    I would like to see the term "#5 starter" banned from existence. Or at least redefined to "my team's 5th best starter." As it is, people use it to mean " a starter among the worst 20 percent of MLB starters." That shouldn't be the goal of any team...having such a "5th starter." The goal should be to have 5 starters among the TOP 20 percent. Now maybe that's unrealistic, but the idea that having crappy starters is ok because they're "4th" or "5th" starters is how you end up having average to bad pitching. It's not ok to have Homer Bailey because he's "only a 5th starter." The idea is to be BETTER than the other teams. Not to mention ..as of today, Homer Bailey starts game 3, not game 5.

    great.. Except the moment the Twins "dance on the graves" of these unfortunate teams, their own "financial flexibility" disappears. Not to mention, you're operating in theoretical territory here, since the Twins have never, not once, danced on anyone's grave by taking on significant salary. Your entire argument boils down to "the Twins will win by spending significantly less than they could/should." Less than they've stated they will. My opinion..."financial flexibility" is another term for lining the Pohlad's pockets. We already know, by their own statements, they don't carry excess payroll capacity forward from one season to the next. So try again...what does this "financial flexibility" actually accomplish, besides limiting payroll?

    2 to 3 of the current AA starters are going to make a "real impact" in the next couple years? When, in Twins history, was the last time that happened?

    to be fair, acting is incredibly difficult.

    If the goal is to win the fWAR/dollar spent pennant, it might work out. I'm more interested in winning the WS. BTW, How many WS has Billy Beane won?

    let's hope it wasnt a short sample size mirage. Let's hope Wes Johnson's miracle work is permanent, like we all saw with Martin Perez and his cutter.

    which WAR? This is a pretty great example of the complete, utter ridiculousness of WAR...both versions BTW. Homer Bailey had a 4.57 ERA last season, and an ERA over 6 in each of the previous three. He is not one of the 36 best starters in MLB. A "metric" that puts him there is worse than worthless.

    no, your original sample size came from your own self designed parameters of "below average revenue teams that won the WS over the last 15 years." If you truly want to examine the "history" you would look at "teams who won at least 95 games but failed in the post season, lost 2 of their 5 starters, and added strong starting pitching the next off season." Because that's what those of us who wanted to do just that are disappointed about. The Twins needed it, and they failed at it. The rest of your "sample size" is just noise. Twins revenues...noise. they have ample revenues to sign any FA on the market. Talk of revenues is just a diversionary tactic to let you talk about money, for the 1000th time. It has nothing to do with winning a WS, or the Twins strengths or weaknesses. Nor does your claimed business history, with which you attempt to browbeat other posters. That has zero relevance either. So speaking as a mod, cease and desist that tactic.

    huh? Mauer's first reported concussion was in 2013, IIRC. His "bilateral leg weakness" was in 2011.

    I didn't say it's a lie. I said the only thing we know for sure is what Bumgarner said. And that's true. Its not difficult to believe he actually did, it's also not difficult to understand why he and/or his agent would say that, even if not true.

    you're only looking at it from one angle. Nodoby doubts that Ryu has an injury filled past. That's why the 2019 NL CYA runner up went so cheaply. That's why many here preferred someone else, if they had their drothers. But the Twins absolutely need to add good starting pitching. They passed on the other options. Or the other options passed on them, if you want to be charitable. So that left Ryu. And he went for 4/$80. And his most RECENT history is 180 IP. For a team in the Twins position, that was EXTREMELY reasonable. Eminently doable. It would have potentially made a big impact, if he's healthy, and not done significant damage to the team is he isnt. This was a no brainer. There's no recovery, unless they get lucky with some lotto ticket. They can still make trades, but that should have been in addition to a FA starter, not instead of. And make no mistake, there's no guarantee they'll find a starter as good as Ryu available, and if they do, it won't be cheap.

    youre making my point for me. People here are advocating for even LESS depth in the rotation THIS year. "We didn't need an expensive FA! We have Berrios, Odo and Pineda!"
