  1. Buehlre's most recent contract was 4/58, actually. It was early-ish in the off-season and a strangely high price, I think. I was thinking 4/44 for him. But yes, technically, the Twins could sign a very good pitcher for $15 million and a good pitcher for $10 million. I imagine that only one of those happens (and frankly, let's hope for that). Trading in the off-season for a guy still in his arbitration years like Clayton Richard or a similar type can be a better alternative to signing the Jason Marquis kind. Richard would probably cost $10 million for two years before he becomes a free agent. I am sure there are other names like that too. He was just the one I know.
  2. I like these and the Bigley promotion. Benson, Hicks, and Arcia manning the New Britain OF together for at least a bit!
  3. Capps and Burton. Casilla. Pray for Pavano as well, but that is unlikely. Danny Valencia can be involved in a trade as well.
  4. All resources need to be thrown at starting pitching. This doesn't mean anything beyond signing one FA starter and packaging a trade to get another. Capps, Burton, Valencia, Casilla, Hermsen, Bigley, Morales, N. Roberts, and J.D. Williams are just some of the names that should be considered to bring in 2 starters at the AAA or MLB level plus whatever else.
  5. God, this would be terrible. Do people generally have a bad feeling about the Twins all the way through 2014? This guy is on pace to hit more homers than anybody in Twins memory (are we talking Killebrew here?) and trading him is seen as a remotely good idea!? Do you people know what kind of drop that means for the Twins lineup? Do you have ANY idea? Say goodbye until 2016 at the earliest.
  6. haha. I didn't check the stats further.
  7. There was no reason to ever stretch him out and try this again.
  8. Yeah, I was about to post those stats. And now it is gotten dramatically worse. Even Swarzak is a better starting option.
  9. I don't think it is because they think it is better that there is no god, but rather that it is true that there is no god and whether that makes them happy or not is irrelevant.
  10. It's also embarrassing. As in it is embarrassing that this manager keeps doing this. Oakland loaded up on righties to match up against him and here are two runs in the first inning.
  11. I bet they do stretch him out again, but that they are going to go about it slowly so that there is less of a chance of a setback. Gibson, Bromberg and Stuifbergen healthy and starting will make me more comfortable about SP depth in the system.
  12. Trading Denard Span goes toward "tearing this team down" though. Only Justin Morneau makes sense to trade out of that lineup (outside of Casilla and Carroll, but that's not likely to happen) in my view. Weakening the top of the lineup in order to get quality pitching that can be had on the FA market for at max $25 million is just not smart. I have said this elsewhere, but if I were promised that Joe Mauer would move up to the second spot and bring everyone else up with him, then I would be more willing to mess with the top of the lineup in this way. But . . .
  13. On another note, Glunn, I really like Clayton Richard who turns 29 in a few months, is making 2.71 million this year, and who is under control until 2015. So that would be probably about a $8-10 million investment through 2014. He has been very good for the past 430 innings and has now seemed to fix his control issues.
  14. Well, that was interesting. I agree with the general sentiment about the Pohlads here and I don't like the argument that it is "their money, so . . . ." Wealth is not created in a vacuum. A lot of "my wealth" is generated socially and depends on other people (who pay to take my classes, who build roads, cars, etc. etc. etc.). And clearly in this case there is a DIRECT connection between the Pohlads and other people's money! That's generally how that economic class of people gets wealthy, after all. But enough about that. I still wouldn't judge on this year's spending. Now if payroll drops again this coming year, then everyone should really take issue with how these greedy jerks are "spending their money."
  15. I am happy to see Jorge Polanco doing well.
  16. At the deadline, sure, but what about in the offseason?
  17. Interesting. A few things. I don't get the Torii thing either. There are probably going to be about 1/3 fewer prospects coming back than what you have here. Marcum is *definitely* someone the Twins should go after, but I would imagine it is going to be at $10 million per year.
  18. Good list. Bruce Pugh is pretty dominant right now. I am going to be moving him up my list quite a bit.
  19. Good god and a half. Don't make me think about DB being the third catcher next year. The Twins should pay him a nice enough salary to be the catcher for whatever affiliate at the time has the most good pitching prospects or at least capable major league pitching prospects. I am not really joking, either. Mauer-Doumit-Herrmann means nice versatility and no need for going out after the Clete Thomas or Eric Komatsu types, or for wasting Chris Parmelee just to have a left-handed bench bat.
  20. Rich Becker. Hmm. I am actually surprised that Becker was that productive. Those were the days when I basically cried every time a Twins game started though. Note of clarification: it isn't that I don't like Revere, I just never expected him to produce like he has this year. I would have expected about a .680 OPS ceiling for him this year. I don't like the idea of losing both Span and Hicks because I don't like losing that kind of OBP potential at the top (unless, you know, I was promised that Joe Mauer would be batting second in such a scenario . . . ).
  21. I like the idea of looking elsewhere than just contenders for trades.
  22. Yeah, that is one bit of an anomaly this year. The other is the power increase with the BB/K rate being more problematic. I still wonder if they are experimenting with him some to improve on some aspects of his batting while perhaps struggling a bit at other areas that he was good at in 2011. This would be similar to how they tried to make Parmelee into an all-around hitter.
  23. I posted this somewhere, but offering Liriano that 1 year/$12 million (roughly) deal might be the best decision. It is unlikely that he signs that, but then they get picks (is it two?). If he does sign . . . it's only for one year and you hope and pray that he doesn't turn into a pumpkin as he seems to do every 4 months or so. Anyway, your general assessment of that pitching situation is correct, but I am pretty skeptical about Hermsen making it in the big leagues given how hard he throws. Stuifbergen (forgot him) and Bromberg need to get it together, true, but they could be in the mix at some point in 2013. I would not trade both Span and Hicks. One of them, in my view, has to stay around for a long time. Joe Benson's injury threw a wrench in all of this. As does Tosoni's situation. How is Arcia, defensively, by the way? Is he like Jason Kubel all-around, or just at the plate (please say the latter)? I also think some MR types like Guerra, Oliveros, Watts, Pugh, etc. should be added into the mix. That's the other bit of organizational depth.
  24. Sign one. Trade for one (MLB ready). Diamond Liriano Hendriks Walters DeVries Blackburn Deduno Bromberg Gibson 3 out of 9. Save 3 more for injury and AAA experience. The Twins can trade for non-ready starting pitching as well.
