  1. This kid has some serious stamina. Lots of innings pitched, this late in the year, and still strikes out 10. No dead arm syndrome here.
  2. All good points. What got me thinking about this was last year we were at a Red Wings game in Gwinnet. Pressley comes in. My Son in law watched him and said he's a good pitcher. I said he's a rule 5 pick up from Boston, spent all last year with the Twins. He said no wonder, you can tell he's pitched in the majors, more polished. After the Graham melt down, this came back to the cranium. What would a Twins MILer look like if given the opportunity. Now, I will admit, if you don't have quality pitchers in the system, probably forced to go this route. This coming year, we will have some tough choices to make as to who's on the 40 man. Wouldn't it be the cat's arse if Graham was cut in favor of one of our own? Bottom line........ Rule 5 guys get a loooooooooooong leash
  3. Good stuff Seth, then Goodrum has appeared to emerge on the radar screen.
  4. This to me is best served as an unofficial Twins team policy. I get the reclamation project and if so, wouldn't you try to make a trade deal with Atlanta, then send him down to work on his craft.
  5. I was hoping you would chime in Seth but let me ask you this; Tonkin was throwing 95 also last year, if he was stashed on the 25 do you think he would have similar results as Graham? Bear in mind, Graham has been on the team since April, pitching multiple times in low leverage situations over 4 months. He's had plenty of time to get his feet wet. Had the exact scenario happened to Tonkin, do you think he would have coughed up the Grand Slam to ARod and if so, is that not a push. That's the basis of my discussion. Thanks Seth, you do an awesome job at Twins Daily
  6. Fair enough, I was picking on Graham but using him as an example on why even bother with Rule 5. Let's just promote from within and call it our Rule 6
  7. Great point, but this thread is not about managing the bullpen, it's instead picking someone else's Rule 5 rather than promote from within. Thanks and you're right about Pressley
  8. Great point, Rule 6 based on Rule 5 qualifier. Thanks
  9. It seems nearly every year the Twins hang around after winter meetings to pick a Rule 5 to stash on the 25 man Roster for the whole blasted year. See Pressley (who I actually think has a bright future) and Graham who grooves the FB to ARod for the Grand Slammer. I've said it before but this really burns my craw that they do this. To me, it shows no faith in your MILB pitchers, a slap in the face to all those who hang in there, toil, hoping for the chance to be in the Show. It's totally BS. You can't tell me there isn't anyone as good as Graham in the Minors. I therefore, have a new program. It's called the RULE 6 PLAN That's right, you pick the best MILB Relief pitcher in the Twins system, regardless of where he is and you stash the one pitcher on the 25 MLB Roster for the whole year. You use him just like they use Graham or Pressley in the past; low leverage situations (blow out losses or mop up in blow out wins) He gets MLB coaching, learns from the pros. To me, this is how you create a great Minor League system. Reward your own first before grabbing someone off the scrap heap. Think about it; Would Achter or Tonkin or anybody serve up the Grand Slam to ARod just as easy as Graham would. If so, then it's a push, if not, then the Twins would have won. So, based on all this, my FIRST RULE 6 pick for 2016 is JT Chargois. He gets the coveted 25 man Rule 6 spot. Who's yours?
  10. Just thinking (I know, it's hard) when Michael is fully healthy, he'll probably go back to 2nd where Polanco has been playing. I can't see a platoon. Polanco would have to go back to SS which moves Goodrum out which means the Twins are still committed to SS or find another position (which I doubt) or go to AAA. Interesting.
  11. So, Levi Michael was back at DH after being out a few games, makes sense. Polanco again was at 2nd and Niko continued to play SS. Humm, wondering what's going on.
  12. If the Twins have the LA Dogers $300M mindset, then no they are not drowning in bad contracts. But, we know that's not the case, so yes, they will be drowning in bad contracts if they don't give roster space to better young pitchers like Duffy and Berrios or have a chance to make a trade for a young stud. It's the years of contract that is the problem. If Santana is so great, why hadn't he already been on a multi year deal. These guys have been mediocre to poor, who in right mind would take on that contract. Next year, assuming the Twins can't move one of them, we'll have Hughes Santana Nolasco Milone And, only 1 open spot for Mays, Duffy, Berrios and I'm holding out hope for Meyers Who has fueled the turnaround so far? It's all the young guys. The high priced vets haven't done jack squat
  13. Have you seen him pitch? Just curious, as you have written him off
  14. No, I see no comparison, I'd rather see a steady 270ish 1st yr BA that will get better vs Santana's 1yr aberration. Santana was also dealing with his inconsistent D, Rosario hasn't.
  15. If they don't move Kepler, they must have made a deal with the Lookouts to keep a few of the better prospects for the playoff run. I don't know, just speculating.
  16. Great timing Boom Boom. I've been noticing Niko lately and made a comment this AM in the Minor League Report. I'm beginning to wonder if something is going on. Since his call up, Nikos been playing CF and 3rd. Lately, he's back at SS. Polanco played last night at 2nd after being out awhile. Youre right, he's very athletic but on a par with Kepler and Buxton. It's just that he's been raw. Now the tools are developing and especially his hitting. Defensively, he's always been consistent, making all the plays. I think the Twins thought he would add more weight as he got older but he hasn't. They maybe taking a second look at him at SS. Santana has been inconsistent and Polancos biggest problem is his throwing. I've seen all these guys play and just felt Niko would need more time to develop. Now he's back at SS using that strong arm and hitting great, putting it all together. Is there something going on with my fellow Georgian.
  17. Good to have Polanco back and Der Kep showing some muscle and great hitting. What's interesting is Polanco at 2nd, Meneses who normally plays 2nd or SS at 3rd and Niko Goodrum back at short where he has been over past few games. Levi Michael must be nursing an injury or something. Niko had been at 3rd since Sano left. He's a terrific athlete and was drafted as a SS. Anyway, food for thought. I know DM likes to mix things up.
  18. We have a bright lefty future: Gonsalves Jay Thorpe Melotakis (I love that 97 FB) Anybody I missed?
  19. So is it negative for me to say that when the Twins start marching out the bullpen, I take a Valium, washed down with a Scotch on the rocks
  20. Great stuff all. Graham doesn't deserve to be on the roster. A trade should have been worked out with Atlanta since they thought that highly of him then he could have been in AAA working on some things, waiting for a call up, just like all the other pitchers.
  21. Want to add, up until last night where he faced ARod, Graham was used in low leverage, so his past performances were, where Twins were getting blown out or had big leads, thus my term for meaningless situations.
  22. Great article Seth, really well thought out and totally agree Hard to add anything more, especially after enduring the last 2 nights implosions. I think the Twins need to offer free Valium for all fans once the bullpen "1st man up bullpen parade" starts. The stashing of the JR Graham rule 5 pick has been my biggest beef. They grab a rule 5 almost every year which shows a complete lack of faith in their minor league pitchers by not promoting from within. Then, he gets added to the 25, pitching in low leverage situations, taking a roster spot away from a deserving minor leaguer. You can't tell me that a Tonkin or Achter or whoever, wouldn't be just as successful when knowing they will be on the roster for the whole year, pitching in meaningless situations.
  23. Spot on Spot on Maestro. We're only 1.5 games back from 2 nd wild card. Seems to me you get your best players up to make a run at this. It's the young guys that are doing it now. Get Bux back up to man Center move Hicks over to right to use that cannon and bring up Der Kep to play outfield and 1st. The awesome Foursome will lead us to the promise land.
  24. Outstanding performances yesterday from Buxton, Kepler, Vielma and Meyer. Great to see Niko, a fellow Georgian have a big day but hard to pass up Buxton for hitter of the day when he has his 1st AAA homer then the winning hit.
  25. It sounds like he shelved his slider to work on other pitches. I'm wondering if he's still concerned about his shoulder or elbow problem he had last year, thus reason for not throwing the slider, as that was his wipeout pitch. Going down to Florida next couple of weeks, hopefully able to see him pitch.
