  1. I'm guessing that Kepler gets sent down when Danny Santana returns. I'm hoping that means Santana returns to his super-utility role and Arcia gets another chance to prove himself. I'm no fan of Arcia, but I do believe he should get another shot.
  2. This. AND his plate performance.
  3. To me, it looked like his arm slot had dropped a bit, and his pitches had flattened out and were coming in high over the plate. But, I don't know if I'm remembering his pitching motion correctly, or not. Has anyone seen him pitch enough to know if this could be the case? I thought when I saw him pitch last year, he was coming more over the top.
  4. Everyone in professional baseball not named Barry Bonds needs to become proficient at bunting. I recall a game last year when there was quite a controversy because one manager became upset that the other manager was calling for bunts when the shift was put on. Utterly laughable. Keep laying down bunts and the problem is solved.
  5. I'd also extend this to calling more errors in the outfield. I don't think the standard should be "the ball has to touch his glove" to make an outfielder eligible for an error, IMO.
  6. I like the MLB lineup better. I prefer Sano at 3rd, and Rosario in the outfield. I thought JR Murphy was Nolasco's personal catcher. I'm surprised to see Suzuki catching. JR Murphy could probably double his hit total against Pelfrey.
  7. I seem to recall from last year's draft discussion that the 2016 draft was expected to be much stronger than 2015. At this point, it sounds like a lot of the pitchers in the 2016 class have regressed, and maybe the position players weren't as good as originally thought. Regardless, this sets up well for the Twins, since, as previously mentioned, someone may fall to us who was expected to go considerably higher. I'm looking forward to more discussion as we get closer to the draft. It is easily one of my favorite threads, since everyone seems so well informed.
  8. The use of Meyer, or I should say the lack of use, is another reason I have begun to question Molitor's ability as manager. Given Meyer's struggles last year, and his hot start this year, I would think they would want him to continue on his roll. To interrupt his progress and let him go stale on the bench, IMHO. He should either be in the starting rotation or getting regular work from the pen. Meyer is still a very valuable commodity. If they wanted someone to sit around and do nothing, they could have called up Dean
  9. And Tonkin was brought in to face a lefty, which kinda had me scratching my head at the tiime.
  10. 2017 starting rotation: Gibson, May, Berrios, Duffey, and Meyer. Where'd all those other guys go? I'm mostly kidding with this (at least for the start of the 2017 season), but I'm glad the Twins have some guys that could very well be part of the future of the team.
  11. What does everyone think about the situation in the NL Central where the Pirates could finish the season with the second best record in baseball? What about "breaking the brackets"? The Pirates play the division winner with the third best record, and the division winner with the fourth best record drops down to the wild card game. It would definitely diminish the value of winning the division, but would increase the value of winning games. You'd probably have to go to a balanced schedule as well to make it fair. A wacky idea to be sure, but thought I'd throw it into the discussion. Feel free to call me an idiot.
  12. I don't like the WC format either. It's why I was okay with Terry Ryan pretty much standing pat at the trade deadline. Why commit significant resources to acquire talent for a one game crapshoot? Sure, you could end up being the 2014 Royals or Giants, but you could be the 2014 Oakland Athletics who actually did try to upgrade. (Of course, they were in the race to be division champ as well.) The point is that I think teams would be much more willing to go for it if it was more than a one game playoff. On the main topic, I'm thrilled that the Twins are competitive and that we're getting to see some of the young talent. In spring training, I saw a Terry Ryan interview where he claimed the Twins were trying to be relevant this year. At the time I thought he was trying to be funny. I thought he was trying to become Jon Stewart's successor on the Daily Show after he got fired as the Twins GM.
  13. Good point, and I'd agree. And maybe Molitor is trying to give him more regular playing time at one position, instead of moving him back and forth.
  14. Anyone have an idea why sometimes it's Shane Robinson in LF and Rosario in RF, and sometimes (today) they're flipped? I assume it has to do with the other team's hitting tendencies, but it feels like maybe Molitor just flipped a coin?
  15. If Hughes has a dead arm, maybe he should go to the bullpen and May should return to the starting rotation. Hughes has been in the bullpen before, and it shouldn't take too long to stretch May out again. I thought that was the original plan for May anyway. Rest his arm in the bullpen for awhile and return him to the rotation when rested.
  16. Absolutely agree. That's why I said (maybe I was inarticulate) that I think there has to be something wrong with the FO or our player development. The Cubs and Astros are getting results and we're not. Maybe we're not good at scouting and drafting?
  17. I agree totally with this. I always thought moving Rosario to 2B in the minors was an act of desperation, and that it didn't work out particularly well. But, I might be wrong.
  18. I don't think the Twins roster situation is that different from the Cubs or the Astros. We've had Buxton on the DL and we've got three or four guys on the 40-man roster that might contribute next year (Polanco, Arcia, Kepler, maybe even Meyer). And, we've got a bunch of young guys that will have to be added to the 40-man soon. The problem in my view has been twofold. One, we've had a couple of significant injuries that have delayed Sano and Buxton. Set back Altuve/Correa or Bryant/Russell by a year (Sano) or two (Buxton) and the Cubs and Astros situations might look different. Second, we've had guys that looked like contributors but failed to perform on a consistent basis when given the opportunity. I'd put Danny Santana and Arcia in that category, but some might disagree. Even though I think the Twins have run into some issues that the Cubs and Astros haven't, I don't disagree with the main thrust of what other posters have said. There is something going on, whether it's the failure of the FO to make the right moves , regarding roster construction or trades, or whether the Twins have issues with player development in general, something isn't working here that seems to be working for those other teams.
  19. The river of 20-20 hindsight flows into the ocean of regret. At some point, it's time to move on.
  20. One thing to keep in mind, Deron Johnson, our head of scouting, was just hired a few years back. Since then, there's been a demonstrable change in approach when drafting pitching. In addition, there have been some changes in pitching coaches in the minor leagues. I'm not trying to give the Twins a pass on their poor record, just saying that the current scouts/coaches probably need a little time to see if their results will be any better.
  21. It seems like these west coast road trips have always been tough on the Twins. I can't say that's borne out by the win-loss record, just my impression that's the case. My biggest concern is that we get back on track to have a solid second half. The last couple of seasons the Twins have gone into the tank either a little before or just after the All-Star break. My wish when we were doing our preseason prognostications was that the Twins would remain relevant during the second half of the season. I'm not saying we won't rally after a couple of terrible losses, but our past history has me a little worried.
  22. Excellent observation. At the time he was drafted, reports indicated that he had all the tools to stick at catcher, but a team might consider moving him to the outfield to get his bat to the majors quicker. I think if the Twins had taken him, they probably would have done it with the idea of keeping him at catcher. But, you're right. His destiny isn't at catcher anymore.
  23. The Twins could have drafted Alex Jackson in 2014 and Austin Rei in 2015. Why they passed on these two players is inexplicable to me. Catching remains IMO an organizational weakness. Barring a trade, we are stuck with Suzuki and some combination of Fryer/Hermann. I don't think the others are ready yet. I'm not as down on Suzuki as some, but he's regressed this year and seems to be playing more than he should. I'd be in favor of Fryer catching more games, but I don't think he's done anything to merit the starting role yet. Nevertheless, catching needs to be addressed.
  24. Maybe Arcia can catch? Not serious.....just saying....
  25. I think if the choice is one of Hicks, Robinson or Schafer we keep Hicks. If the choice is two of the three, we keep Hicks and Robinson. Just my best guess.
