  1. http://www.hardballtimes.com/minor-league-run-environments/ Take the numbers with a grain of salt. (Older article, but others are out there.) This years leaderboard of qualified starters (20 innings pitched, so Jay and others fall just short.) There are 47 starters who quality, all but nine have an ERA under 4.00, and two of those nine have and ERA of under 4.10. Twenty-seven of those pitchers have an ERA under 3.00. Sixteen of those pitchers have an ERA under 2.00. Twins Prospect Keeten Steele shares the median ERA at 2.66, so he is "league average" for qualified starters. Stewart has the fifteenth best ERA in the league, although his metrics are for real and has the fifth best FIP and has a good K%. So, just so we all are able to process what this does and does not mean for these dudes. Like someone mentioned...Eades was good there even. http://www.fangraphs.com/minorleaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=10&qual=y&type=0&season=2016&team=0&players=0&sort=5%2ca
  2. Using Platoon split numbers from the last 2 years combined, and also just this year and last I took our current roster and set it up to the best I could. Platoon numbers I looked at most were wOBA, wRC+, ISO and SLG, OBP, GB and FB%'s, and Hard Hit vs Soft Contact%'s. Also, split Mauer and Park evenly at 1B/DH. Say, 2 games on and 2 games off. Park looks great out there, and all of the stats back it up and rates as a top 3 1B in the field in almost every metric. Mauer looks pretty good there too, but having them go 2 games on and 2 games off gives them some rhythm, but also some rest to keep them healthy and strong. Vs. LHP (These top 6 guys crush lefties, so really they could all be moved within any slot in the top 6, but Mauer slides down) 1. Dozier 2B 2. Plouffe 3B 3. Sano RF 4. Park 1B/DH 5. Escobar SS 6. Mauer DH/1B 7. Suzuki/Murphy C (both are pretty good vs lefties) 8. Santana -CF 9. Rosario -LF Vs. RHP (Escobar is not good vs righties, but Nunez is. Plouffe and Dozier just don't hit righties well...they have some pop when they actually do make contact, but they are not better hitters than the guys above them vs righties.) 1. Nunez -SS 2. Mauer -DH/1B 3. Arica -LF 4. Sano -RF 5. Park -1B/DH 6. Rosario -CF 7. Plouffe -3B 8. Dozier -2B 9. Empty catching gear. (Both are terrible vs righties.) Rotation: 1. Berrios 2. Santana 3. Hughes 4. Nolasco 5. May or Meyer or Gibson Bullpen: 6. Jepson 7. Pressly 8. Tonkin 9. May or Meyer 10. Duffey 11. Milone 12. Gibson
  3. I can't imagine that Meyer pithes all that well tonight due to him pitching 1 inning in the last 2 weeks. If he does, that would be awesome, but assuming he doesn't...do they send him back down to get him back to starting or just keep him up and relegate him to the bullpen?
  4. Are these the nicknames for Gibson and Milone? Or Hughes?
  5. Thought he looked good, and even better as the game went along. Both HR's were decent pitches and just in a HR park, but were only solo shots, so who cares. He can strike people out! Wow, so weird seeing this from a starter. Honestly, I would have rather have a starter only give up 1-2 runs in 5 innings by striking guys out, than have a guy who can go 6 while giving up 3-5 runs by pitching to contact. He seemed less 'twitchy' as the game went on, but noticed from videos that he is always a Joe Nathon-esque in that sense, with the constant shoulder shrugging and jersey adjusting. Seems to have trouble with flying open and then the ball tails too far off the right- happened a lot early on and last start.
  6. I think that most people on here were frustrated at how Meyer was left to rust. I also remember several others on here, including myself predicting him to pitch poorly when finally given the chance pitch after such a long mini-DL stint. It seemed so obviously poorly death with, and probably hurt other bullpen pitchers who could have used some rest as well. But, at least he is now getting a chance, albeit without being in stride. My question is, was there any word of how he was successful in his first 2 starts in AAA? What pitches were working or was he getting his K's with. Where was his velocity sitting? Curious as to "how" he was getting it done there.
  7. Maybe, but my biggest worry is that IF he does get the start that it will be his last/only chance to prove himself. I fear that if he starts and falters that they will just automatically come to the decision he belongs in the pen (and maybe he does.) If he is only going to get one shot, I think he deserves it under better circumstances and opportunity to succeed. This does not seem like they are doing him any favors. Again, maybe none of this matters and he succeeds in any role they put him all year, and maybe the pen is the best spot for him. But, if they are really legitimately considering him as a starter...than they have an obligation to him and the team to develop him in the best way possible, which does not seem to be the case at hand here.
  8. Sure, but pretty dang odd all things considered, there not being any hint of what their plan is, recent use of other brought up prospects, him being tall and having repeatability issues, confidence issues, the reason he was brought up was depleted pen but was not used over other guys who had just pitched, and so on. Oh, and we have a bad record already, so what is the caution of the unknown all about? I think the transparency on this issue and overall disappointment with FO and Molitor with roster decisions this year are factored into this frustration. It isn't just this isolated handling of guys.
  9. I almost DON'T WANT him to start Sunday because I am worried he'll be too rusty, will struggle, and then they will just have the excuse of "that is why they didn't use him in the first place."
  10. Seriously, are they going to give us something on what they heck they are doing with Meyer? Is he on the DL....might as well be.
  11. 4.1 innings, 10 hits, and ZERO K's?! Please tell me he was out on a bender last night or that they made him throw 100% changeups! Please, let there be some type of excuse for a disastrous start like that. Hey, no walks though;)
  12. Not sure where to put this Baseball Prospectus transactions report on the Twins, but it mostly covers OF's in Buxton, Keppler, and Santana, while touching on Meyer. It was pretty in depth and shared the thoughts of many of us on this forum. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=29042
  13. I should have clarified that, but figured starting Sano nearly everyday was assumed, while the others would be shuffled out depending on situation and circumstances at the time.
  14. Seriously, has there been any official talk from the FO or Molitor on what is the immediate plan with Meyer and their explanation for not using him? This seems extremely weird in their handling of of their call-ups. I wasn't too happy about Keppler sitting on the bench and getting his first start vs a lefty...seemed like the worst plan to me. But, Meyer's situation just seems like they are TRYING to screw him up again. Of course, he will only get one shot up here too I bet. So, if they sit him forever and he then is rusty and jittery on his first opportunity...maybe give the guy the benefit of the doubt and take some ownership in how he was handled? I thought for sure they would send Berrios back down after last nights small sample that included bad weather and a delayed start.
  15. I don't know the answer here, but once Plouffe gets back they should play with platoons as much as they can when figuring out playing time. Don't be sitting Arcia and Rosario against righties and don't be sitting Plouffe or Sano against lefties. So, maybe an outfield Arcia, Rosario, and Santana most of the time against righties, while mixing Sano and Plouffe at 3B, DH, and 1B for Plouffe sometimes (giving Joe or Park their rest days.) Against lefties have and OF of Sano, Santana, and Rosario, with Plouffe at 3B. Plenty of at-bats for everyone in that scenario.
  16. No, that is a pretty bright acronym.
  17. The value of a good bullpen is directly correlated with how good the rest of the team is (rotation, lineup, defense.) That Yankee bullpen is awesome, but he team still isn't winning because the staff has been bad. Good bullpen can't be 1st priority. It can be second after bats or rotation, but putting it first is nonsensical. A team needs to be decent to good for the bullpen to really really important, otherwise, teams should be looking to fix their rotations and lineups first.
  18. Was following the game on MLB At Bat while I was trying to put a minion to bed. Saw that Myer was once again NOT used. Was there any discussion about him during the broadcast or on here? Don't want to sift through it. I can only assume he is going to make a start now, but wouldn't he likely be all out of whack after being brought up and told to sit in the corner? I can only assume this would be setting him up for failure. Berrios was not helped by the weather and wait tonight. Guessing they send him back down after this tiny sample size to "work on more things."
  19. I just see no reason to mess with what Meyer was doing as a starter. You either bring him up to start or leave him in AAA to start and see if he can keep it up. The only way they should be moving him to the bullpen is if he starts to struggle as a starter again....BUT, you don't mess with a good thing when starters are hard to find.
  20. May can't close because saves get factored into arbitration.
  21. Yeah, not too excited about the timing of bringing him up or how they're planning on 'NOT'' using him. He was dominating as a starter and getting his confidence back. If they're going to bring him up to not use him in any meaningful role, just leave him to keep it going in AAA. What is he to them?
  22. At age 22, Milone pitched 151.1 innings to the tune of a 2.91 ERA in a more difficult pitching A+ league environment. This is Gonsalves age 22 season. But, I hope you are right.
  23. I just can't for the life of me find a way to believe in Gonsalves or Stewart. Partly because the numbers at A+ don't really carry as much challenge compared to other leagues. But, it has been shown that Lefty pitchers with decent control and refinement can dominate in the minors (Milone and many others), but struggle in the bigs as starters. Certain 'things' translate up more than others, but I fear Gonsalves will fade just a tiny little at the next two levels, and then a lot in MLB. I trust Stewart less because of injuries and his performance over the past few years. However, K%'s have nothing to do with ballparks, and he is striking guys out like crazy, while still getting ground balls. I don't know who he is right now, but at least I can buy into the numbers he is putting up more due to the K%. I want these two to prove me wrong in the worst way. I really do. I just want to see Stewart succeed in AA, with continued success in the K% department. I have never been high on sinker ball/2-seamer pitchers who rely on contact outs only. Now, sinkerballer's that strike guys out though are awesome. Depends who he is....Arrietta/Tanaka or Gibbson/Pelfrey. Maybe Gonsalves has better velocity, stuff, and out pitches than I think. Maybe Stewart is just getting healthy, getting stronger, getting smarter, more confident, or using more secondary stuff right now? I don't know, but I will be skeptical and reserved in my enthusiasm of these two until they are keeping K%'s in the 20's in both AA and then AAA. Again, I soooooo want to be wrong here!!! Please, let me be wrong.
  24. Probably like the idea of grooming for late-innings pressure innings by keeping him in the closer role in AA too.
