  1. Good grief, I left out one obvious guy. Darnell, Achter, Vargas, Beresford, D. Romero, Rohlfing, Dean, D. Ortiz, Wimmers, Kepler, Polanco.
  2. Well, if I don't get it, someone very soon is going to do so: Achter, Vargas, Beresford, D. Romero, Rohlfing, Dean, Oliveros, D. Ortiz, Wimmers, Kepler, Polanco I have a few more possibilities.
  3. I have 16 guys listed, Seth. Now I just have to figure out what you think about the Kepler and Polanco situation and probably some relievers . . .
  4. That was a very fine post, RB. And the point about Kill is pretty important.
  5. Of course the ACA should have nothing to do with this shutdown. It's only because of one part of one party in one house of Congress that this is even occurring. Yet, it amazes that two things dominate most of the talk about the GS in the mainstream media: 1. That both parties are to blame for this, and 2. That this is actually the time to debate the merits of Obamacare Both of those two things are blatantly false.
  6. I just received an infraction for saying "Also, George W. Bush was not a legitimate authority" in a Twins thread, even though it was both a joke and a rather uncontroversial example of the distinction between "authority vs. legitimate authority" so I am not sure what I can get away with here, but I would actually--perhaps surprisingly--say that I would imagine Christians and all those supposedly with a deep sense of compassion would want rather rampant and deep change with how healthcare is administered in America. It's a joke and a mess and we still cannot provide coverage for every human being. Somehow. I don't view the ACA as a significantly great improvement. Only a single-payer, not-for-profit system is going to be a significantly great improvement. I do know that if I still an adjunct (though I could be thus forced into this decision again next fall), I would have to quit teaching or work for two or more different colleges. At my particular community college, adjuncts teaching 5 classes a semester make about $7,400 after taxes. That's an abomination, but just imagine being limited to only three classes because the college cannot afford benefits?
  7. May's 2013 improvement was adequate. 2014 in AAA will be pretty telling. If he repeats these numbers while advancing, I can see backend upside and that is fine.
  8. The two Presses are not core types, especially Presley. I have to wonder if people don't somehow believe that he is 24 or something???
  9. Yeah, I am advocating for basically trying to find someone who has had struggles who works it out. I know they aren't getting top 10 organizational prospects for these two. The Orioles have some guys in the 11-20 range, though. I am sure that team probably wants pitching, so maybe a bad example. I was thinking 25 year-old types in AA who you "gamble" on or erratic fireballers in low-A who you "gamble" on. Clearing the clog is enough for me to settle for DJ Baxendale or Josh Burris equivalent.
  10. Hey! I generally was pretty positive about players and prospects, and up until just the past month or so, I would have been 51% or more in favor of keeping TR around. To keep the philosophy references going: there was a point near the end of Martin Heidegger's career where he said something like "Only God can save us now." Heidegger was an atheist. This is analogous to the Twins, since only new ownership can save us now (and it ain't gonna happen).
  11. Haha! I would certainly like to hope that any student of mine could be so spot-on in his or her assessment. Those were two good first posts.
  12. At this point, it might be best to just look at the season, the current state of the Twins and just follow the advice of Walter: "[Forget it], dude. Let's go bowling." I mean, what good can come from doing otherwise? There's open hostility around here right now! I don't recommend drinking and smoking a joint while driving, but you get the idea.
  13. Just for reference, sometimes "appeal to authority" as a fallacy is altered to "appeal to illegitimate authority." And I think that is a wise correction. Appealing to an authority is not necessarily bad if the person in question truly has expertise. One big problem is when one conflates a person *in* authority as being an authority. Whether the relevant cast of characters involved for the Twins have that expertise is another issue, though maybe debating that should wait a few weeks around here . . .
  14. I think an argument can be made that 25 or so of the guys on the 40 man truly belong there. Hopefully, Willingham and Doumit can be traded to get some AA pitchers who might be worthy (or need to be) of being on the 40-man. Said pitchers must throw over 90mph on a regular basis though. Speaking of pitchers who CANNOT do that--BJ Hermsen wouldn't be claimed by anybody.
  15. I would think Buxton batting third is the best idea too. There's just too much slugging there, and it would be nice to have that behind Mauer. When the great move is made (say after AS break), Dozier/Hicks, Mauer, Buxton, Sano, Arcia, Rosario, Pinto, Hicks/Dozier, X (however the Dozier-Rosario-Florimon situation works out) is a FUN lineup to watch. We need some fun this year if the team is still looking at 70 wins as a challenge. Also, by that time, it could be Meyer-Gibson-May at the top of the rotation.
  16. It would be cool, at least for dramatic effect, to bring them all up at the same time. Haha. What a big slap in the face to the current roster at the time, but oh well. They are adults.
  17. If the "field manager" isn't really impactful, why don't the Twins save money and sign some cheap dude to run the team? Aaron Gleeman's a cheap dude, right? . . . . . .
  18. What is the definition of a shortcut? I don't even know how to begin to understand that in this context.
  19. This is really good stuff. I instantly click to read your updates first and foremost over everything else at the moment.
  20. We all know, right, that "change" is not going to occur. I mean that is clear. The status quo is acceptable.
  21. 291 losses in three seasons is not enough of an indictment of Gardenhire and Ryan? These are the two to lead the Twins forward? This just seems so bizarre to make this claim.
  22. Hicks wasn't ready, yes. But now? I mean his post-April numbers were not terrible at all. They were what one should expect. It is now to the point where the best teaching moments are going to come for Hicks and Arcia in MLB.
  23. This is exactly right.
  24. Ok, the Roenicke move should give us pause. Not because Roenicke is good and worthy of keeping, but what are the reasons for the decision? It can't be just the walks, right? There are plenty of good reasons.
  25. Exactly. Exactly. In every way!
