  1. This organization is totally insular and there is something just plain wrong with the obsession over promoting from within and retaining guys even though they are now proven failures.
  2. The Twins were the Blue Jays, basically. The loyalists might be signing a different tune if we could merely trade places with those dirty Canucks. The "division title" defense would go away and then . . . what's left again? The player like him?
  3. Absolutely correct. Other organizations clearly don't way playoff games on a par with regular season games. Granted it isn't as clear-cut as in the NBA (in terms of "building for the playoffs"), but there is a difference. And the winning percentage difference between Gardenhire's regular season games and his postseason games is nothing to just brush off as meaningless. Good god and a half! In his defense, though (so people don't accuse me of "childish vitriol"), a team with 5 number 3 pitchers can do pretty well in the regular season. But that isn't going to work well in the playoffs. There looked like there was going to be that one chance with Santana, Liriano, and Radke and then . . . nope. That sort of thing falls on the GM mostly. That said, it isn't clear that Gardenhire and Anderson even *want* the type of pitcher that serves as the 1 or 2 on other teams! Not when you can just push for Nick Blackburn to be signed to some dumb contract and then declare him to be a starter in spring training the next year with no justification.
  4. One has to wonder, do the loyalists around here want anything whatsoever to change in this organization? If such woeful leadership isn't enough to make a change, what on earth is? If this goes another year of 96+ losses? There is a lot of "the manager doesn't do much" comments around here, so one also has to wonder why those people make so much money if they don't really alter win/loss totals in any way. I just don't understand this mentality that we have to stick with the same guys out of "loyalty" and because, well, the roster stinks anyway. We have no way of knowing, of course, what any other manager would have produced in 2013, but I am now completely flabbergasted by the justifications for hanging onto proven failing coaches and the manager.
  5. Bumping this for something not depressing to read. Good tidbits on Berrios and Thorpe.
  6. Exactly. So it clearly IS a deal (maybe not a "big" one), since the manager takes it upon himself to complain about it publicly. How responsible and professional of him, by the way.
  7. Exactly. There is absolutely no accountability here and the defenses here are generally pretty alarming. The players "like Gardy"--well they are on a MLB roster, for one thing. Two, saying bad things about a manager when they DIDN'T KNOW his status would be dumb as hell. Three, who cares? Am I to really believe that a player with a brain like Joe Mauer doesn't have his eye on other managers? I couldn't care less if Clete Thomas, Mike Pelfrey, and Anthony Swarzak love the manager to death.
  8. John, with regard to within the organization, it isn't reducible to being nice, but given the tendency to keep promoting from within and retaining people instead of going outside the organization, there just seems like there is something a bit off with how employees (who fail) are viewed. As far as some comments being made, I think a lot of it has to do with "being nice"--there is no such kind of shrug-it-off-and-keep-the-guy mentality even in Indiana about various sports teams across levels (except for maybe Gene Keady in the last years of his tenure). I have a hard time believing many straight-faced attempts to label Ron Gardenhire a "good manager" these days. This place is full of criticisms of Gardy for in game decisions, each game. The Twins were as good as the Toronto Blue Jays during the successful seasons under Gardenhire--they just happened to play in the worst or second worst division in baseball in each or almost each of those seasons. Without those division titles what would the "good manager" discussion be like?
  9. "All over this organization" and "many of the comments" comes nowhere near "all Minnesotans." Not even remotely close.
  10. They just fired the manager, so I guess we have to wait and see. They have some better pitching in place at the moment.
  11. Everyone (players and coaches) back next year except maybe adding Phil Hughes and cycling through filler players like Roenicke. Good luck with that, Twins.
  12. Dear God there was never a more important day for something else interesting and good . . . .
  13. I see "Minnesota Nice" all over this organization and many of the comments here. People would feel bad about firing somebody (or not re-signing!!!) so they are resistant to hurting feelings. It also means resistance to change and resistance to getting better, in this case. Other places don't put up with this.
  14. The Cubs have bad players too. There, however, it isn't acceptable to manage over such a debacle.
  15. Zero accountability for the leadership. One more guaranteed 90+ loss season.
  16. But I went through that thing and saw 10 gone easily, more to be traded (hopefully).
  17. They can add more people than they really need to protect. Vargas, Kepler, and Polanco are, I imagine, in need of protection, esp. Vargas at this point.
  18. Three 96+ loss seasons in a row weren't enough.
  19. Exact same for me. I mark my 3,000th post with merely a "ditto" here.
  20. How many times will Pelfrey implode in the 5th or 6th inning next year?
  21. Leave it to Mike Pelfrey to make great minds think alike . . .
  22. Haha--Correia, Pelfrey, Diamond, Gibson, Duensing . . . . your 2014 opening rotation. Ahahahahahaha! If 4/5 or 5/5 of this is correct, I am going to go insane next year. I know it.
  23. They just are now getting Nick Blackburn off their hands. Why continue it?
  24. But you KNOW that they don't look at their money as "unlimited" so there is no point to be made there. On no planet is Mike Pelfrey a 3.
  25. Ok, I am not in Minnesota and haven't been for 10 years. Where does this Molitor talk keep coming from???
