  1. I am not clear how anyone could have thought signing Pelfrey last year was some kind of answer to the rotation problem. I was still shocked that the guy was pitching before mid-May, given the injury. Now to sign him again. Good god. If I had to bet, I would say they pursue Hughes on a two-year deal for about $20 million. And then they resign Pelfrey. And that's it. Maybe they don't even get Hughes, and Erik Bedard or someone similar comes to town.
  2. One of the greatest posts ever in TD history.
  3. Three is a possibility, depending on the money Hughes wants. Other than that, forget about no.1. Tanaka will be a Yankee. 2. Pinto and Herrmann can be fine. No need to plug this roster with yet MORE aging, declining "talent." 3. Possible. 4. They won't and they shouldn't. Wait until mid-May if he is doing well in AAA. 5. It is possible, but there also is the talk about stretching him out again . . . Also, Ibarra's status shouldn't matter. Duensing, Thielbar, and Ibarra as the three lefties other than Perkins who are good relievers (sorry, Pedro, you are not, and should be removed from the 40-man, in fact) isn't too many. Ibarra might be plucked if not protected and Duensing should be traded at the deadline if he does well this year.
  4. Of those guys, only Grady Sizemore is within the Twins budget.
  5. That is pretty aggressive on Thorpe! That's an *incredible* signing if he pans out. Have to think E-Town this year for the whole season there.
  6. If trading either of them, I would have to get back someone who is MLB ready or very close. No low-A or high-A return. I do fear that Gardenhire isn't even going to be willing to try moving Dozier back to short if Rosario forces the issue by the all-star break. I also fear that, furthermore, Willingham and Doumit are still going to be lumbering around the OF some and the temporary solution of moving Rosario to LF will be out the window too.
  7. And fourth, again, that $10.5 million or whatever would look better when given to a FA starting pitcher. It's conceivable that a straight up swapping out of Willingham and Doumit for one of those FA starters would balance the wins and losses. Plus getting playing time for actual future Twins and getting a couple minor league pitchers back . . .
  8. No. First I realize it's a gamble to hope for two starters down the road. Second, it isn't clear to me that Willingham and Doumit and their 1,000 plate appearances is really going to be an improvement over those 1,000 plate appearances going to whatever combination of Arcia, Parmelee, Pinto, and Herrmann. It certainly isn't a matter of more than a couple wins. It could very well be the opposite. Third, I don't see how giving 1,000 plate appearances to those two does any good for the future of the Twins beyond 2014.
  9. I understand that, I just don't like the risk. Relievers and utility players are the ones seemingly most in danger. I would rather risk Darnell and Dean.
  10. ". . . there was the error . . . and the error was the Twins and was with the Twins."
  11. I was just thinking about your comments about him, and that was after his start before this last one. Well-played.
  12. I still think the very viable target lies between the Butera and Morneau trades. One reason I say that is because I think the Twins were actually looking for someone like Presley--someone MLB-ready to play every day in the OF. This focused the search in the Pirates system instead of targeting younger pitching.
  13. Sorry, I was just making the point that there is value in players who may only top out at bottom 3/5 of the rotation in general. That is, it is conceivable that the same problem presents itself to the Twins in 2015 without Correia and maybe Meyer, Gibson, and May as 1-2-3. And yes there is a fairly loaded bottom third of the system in terms of starting pitching.
  14. "Preposterous statement," huh?
  15. There are other ways to acquire pitching. And if the Twins were to trade either one, then more AAAA roster pollution would occur!
  16. I just don't think those are the only players worth trading for. The Twins don't have more than one current clear-cut 3-5 person in their rotation for 2014.
  17. A charitable reading of YHIMH's post seems required. What is clearly meant is a 14-man pitching staff. It's blatantly clear that this is what is meant.
  18. Zero reason to trade either one of them now. Maybe near zero reason to trade either at any point in the near future.
  19. I would certainly protect him, in case there is some team who wants a utility infielder for 2014. Pedro Florimon and Eduardo Escobar are not true locks to maintain legit MLB status. When looking at the rule 5, I think one has to place top prospects and/or guys one could see joining the team in the next season. The latter might very well apply to Beresford.
  20. There is something very similar for lefty relievers too. Here's to hoping Fien, Burton, and Duensing are good this year and can be dealt at the deadline.
  21. Is there a general attitude that Arcia, Pinto, Hicks, and Herrmann all should start the year in AAA? I would disagree vehemently. If 2014 isn't about the youth movement, I don't know what to say about this organization.
  22. They aren't the same age though, not even close. Willingham is clearly starting to decline and there is the potential still for Parmelee to become adequate. Shedding Willingham and Doumit has effects on Parmelee, Arcia, Pinto, and Herrmann (AKA players who could actually be around after 2014). It also sheds $10 million to spend elsewhere (could easily amount to 2 wins by itself!). And then the actual traded-for players are gambles, but it is something for the future, unlike keeping aging veterans who are only valuable at the DH on a REBUILDING team.
  23. My bad about sorta not understanding you. I read it as top 150 prospects who are pitchers. You then indicate that you mean strictly pitchers, but then say "overall top 150" so I still don't know what you mean, but even then it doesn't matter. Such prospect lists are pretty volatile. Players on the Twins top 50 list from last year have jumped up pretty far in one year. I don't know why anyone could see an actual detriment in getting two roughly 20-25 Twins org prospects in exchange for 10 million dollars of potential mediocrity from players who are likely to not be good at all after 2014. But those two players might serve actual contending teams well. I don't want to reduce what I am saying to this, but maybe it needs to be said: there is a lot of room between a "bag of baseballs" and "top prospects."
  24. Aaron Hicks and Oswaldo Arcia? Not in your plans at all?
  25. 2013 BR WAR: Josh Willingham 0.3, Chris Parmelee 0.5.
