Garver has by far the closest thing to an adequate bat between AA/AAA catchers but only started 40% of games at catcher in AA. I don't see how that changes much in Rochester with JRM and Paulino there. Not sure how they'll do that this year and it may be tough again next year if JRM and/or Turner are both needing AAA time. If they really think he can be an MLB catcher I'd think they'd find a way to get him more starts at his future position. It gives the impression they don't really believe in him as a catcher. Do he not have the chops for the position defensively? Is this a Josmil Pinto type of situation?

Pretty sure Jimmer was saying Escobar on his own is a non-factor when considering who is the future starting SS, and separately that Gordon is too far away to be counted on as well. He wasn't suggesting that Gordon is going to displace Escobar or anybody.

Seconded. I don't know why some people are so bent on trading him. I think he's going to be a great "glue" piece that does a bit of everything to help win games.

Found Molitor's TD account. Do you have to list Winston Smith as an alias on legal paperwork?

Article: Buxton Stalls Out, Again
Taildragger8791 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
People act like a little patience is all that was needed for Carlos Gomez, but he didn't click until his 7th year in the majors and his 3rd team. He also hasn't been very good since he left Milwaukee. I seriously hope the Twins can apply some lessons learned to avoid that slow of development again. Everyone remarked about how rushed Gomez was at the time and how it set him back. It follows that using AAA is appropriate considering Buxton has spent less than a season between AA and AAA. I don't understand how we went from worrying about rushing guys to wanting every talented player in the majors today, sink or swim. Patience is required since there is no other option and he's still really young. Maybe it'll click in a year or two. But how long can a club wait? Gomez was mentioned a lot so I ask this: If you had the knowledge right now that it will take another 5 years of poor hitting before you get to enjoy about 3-4 great years, is that a process you want to calmly wait through? I envision this board and the fans getting awfully restless well before then. Edit: Typo -
Chargois reportedly has three above average pitches, including a power changeup and breaking ball. I don't think that's the issue.

Article: Monday Funday
Taildragger8791 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Angels probably figured they can't or won't resign Santiago after '17 and won't compete next year anyways, so they flipped him and took on a bad contract in order to gamble on Alex Meyer. Their farm system is barren and they took a chance on finding a new stud pitcher. Santiago isn't going to nab a big return but he could certainly net something if we don't need his services next year. He's far more serviceable than Nolasco, Milone, Hughes, or Duffey.- 90 replies

Not a free agent next year. Sounds like he has another year of arbitration remaining. Should bring a little more stability to the rotation while waiting on pitching prospects to come up next year.- 553 replies

Taildragger8791 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It is, no doubt. I don't see a reason the Twins can't afford to do some of the same if they allocated resources better, and were willing to pull the trigger when opportunity arises. But it's unreasonable to stockpile the number of big FAs that the Yankees are capable of acquiring.- 553 replies

I'm jealous of the ability of the Yankees to reload so easily like that. Even if their drafting is terrible they will always have pieces to trade and for some reason teams loves forking over their top prospects for them. They make it look so easy.- 553 replies

Agreed, and I'm not intending to poo poo the trade. This is likely what Abad was worth, and I'd rather shoot for upside over low ceiling/mediocre floor types. Just providing some context that he doesn't have just a "little" control problem, he's vintage Ricky Vaughn at the moment.- 553 replies

Article: Official Trade Deadline Day Thread
Taildragger8791 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Just pointing out that the examples you listed are guys who broke into the fringe of the top 100 in their first year. Those types of guys are considered good prospects. That's a very different context from AAA/AA guys with 3+ years experience who are still barely in the top 100. Those types of players are likely approaching their ceiling.- 553 replies

Pat Light has a walk rate of 6 per 9 in AAA between last year and this year. That's far worse than Alex Meyer, the poster boy for control issues. Seems far fetched that he'll suddenly learn to find the zone but could be useful if he gets that rate down below 4.- 553 replies

Taildragger8791 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't think the Twins will outright waive anyone other than Nolasco and Milone in an attempt to clear their salaries. The rest will be waived only if they find a trade partner or in a last ditch attempt to find one at the waiver deadline, and they would surely be claimed. Other teams might claim just to block the trade attempt. It's a risky move if a team really is set on getting a particular player.- 553 replies

Article: Where Should Jorge Polanco Play?
Taildragger8791 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This article pretty well clears it up. Polanco isn't going to play much this year barring injury or trade. In which case you may as well trade the guy or leave him in AAA, but whatever. Molitor doesn't see any opportunity for playing time with this totally loaded roster (paraphrasing). http://mlb.com/r/article?ymd=20160730&content_id=192663010&vkey=news_min&c_id=min "We might have to wait for an opportunity to get him more consistent play, but we'll try to get a little bit of a look at him this time around between now and the end of the season if we can."- 118 replies

Article: Where Should Jorge Polanco Play?
Taildragger8791 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I just wanted to second this notion. I'm starting to think the Twins have a hard time assessing and developing the more skilled positions. Too many players come up that ooze talent and then can't execute at their primary position. It's getting exceedingly harder to believe that these athletic and dedicated players figured out that they have two left feet somewhere between AA and MLB.- 118 replies

Article: Where Should Jorge Polanco Play?
Taildragger8791 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
After watching Revere bounce balls to the cutoff man I can't believe that Dozier is anywhere near that tier of arm strength. Even his off balance throws are on a rope, I've never noticed a slow or droopy throw from him.- 118 replies

Article: Where Should Jorge Polanco Play?
Taildragger8791 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
At this point I'd prefer to trade Dozier and put Polanco at 2nd by the start of next season, if they're sure he can hit. This team can play .500 ball in a year or so with the right moves and some luck in development from the young guys. Having a 30-error butcher at SS would be a handicap to a contact-heavy pitching staff. I'm getting tired of Dozier's extreme hot/cold spells, especially at the top of the lineup. After his crazy June he had a 3 week stretch hitting .145/.253/.339, then heated up again over the last week. I can understand that volatility out of your #7-#9 hitters, but it's maddening at #1-#4. Seeing opposing teams IBB Mauer to get to your clean-up hitter is a pretty big indictment on what other teams think of Dozier, even if he did pull off a hit in that spot.- 118 replies

Article: Evaluating Deron Johnson's Drafts
Taildragger8791 replied to Thrylos's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This was the thought I had to improve the analysis as well. Weighting for the draft strength of each year would help as well. Adjust the final result based on total WAR produced compared to the average draft in your sample period, for example. If the draft over/under-performed by 20% then it seems reasonable to adjust each draft slot's expected result by the same amount. -
AAA has another catcher that needs to play a lot and salvage himself, in JRM, as well as a clogged DH spot. I don't think there's a big enough difference between AA and AAA to stunt development by staying a little longer. What do you propose to make the puzzle pieces fit there?

Most of your list has little to do with Terry Ryan specifically, unfortunately. Kepler was signed when Bill Smith was GM.Most of the power hitters you're hinting at were also acquired under Bill Smith. Not sure what veterans you think have notable trade value. Most of them are unlikely to produce a significant return. The expectations are mostly longshot prospects.Sports team budgets almost always have increased flexibility each year you look forward, because contracts expire. The exception being when you have young superstars that you expect to resign.

Just glancing at his splits, his OBP has been higher than his SLG in 3 out of 4 months. I don't even know what to make of that but it sounds bizarre for a 1B/DH. That has to be highly unusual outside of speedy SS/CF types and pitchers.

Sano to catcher, you say?
