Buxton has had slow starts throughout his career. Wondering, if playing Winter Ball would get him warmed up enough to start a new MLB season on a higher note. Seems like an easy answer. Spring Training isn't enough of an answer.

    "What's Up, Pitches?" Nice. I don't have stats to support this, but I'm guessing his lack of 2nd half success is due to the large number of pitches he seems to throw each game.

    With only 2 pitches, Duffey is a reliever. And at this point, I think that's where he belongs. Oh, there will be a couple SP positions opening some time this year. Longterm: Santana Looking good: Santiago, Mejía (hopefully) I don't have much confidence in either Gibson or Hughes. Gibson's salary is small enough that I'd be tempted to just release him, if necessary. Hughes still has THAT contract. With yesterday's start, I'd think seriously about sending him to the bullpen. Callup: Berrios and Gonsalves. I think the latter needs to be added to the 40 man, right?

Not too shabby. So again, what happened between last year and this? At the very least, they need to get a backup outfielder who's a better option than what they currently have. And if it should come to it, Max Kepler would be a solid alternative in center.

    Don't get me wrong, I like Buxton. But potential is just that, until it isn't. At the end of last season, he looked much better: relaxed, taking nice AB's and still had that stellar defense. So, what's happening this year? Overall poor hitting [changes in his approach and technique], horrendous in the clutch. Defense: That 3 hopper to the plate a couple games ago still rings in my head. What to do? That showed up in the lineup last night.... Max Kepler - CF Max seems like the calm, cool type guy who can handle the pressure. Indeed, I'd say he's already done that: good start on defense, very good start at the plate. Sadly, I didn't get a chance to see him play there yesterday. So, what's the hold up? To coin another lyric from a song written by Stephen Sondheim: Send in the clowns. Grossman and D. Santana are the only other OF's on the team. Gotta do much better than that. I have no clue on what it'll take to get Buxton straightened out. He's still only 23, but has had 515 PA's. I'm a patient guy. But then reality kicks in. New Manager??

    Well, if you maintained a pitching staff of more than mediocre pitchers, you'd probably never heard of "pitch to contact". The Twins move towards more "dominant fastball" pitchers had an uninspiring start. Terry seemed to go overboard on that. There are a group of younger pitchers that seem to have the right stuff, if lacking control. Anyway, there are instances in games where "pitch to contact" is still a good strategy. Just not every single AB.

    So, when did we stop calling a sinker a sinker? James Shields has been well known for his sinker. Not one single time did Dick or Bert say sinker. ARGH! The namby pamby world we live in ;-) ahem, that being said...... Right now, Ervin is good for this pitching staff: a calm, steady and successful veteran in a sea of veteran misfits and young hopefuls.

    Alas and alack. A trade that didn't turnout all that well for the Twins. I think a great many of us got drawn in by Murphy's 2014-2015 MLB stats. I can only assume Murphy's decline is due to the embarrassment of finding himself playing behind Suzuki and Centeno. I also don't jump up and down too much over a very small sample size. What Hicks has done in 7 games, 2 PA's is kinda sexy. Let's see what happens in the next 7.

    Ah! There it is! Watching him last season, I couldn't figure out what was so weird about his delivery. I remember seeing a pause in Berrios' delivery. Question: last season his fastball looked pretty straight/flat to my TV eyes. Is that true? Pigment of my imagination??

    Just finished reading the pre-game. Really like the pace of your writing. 4/14 Game Notes: "You can’t win the game in the sixth inning — but you sure can lose it." Makes me wonder if there are statistics that show the recent trend of using many RP's in a game are lessening this... 1-2-3 Garcia's! I'm still waiting for an OF filled with Saltalamacchia's or Knickerbocker... Polanco, Sano and Mejia: a good game by all 3. Hoping to see much more from the outfield. Great Articles!

    Not really sure what Twins management is doing here, but can't really expect big changes in there first year..... Basically, I'm on the side of dumping the middling set of veterans the Twins have and aggressively move to the future. It would be very ugly, and many have not shown to temperament for such a thing. I believe the everyday lineup is pretty good, but definitely needs better defense. Any trade the Twins make for Dozier or Santana should include both a starting and relief pitcher. Berrios still needs to prove himself as a MLB pitcher.
