  1. Hasn't Buxton been working on his bunting? I would consider batting him behind Dozier in the 2 spot due to the amount of pressure that puts on a defense. As far as not batting Dozier at leadoff because of the home runs, he also gets better pitches to start off a game because no pitcher wants to walk the first guy. I'd have him lead off. I like Kepler splitting up Sano and Park. You could also split them up by batting Sano 3rd, Mauer 4th, Park 5th, and then follow him up with Kepler. So, here's my twisted lineup (not saying good, but something else to consider): Dozier Buxton Sano Mauer Park Kepler Polanco Rosario Castro
  2. Tonkin....what to do, what to do? Gives up ding dongs like a doorbell. Yet he throws hard and has a decent breaking ball. Take him north or let him go?
  3. That's ifs, not as in infielders. That's ifs as in if this, if that, etc. This is the time of year when we can typically gauge the odds of a team being competitive by the number of ifs. The more ifs, the less likely they will compete. Last year was not a good year for ifs. IF you recall, there was the IF Sano can play right field, IF Byron Buxton can take the next step, IF Rosario can pick up where he left off the previous year, IF Esco can play short full time, IF the rotation can get someone to step up from the young guys, IF....the list seemed endless last year. So, where are we at for IF's this year? (Feel free to add to the list) IF Polanco can be solid at short. IF Park or Vargas can make major contributions at DH. IF Castro can hit at all and play solid defense. IF Phil Hughes can return to be a legitimate MLB pitcher. IF our bullpen has a closer. IF our 2-5 rotation guys can eat up innings to give the always overworked bullpen a break. IF I can drink enough beer to get me thru June-September when we are playing for not-last-place.
  4. I agree, but who gets bumped off the 40 man to make room for Park? DanSan? Adrianza? Tonkin? I think DanSan is to the point of where he either makes the trip north or is gone. Adrianza is out of options. Tonkin shouldn't be on the roster anymore IMO, but replacing a pitcher with a DH on the 40 man probably isn't a popular proposal.
  5. Tonkin should clear waivers, but if he doesn't no sweat off my baseballs.
  6. Unless Hughes absolutely stinks in ST, he will be in the starting rotation.
  7. Well, no potential Twins starters got a hit...potential Twins pitchers Mejia, Duffey, Chargois got rocked for 14 runs, 12 earned...Polanco had a throwing error...Final score 19-0....but I'm a glass half full kinda guy. Other than that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?
  8. Pitchers do get hurt...sometimes in spring training. We may not even have 6 guys to throw to start the year. Not trying to be negative, it's just reality.
  9. LOL...against twins pitching...gotta factor that in.
  10. I will be the contrarian and say no and here is my reasoning. Last year he had a .240 BA, .269 OPS, and a .606 OPS...AND that was a big improvement over the previous year. I just don't see teams willing to spend a roster spot for that. He has some speed, but not the kind that raises eyebrows and with that bad OPS, speed does no good walking back to the dugout anyway. I think every team has a DanSan lurking the minors somewhere.
  11. I think you missed one more thing. The Twins don't really have a clubhouse leader - that Michael Cuddyer/Tori Hunter kind of player that keeps it loose in the dugout but at the same time plays with intensity. That is needed for a team to be successful. Without that, you lose 100+games. Unless Castro is that guy, we still don't really have a clubhouse leader.
  12. I think we need more bullpen depth...well, we need a lot of things...but bullpen depth would be a priority. I think this is the year that we really need to see what some of the young guys can do in the rotation. It could be a revolving door this year (even more than other years). I see Kintzler as this years Jepsen. When I watch him close a game, I hold my breath. He's not overpowering and throws a lot of ground balls with a less than stellar defense behind him. Seems like a formula for failure. So, improve what you can, and the bullpen seems like an easier target than some of the other weaknesses.
  13. I think what they are being offered now, they can get at the trade deadline. So, why not get another half year out of Dozier?
  14. I agree on Park. What I want to see in spring training that would surprise me is - 1. Sano shows up in shape. 2. Glen Perkins healthy, still has velocity, and still has the slider. 3. Phil Hughes healthy, sharp, with a FB in the low 90's. 4. Polanco error free at SS. 5. Both Park and Vargas both looking like they should be on the team.
  15. Predicting baseball is pretty tough to do. That's why hope springs eternal in March. Sometimes, a dribbler, a dink, and a dying quail are the difference between a loss and a win while a rocket up the middle turns into a double play and a loss. Sure, the laws of averages should catch up with a team, but they don't always. The reality is that the Twins will need some breaks, some luck, some guys to over perform just to play meaningful games in September.
  16. I think this thread needs to take a turn. What if Dozier isn't traded? Dozier at 2nd, Polanco at SS, Sano at 3B, Mauer at 1B, Keppleroni in RF, Buck in CF, Rosario in LF, Castro behind the dish, DH...? A couple of options there...none of them great. Pitching...ugh. Erv followed by a bunch of mush and question marks. Bullpen...a couple of decent options and a whole lot of question marks. That sounds like about 88 losses to me. It's depressing to consider, but I'm afraid it might happen.
  17. I get what you are saying about signing a veteran, but there's another half to the equation. What veteran will want to come to the Twins? Sure, if you throw enough money at them, but I think we are hoping for a buy low guy. In that case, we are left with the desperate leftovers and if that's the case, I'd roll with what we have.
  18. I've heard that Vin Scully is available! OK, maybe not. Anyway, Bremer actually isn't that bad. Travel around a bit and listen to other homer broadcasts and you'll learn to appreciate him. Bert is Bert just as the Dazzleman is the Dazzleman. Bert was a goofball in the dugout and now he's a goofball in the booth. Gladden wouldn't be a good fit IMO. He was high energy in the dugout and he can get kind of excited when things don't go well (he's been excited a lot the last few years) on the field. I think back to the days of listening to Hawk Harrelson for the White Sox and I can tell you that no one made me appreciate our announcers more than him.
  19. Trevor Plouffe (5.162) – $8.2MM Hector Santiago (5.016) – $8.6MM Brandon Kintzler (5.003) – $2.2MM Eduardo Escobar (4.128) – $2.9MM Tommy Milone (4.113) – $4.9MM Kyle Gibson (3.056) – $3.5MM Ryan Pressly (3.053) – $1.1MM Curious what the formula is based one. Pitching is always in demand, but what makes Plouffe worth 8.2 mill? We saw that there wasn't much demand for him in the offseason and I doubt that this season has increased that demand. Personally, I don't see taking on Plouffe at that price. Santiago...maybe, but probably not. The rest of them, sure.
  20. I like Park (when healthy) over Vargas because he did play a pretty good first base. However, unless I am misremembering (had to haul out the Clemens quote), Park didn't hit lefties worth a hoot. So, maybe Vargas DH's against lefties, Park against righties, and they both do some subbing for Joe at 1B? I realize that I just chewed up 3 roster spots for 3 part time players who play 1 position in the field which isn't ideal, but it also gives us a bopper bat off the bench.
  21. Yeah, remember last year when we were all optimistic about next year? Let's see how the Braves do next year. They were still one of the worst MLB teams this year.
  22. Why not both? After all, we are fans of the Twins.
  23. I love the fact that we, as Twins fans, have not lost our sense of humor. In the old days, I remember getting snarky with White Sox fans who would crash a game thread just to poke the pig. I think this year, if they had invaded a thread and told us that our team sucked, I think we'd have just rolled with it....yeah...so?...what's your point? As they say - winning teaches you how to celebrate, but losing teaches you how to survive.
  24. That would be great! I'd question the sanity of the Braves for doing that as they are in a similar position regarding the quality of their team.
