  1. Sorry, nonconcur. How can Mathews be "ready to throw 100 pitches" when he's never done it? Not once, minors or majors. And Festa? Festa has 8 starts. Max pitches? 82. He has thrown less than 80 in 5 of the 8 starts. He hasn't gone more than 5 innings in any of the 8 starts. He had a 2 hit shutout, with 9 K's against the Cubs...and went 5 innings. Even Woods-Richardson has thrown 100 pitches ONCE this entire season. Once.
  2. Prior to the new three hitter minimum (2020), a relief pitcher had to complete one PA, or record one out, whichever came first, before he could be replaced. The manager on offense always has had the last substitution opportunity. The manager on defense waits until the pinch hitter has been announced, because the player isn't officially in the game until then.
  3. That's incorrect. https://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Pinch_hitter#:~:text=A pinch hitter may be,used again in the game. In this specific instance, they said Kepler was out of the starting lineup for injury reasons, so I don't know if he was available or not to pinch pinch hit for Farmer. But it wouldn't have been against the rules. You can pinch hit for a pinch hitter.
  4. Interesting. Julien has outhit Farmer by almost 100 points of OPS this year. Higher batting average, higher OBP, higher SLG. You can't click your heels and make that go away either.
  5. They are? Lee will likely be activated Monday. Who knows on Buxton and it doesn't sound like Correa is anywhere close.
  6. Hunter Harvey is a Kansas City Royal. And on the IL. And the trade deadline passed a month ago.
  7. Every single one of those players was available opening day. And Farmer was on the roster. I expect Lee to be activated Monday. We'll see who is gone.
  8. Well they could also just add him to the 40 man prior to Sep 1.
  9. Except for an IL stint, Farmer has been on the 26 man roster all season. He's not just filling in for injuries. At least not so far. They paid him $6M.
  10. The pen is critically short of good options, concur. So maybe don't run Jax out there Saturday up 5-0 in the 8th, and Duran up 6-0 in the 9th. Just a thought, Rocco.
  11. He pitched well. Really well. But of course the most pitches he's thrown in a game in his professional career is 92. So he's out of the game after five, and you need 4 IP from the pen, minimum, every time he pitches. Same for Festa. They don't throw innings in the minors either (105 across all of 2023, for example) so here we sit worried about innings in August. For most of our starters. I will never understand why they choose to not prepare their pitchers for the big leagues.
  12. Players on the 40 man roster on Aug 31 are postseason eligible. Plus adds for injury.
  13. That decision also prevented using Farmer for the single, solitary, lonely reason that makes any sense: now he's not available as a late game defense replacement for Julien. Worse, he's at SS--which they've steasfastly avoided all season if possible--and Castro's in the OF and you're worse defensively at 2 additional positions. Which ignores the question of why use both Jax and Duran yesterday. Not to mention: Why pitch to LH hitting regular Nootbar with 2 outs, 2 on and 1st base open, RH hitting backup catcher due up and the other catcher likely not available. So slim chance of PH.
  14. I count way more than 2 misplays by Rocco having a hand in today's debacle.
  15. Brutal. Three Rocco's in 8 days.
  16. We need another juvenile "we'd have won if Rocco had..." post from the flouncer in the recap.
  17. Thanks Rocco. Sure glad Duran threw last night. Glad you left that run on 3rd with Farmer. Which means you cant even use Farmer for his only possible reason to exist...subbing for Julien at 2nd. Glad you let Nootbar beat you with 1st base open.
  18. I can forgive a physical error a lot easier than Rocco sending Farmer up to PH.
  19. So...Rocco took the worse option intentionally?
  20. Uffda. Rocco. It's Kyle Farmer.
  21. Rocco playing 3D chess. "Y'know...if I put him in the starting lineup....I can't pinch hit him later..."
