    Garza just isn't going to happen. Not with this manager and pitching coach. Obviously I would take Garza over this manager and pitching coach, but Terry Ryan wouldn't (and yes I would take Garza over all three). I would still have a problem with Pelfrey. The odds of him being even a replacement level pitcher are not too great. Maybe he over performs for a 1.0 WAR or something. Still not worth the money when the Twins can still try to find younger pitchers with upside for the league minimum and get the same performance.

    Swarzak and Duensing are relievers and only became good as relievers. End of story.

    Why would anyone pay Mike Pelfrey $12 million for 2 years? If that how this team spends money, then it hasn't learned a damn thing from the past or present.

    Fair enough about Steil. I don't like adding Deron Johnson to the list because I don't think he has done a bad job at all. I don't recall who Followell is at the moment and the other two were givens!

    Are you related to one of them or something? I don't even know what "tried, true, and proven" is supposed to mean here. I am not saying that they shouldn't likely have jobs somewhere. I don't think they should be in this organization anymore, and that is for the health of the organization.

    "Positive articles"? "Proven organization"? I am not sure what you are talking about. Anyway, it isn't a lazy approach. Quite the opposite, actually. It is a proactive approach to sweep out those who have caused three terrible seasons in a row, and not a single playoff series won since 2002. I would leave the scouting in place.

    Gardenhire for 2014 is a mistake. For beyond. A greater mistake. He is a mistaken manager--to put it nicely.

    I can see a full 33% of the 40 man roster altering through release, trade, or DFA pretty easily. Much of what needs to happen involves ending the Twins tenure of Dave St. Peter, Terry Ryan, Mike Radcliff, Rob Antony, Brad Steil, Ron Gardenhire, and Rich Anderson. This needs to be said, these people need to be named and called out, and that is that.

    Don't Feed the Greed Guy, Really? The centerpiece of the franchise suffers a conclusion a few weeks ago that is still clouding his experience, the Twins have recent experience with a complete Morneau meltdown, and yet moving him to first base isn't the OBVIOUS choice here? Mauer should be the third catcher. Moving him to first base is not the end of the world and, by the way, none of the other positions even make sense . . . 3B, RF, LF . . . all totally not worth considering. When Kennys Vargas and Dalton Hicks are truly knocking at the door, then considerations can be made. The WAR hit is legit, but it is mitigated by good performers at the catcher position and by replacing other pieces in the roster.

    I am pretty flabbergasted reading these posts. Look, supposedly the rebuilding 2013 could at least have been about figuring out who other than Mauer is a legitimate player for the future Twins when Sano, Buxton, and Rosario (as a second baseman, in particular) are ready to play. You can say that Dozier clearly passed the test and that Arcia is a very likely candidate to pass that test given a season beyond his semi-rookie year. Florimon has passed the defensive test and currently has value there. Now, what's left out of 2013? Hicks was an abomination in April. That word abomination ONLY applies to his performance in April. In my view, there is no way the Twins shouldn't start him on opening day in CF. He can't bat seventh against righties. Plouffe and Parmelee! I'll be a monkey's uncle. What a damn platoon opportunity for two players who actually were on the roster together most of this year and who could share RF together. This need not be a straight platoon, but it still can work very effectively in maximizing PAs for players in positions where they are most able to contribute. And thus I don't understand how it is crazy to consider have a roster for 2014 that maximizes the abilities of the . . . . . roster for 2014. If Parmelee is traded somehow, OK, but that is doubtful. In any event when you have such a platoon you are then able, in game, to bring in the other guy to pinch hit! Am I explaining the obvious? Yes. Is this necessary to explain the obvious? Apparently so.

    By "few" I guess I mean two. John mentioned two, though I hope Doumit is not on the team next year for that. Mastro and Presley would be a clear case next year. If Wilkin Ramirez were healthy in the Clete Thomas epoch this year, that would have been another.

    And . . . . how much time have Plouffe and Parmelee been on the roster this year together? Now just fast-forward to next year and Sano taking over at third. That's not building anything into the roster--it's using what they already have. Obviously Sano takes a roster spot from somebody next year, but the Twins could have Doumit and Willingham to choose from for that.

    It's precisely when you DON'T have regular everyday good players that platooning makes sense. Again, Parm and Plouffe next year eventually.

    Also, I am pretty damn sure that Mauer will be a better defensive first baseman than Colabello, Parmelee, Plouffe, Sano, etc. etc. etc. et al, et al, et al--perhaps the best in the entire organization?

    I am comfortable with a Pinto/Herrmann semi-platoon behind the plate. Semi, because Pinto should be the primary catcher. SSS and everything, I know, but I don't really care. I don't expect Pinto's fall to earth to be that dramatic. And Herrmann will get a bit better after his rookie season. His isolated discipline of about 90 means that if he can hit .240, he is a good backup catcher. I don't expect much of a higher average, but a .240/.330/.370 doesn't seem out of the question. And Pinto's OPS could legitimately be 70-100 points higher than that. Some offensive drop by moving Mauer away from catcher is mitigated by having adequate-good catching options, the arrival of Sano at third, and a jump forward by Arcia (and, ahem, a platoon of Parmelee and Plouffe).

    Perhaps. I think they should just keep it at a +1 for 26 players on the roster.

    But yeah. Even if Mauer is the first baseman. I am fairly comfortable, for now, with the defensive ability of a Parmelee/Plouffe platoon in right. And it makes the two marginal players into one real one. Arcia's position is in doubt there, and lord knows the Twins will probably just hang onto Willingham for dear life. But after Sano arrives, Plouffe's value can still be there in a more limited role, maximizing his ability.

    I am starting to think differently about TR in these statements. He says something completely obvious here--clearly one cannot build a roster around platoons as there are 13 guys, most of the time, to choose from. Ok, Terry. Thanks. Now I wonder if the FA comment in other threads revolves really around an obvious truth as well about filling all holes with FAs is not possible either. Another obvious truth. Maybe there is more innocence going on here. Hopefully.

    Plouffe mashes lefties. Parmelee hits at a major league level against righties. No brainer. A four man bench still allows for a few platoon opportunities after all.

    Duensing actually became a solid reliever again after a slow start. Why try this again and mess with everything and have yet another totally open question mark for another starter? This is just dumb.
