  1. Unfortunately, probably the Braves. They're actually trying to suck. We just do it naturally.
  2. I just hope the starting pitching is for real, because if they have any kind of drop off these games are going to get really ugly and uncompetitive. Even a marginal improvement in hitting would have won a few games. But if the rotation slips and we start leaning on that bullpen every day, this lineup (even with considerable improvement) isn't equipped to outhit that level of deficiency.
  3. Pay $20 for a free photo opportunity? Even Blyleven's California math senses something is off about that.
  4. I know it was a tough offseason to find BP help, but I have to believe there were better options than this. We actually went into a season with a bullpen strategy of waiting for guys to play themselves out of a job, then replacing as we go with unproven prospects. We set up a minefield for the first chunk of the season, and if the rookies don't pan out then it is going to be a minefield all year. There's no sure anchor to this staff right now to hide those performances. I have high hopes for some of our minor league RPs, but my confidence has been shaken based on injuries and declining performances at AA. I wouldn't want to bank my season on having multiple rookies provide average or better performance when those same guys are barely holding their own at AA. Maybe somebody can help me out here. Who was the last rookie reliever the Twins called up that became a strong bullpen stalwart? I just looked back 4-5 years and no names really jumped out. And we're to assume we'll now get 2-3 in one year? It's such a big jump, and I hope it happens, but I'm not terribly comfortable with that strategy.
  5. No problem. Last year's data seems to mostly agree with expectations as well, although there were a few curious results mixed in. This was the first time I'd used Fangraphs as well btw. I suggest you give it a try, it wasn't too tricky and there's a lot of cool information to sort through. http://i.imgur.com/64A2eKE.jpg Link: http://i.imgur.com/64A2eKE.jpg
  6. Fangraphs' shutdown/meltdown statistic (based on win probability added) linked to by HitInAPinch seems to be a reasonable metric to track relievers. Even with the SSS that is the 2016 season, it so far seems to agree with the eyeball test as well as Seth's first draft at the "unnamed stat" in this article. I imagine there will be a lot of movement over the next few weeks. http://i.imgur.com/zVZICTa.jpg Link to image: http://i.imgur.com/zVZICTa.jpg
  7. I have to imagine some of that disparity is the result of the good pitchers we've faced who can take advantage of a swing-happy, contact-deficient lineup when runners get on base by throwing more junk. Especially since we don't have any good base stealers getting on who can take advantage of those pitches. Add to that what Markos suggested with the more successful hitters being interspersed with the strikeout guys and it makes sense how the strikeout rate is so much higher with runners on.
  8. I remember sometime after his first couple weeks with the big club Sano was asked about hitting MLB pitchers vs. AA pitchers. He said he thought it was actually easier because the MLB pitchers have better control, which made it easier to anticipate where the pitch was going. Being as sharp on the mental side of the game as he is, if he can figure out what the pitcher is trying to do then he can react. Since AA pitchers don't have always have the command to execute like that, there's no telling where the pitch will end up. When you have the incredible talent he has to hit almost any pitch near the zone, it makes some sense. Pretty amazing stuff.
  9. Why stop now? The Royals are quickly becoming my new favorite UFC team.
  10. Matched. That didn't take long. Sounds like it was a long bomb to right center.
  11. Have you tried looking at the swing rates against the pitchers of interest in minor leagus compared to the majors? Might help you evaluate your theory.
  12. I'm curious what the rate is specifically for high shool SS/2B/3B/CF drafted in the first couple rounds. Remove pitchers and longshots from the metric, as well as positions that require considerably different skillsets or type of offensive/defensive prodution.
  13. I believe the clock is only in effect when the bases are empty.
  14. Wasn't that because they had concerns about Sale's durability as a starter due to his build and his funky delivery?
  15. In fairness, the Twins were looking at Mauer at age 26-27 coming off an historic season for his premium defensive position, and in the beginning of his prime. Pujols was (at least) 31-32 and already showing physical decline, and received a deal well beyond what even Mauer got.
  16. I'm not criticizing Mauer here, but have any of these monster contracts ever returned close to full value for the team? They always seem to turn into considerably overpaid deals after a few years, and sometimes before the ink dries. I don't really understand how the values got so inflated when the players rarely live up to them. Is it just the big market teams over-inflating contracts because they can, and thus everyone else suffers?
  17. Have any of these $23+ million per year contracts ever not been a bad deal for the team after the first 2-3 years? I don't really understand how the values got so inflated when the players rarely live up to them. Is it just the big market teams over-inflating contracts because they can, and thus everyone else suffers?
  18. He could play independent ball or at a juco somewhere and reenter next year...and probably get drafted by the Astros again since they'll finish somewhere in the bottom of the league. Or he could go to college and wait 3 years to reenter the draft, while assuming all the injury risk.
  19. I thought I remembered Mastroianni stealing 3rd with someone else stealing 2nd a couple years ago. Common sense says it was probably Revere, but I don't actually remember.
  20. So is Joe Mauer going to still be the local "host" for the all star players, without even coming close to being in the game? I don't know if I've ever heard of that happening.
  21. If you'd told me 2-3 years ago that we'd have a lineup where Mauer was last in SLG, 6th in OBP, and 7th in AVG, I'd have thought "wow, that must be the first undefeated team in the history of baseball".
  22. Anywhere below the neck on the other guy.
  23. Don't look now, but Arcia has a walk 3 games in a row. That's a good sign.
  24. I'm pretty sure it hooked hard and hit the foul pole, didn't it? Doesn't get any tighter than that.
  25. That 9% humidity helps. Not quite like the 95 degrees you get in July in Iowa.
