing Bundy--and for the record I support it--IMO it was most certainly NOT a "gut level decision." I believe this was a decision made--using data and a plan to compensate for weak starting pitching--prior to the game starting. The definition of managing by spreadsheet. I don't think that's even controversial. Hell I'd argue it was a decision made before THE SEASON started.

Guardians 5, Twins 3: We've Seen This Ending Before
USAFChief replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We'd all like 20 year old Bert Blyleven to show up and throw 280 innings with a sub-3 ERA. But that's not happening. In a general sense, I think the Twins have clearly decided that since they don't have and can't afford 200+ inning starters who can get people out the 3rd time through the order, they can get close to that level of run prevention from weaker starters if they just limit the exposure of those starters. Twice through the order and start looking for a convenient spot to take him out. It's actually been fairly successful. However...the companion to fewer and fewer innings from starters HAS to be a stronger, deeper bullpen. There are no low leverage guys, no room for "long relief" which nobody uses any more anyway because if someone is good enough for 3 or 4 inning stretches they'd be in the rotation, and using up a pen spot on a guy who's only available every 4th or 5th day is hard to work around when you need 3 guys minimum every night. And just like shortening starts gives lesser starters a chance to keep runs down, 1 inning stints from your relievers is clearly the way to maximize their effectiveness. So that's what everyone does. And again in general, I like that Baldelli generally takes starters out BEFORE they cough up a big inning rather than after (like Molitor was apt to do). In specifically this game, there is zero reason he should have asked for more from Archer. I'd argue he shouldn't have come out for the 4th, and wouldn't have if the pen wasn't so spent. In that sense Baldelli actually DID get an "extra inning" from Archer.- 103 replies

They are? To address Winder specifically, he's currently the only reasonable starter depth they have.- 103 replies

Guardians 5, Twins 3: We've Seen This Ending Before
USAFChief replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Megill actually intrigued me. But waiver wire claims can't be what you're depending on as the source of a good portion of your pen. Particularly when your starting staff strategy is to target 5 and fly guys as a way to overcome not having any horses. You're going to need 3 or more relievers every night. Often more. And they're all going to pitch important innings. There aren't any low leverage guys in the Twins model.- 103 replies

Guardians 5, Twins 3: We've Seen This Ending Before
USAFChief replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That's the same want ad that Tyler Thornburg responded to. And Cotton, Megill, Cano, Culoumbe, Hamilton and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few. Adding more from the unemployment line isn't likely to help.- 103 replies

Nope. Relievers the quality of Rogers don't just magically reappear after you dump them. "Just replace him" is ... poorly thought out. How? With who? The half dozen or more waiver wire wonders we churn through every year? That's how we got where we are. No, good bullpens aren't accidents, they don't result from "just throw enough **** against the wall and it'll work itself out." Good Relievers aren't "fungible," they aren't "the easiest thing to find at the deadline," and they aren't "unpredictable." I read over and over how smart Falvine were. Well, own it.

Pitching Coach Wes Johnson to Abruptly Leave Twins
USAFChief replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Again, interesting, since he basically said the opposite when hired. -
I know we're not allowed to question Baldelli here, and I was willing to overlook not using Duran for a 2 inning save in game one of the doubleheader, but.. Then why was he available for 2 innings in a tie game today? I don't get it.

Those of you who crowed about "roster management" when Falvine traded Rogers don't get to complain about the bullpen now. Nor do those who said the bullpen was fine because they had a good fWAR in September last year.

Whether the bullpen coughed up a 2-1 lead in the 8th, or a 9-8 lead in the 8th is irrelevant. Don't blame the offense for a weak pen. The offense handed Rocco and Pagan a one run lead with 6 outs to get. Losing that game is on the pen.

Pitching Coach Wes Johnson to Abruptly Leave Twins

All of the "better work-life situation as a college coach" takes are interesting, given Johnson told TD's own Parker Hageman the opposite when hired. -

The difference being, an employer would be obligated to pay a contract to its completion, even if they fired an employee. This is pretty shady, IYAM. I'd be surprised if money is the only issue. -
I agree on the last part. I've been saying for a long time now there are no "low leverage guys" in a bullpen.
